The Green-Faced Child watched as the man approached, a sinister smile creeping across his face.
A sense of foreboding settled in my heart; it felt like something was amiss, but I dared not act impulsively and decided to observe for now.
“Daddy, Mommy said she misses you so much.” For some reason, the Green-Faced Child's figure transformed into that of a normal child.
When I saw the Green-Faced Child change, I was momentarily stunned; it turned out to be a cute child after all.
The man seemed to snap back to reality, his eyes softening as he reached out and placed his hand on the Green-Faced Child's face. A wave of paternal love washed over him as he said, “Daddy misses you too. I've always blamed myself for your and your mother's deaths. I'm so sorry.”
After saying this, the man broke down in tears, looking utterly heartbroken.
Beside me, the woman was infuriated by this scene and made to stand up. I felt helpless; how could she not see what was happening? It was quite pitiful, really.
I grabbed her arm and scolded her, “Do you want your child to lose their mother too?”
The woman seemed to understand something from my words, tears streaming down her face in a mix of confusion and sorrow. I didn’t know what else to say.
“Daddy, will you come down and be with Mommy and me? Mommy is having such a hard time; she gets punished by Yin Chai every day. They say Mommy is the mistress, a bad person. Can you go tell them that Mommy isn’t the mistress? That woman is the Bad Person Who Destroys Your Relationship,” the Green-Faced Child exclaimed passionately, pointing at the woman beside me. My heart jolted, and I immediately pulled the woman behind me.
The man followed the direction of the Green-Faced Child's finger. When his gaze landed on the woman's face, I understood his decision in that moment; it was a look filled with guilt.
He walked toward the woman but was stopped by the Green-Faced Child. The man smiled gently at the child and said, “Daddy won’t leave you again. Just give Daddy a little time to explain things, okay? After all, Daddy has let her down too.”
The Green-Faced Child seemed to think for a moment before nodding and stepping aside, though its eyes remained cold.
The man approached the woman. Before he could speak, she burst out in tears, unable to contain herself. “Can you really bear to leave us?”
The man smiled bitterly. "Actually, there has never been love between us, has there? You’ve always known that. You only desire my appearance, and I only crave everything from your family. I’m sorry for her, and I’m sorry for the children behind me, and for the child lying in the coffin. I am a sinner. Our children are still young; you can find a man better than me to be their father, but they are different."
As he spoke, the man glanced back at the Green-Faced Child, his paternal love intensifying in his eyes. A few seconds later, he turned back to the woman and continued, "They have nothing left. If they lose me too, it would truly be pitiful."
After he finished speaking, the woman slapped him.
He accepted it; after all, it was what he deserved, and there was nothing more to say.
"Dad, we should go," the Green-Faced Child approached, casting a glance at the man before glaring at the woman.
"Alright, Dad needs to go apologize to your mother," he said before following the Green-Faced Child out without looking back.
This farce seemed to have come to an end.
The woman cried out loud. Watching her in pain stirred complex feelings within me. I didn’t know how to comfort her. At that moment, Xiaomei emerged from the child’s body and urged me to leave; there was no point in staying here.
I glanced at the woman before stepping out of her house. On the way, I asked Xiaomei where the man had gone.
Xiaomei smiled mysteriously and said I would know tomorrow.
Upon returning home, I checked on Captain Wu. He was just as he had been before. I sighed and decided to rest.
The next day around noon, my phone rang urgently in my hand. To my surprise, there were over a dozen missed calls. My heart jolted as I realized something and immediately called back; it was Director Huang’s number.
On the call, Director Huang’s tone had become very polite, asking me to come over.
I understood then that the woman’s matter had been resolved and that Director Huang was quite satisfied. So I didn’t rush; instead, I leisurely got up to wash up. It was an hour later when I finally appeared at the woman’s house.
When I arrived, I found Director Huang sitting in the living room with a strange man, but there was no sign of a woman.
I was taken aback for a moment. Upon seeing me, Director Huang stood up and politely shook my hand, expressing his gratitude for my help in resolving their family issues.
I smiled politely, but my eyes were searching for the woman. Noticing my gaze, Director Huang proactively said that she was upstairs and would be down shortly.
I nodded; after all, I needed to confirm that she was safe.
After a while, the woman came downstairs, looking very happy as she approached me and handed me a red envelope. I felt it; it was quite thick and must have contained a good amount of money. I intended to return it to her, but she insisted that I keep it, saying that it was thanks to me that her child's life could be saved.
I decided not to be polite and accepted it. At that moment, the man standing next to Director Huang suddenly turned to the woman and then looked at me with an emotion in his eyes that I couldn't decipher. He said, "You must be Wang Niu. I'm the general manager of Cheng Group. Thanks to you, I can be with Xi Er. Our big day is coming up soon; you must come! And once you graduate, you can choose any position in my group."
I was momentarily stunned and didn't fully grasp what he was saying; it took me a moment to realize that the woman had found another man.
But none of this mattered to me; it was her choice of life.
I nodded in response. After having a meal at the woman's house, I left with Director Huang.
On the way, Director Huang had already begun to trust me greatly and entrusted me with matters concerning Big Boss.
When we arrived at our destination, I realized it was Big Boss's home.
"Director Huang, are we going in now? But I didn't bring my things," I said.
Director Huang smiled and replied, "Little brother, isn't this simple? Just tell me what you need, and I'll have someone get it for you right away."
I sighed; there was no other option. Once inside Big Boss's house, the smell became even stronger. I couldn't help but gag slightly, while Director Huang looked at me in confusion and asked what was wrong.
I couldn't explain; after all, people like Director Huang couldn't smell it. I simply said it was nothing.
After a moment, I followed Director Huang into Big Boss's room, only to find two unfamiliar figures: an elderly woman and a younger woman.
"Who are these two?" Director Huang asked the butler standing nearby.
The butler replied that they were experts they had invited, capable of saving Big Boss's life. A few days ago, Big Boss had nearly died, and it was thanks to these two that he was still alive.
As the butler spoke, I discreetly observed the two individuals beside me. They were peculiar, exuding an indescribable aura that made them seem almost inhuman. Their appearances were strikingly beautiful, yet there was an odd scent about them, as if the essence of the house emanated from their very beings.
Wait a minute, a thought suddenly struck me, leaving me quite astonished.
Could they be manifestations of the Rabbit Demon?
I steadied my racing heart as I continued to scrutinize the two before me. Meanwhile, Director Huang introduced me to the butler, stating that I was quite formidable and could also save Big Boss.
The butler had seen me before, yet he still harbored some doubts about my abilities. However, he didn’t voice them openly; after all, he had to maintain his respect for Director Huang.
At that moment, I noticed that the two women were also sizing me up. Not only that, but I could sense a strange energy emanating from them, slowly encroaching upon me. I saw their expressions darken as they glared at me with resentment. This only solidified my belief that these two were definitely not human.
