As the resentment on the Ghost Bride began to dissipate little by little, I heard movement behind me, resembling the footsteps of a woman.
My heart jolted. Could it be that the female ghost from the haunted alley had come?
I quickly nudged Captain Wu, urging him to hide better.
This small room was so cramped that it could be seen in one glance, with no place to conceal ourselves except for a curtain hanging on the left side.
We had no choice but to hide behind the curtain. Just as we settled in, a shadow appeared in front of the Ghost Bride.
"Ha ha, so it's a Ghost Bride," the female ghost laughed, her gaze fixated on the Ghost Bride with an eerie intensity.
The resentment that had been fading from the Ghost Bride's form halted as she froze, fear flickering across her face. "Y-You... who are you?"
Upon hearing this, the female ghost burst into laughter, her eyes filled with disdain. She reached out and grasped the Ghost Bride's neck. "Have those humans reduced your resentment? You're such a spineless ghost. It's just a man—what's so important about him? Being a ghost is far better; you can do whatever you want."
Her words sent a chill down my spine. Did the female ghost know we were here?
At that moment, she released the Ghost Bride and turned toward Captain Wu and me, her eyes gleaming with malice. Not only that, but her lips curled into a cold smile.
This made me even more anxious; it seemed she had truly discovered our presence.
I whispered to Captain Wu, "Be careful; the female ghost has noticed us."
Captain Wu paused for a moment before quickly drawing his gun, preparing to defend against the ghost. Just as she was about to approach us, I yanked down the curtain and wrapped it around her, pulling Captain Wu and the bewildered Ghost Bride out of the room.
Before we could take more than a few steps, the female ghost somehow freed herself from the curtain's grip and stood before us.
With an expressionless face, she glared at Captain Wu and me. "Do you really think you can get rid of me like this? You men are all worthless; you deserve to die."
The ferocity on her face made my heart tremble. I recalled what the old woman had told us earlier—would this ghost unleash her wrath on Captain Wu and me for what those men had done?
Suddenly, a mass of black mist surrounded the female ghost, transforming into sharp blades that lunged toward us in an instant.
I shouted for caution and pulled Captain Wu aside, thinking those sharp blades would pierce through us. To my surprise, an unexpected scene unfolded.
The Ghost Bride, standing behind us, suddenly stepped in front of Captain Wu and me. The sharp blades struck her body, and within just a few seconds, they transformed into black mist and vanished.
For the Ghost Bride, it was utterly ineffective.
The female ghost immediately became furious and lunged at the Ghost Bride, engaging in a fierce struggle that resembled a catfight between two women.
Captain Wu and I watched in astonishment, but I quickly regained my senses. We needed to escape while we had the chance.
I nudged Captain Wu and gave him a knowing glance. He understood immediately and quietly followed me as we slipped away.
Perhaps the female ghost was too focused on her fight with the Ghost Bride to notice us. Just as we were about to exit the alley, I suddenly felt a chilling breeze behind me.
Instantly, my scalp tingled. Could it be that the female ghost was coming after us again?
I instinctively glanced back and, to my shock, saw that it was indeed the female ghost approaching. Not only that, but she was holding a chain, dragging the Ghost Bride along with her.
"Get out of here! You’re not going to save this Ghost Bride, are you?" The female ghost stopped in her tracks, glaring at us as she kicked the Ghost Bride.
Captain Wu and I exchanged glances, our hearts filled with conflict.
If we saved the Ghost Bride, we might not even make it out of here. But if we didn’t help her, it would seem ungrateful. As we pondered this dilemma, the female ghost delivered another harsh kick to the Ghost Bride and said, "See? These men won’t save you. You risked everything to help them just now."
The Ghost Bride looked at us with disappointment in her eyes, and the resentment that had been fading began to resurface.
This was bad; my heart raced with alarm. If the Ghost Bride regained her resentment, both Captain Wu and I would be doomed.
I immediately called out to the Ghost Bride, "We’re not abandoning you! We’re trying to find a way! Don’t you trust your groom? Before he came here, he told us that no matter what happens, he will wait for you. You will always be his bride. Don’t you want to come with us to see him?"
After I finished speaking, the resentment surrounding the Ghost Bride began to dissipate little by little. I let out a sigh of relief; it seemed that my words had calmed her down.
Captain Wu, standing beside me, understood my intention. He echoed my earlier statement, saying, "Yes, if you become a vengeful spirit filled with resentment, you won't be able to return to life and be with your groom."
Captain Wu's words instantly stirred excitement in both the Ghost Bride and the female ghost.
"What did you say?" the Ghost Bride and the female ghost exclaimed in unison.
Even I was taken aback by Captain Wu's statement. Returning to life was no simple matter, so how could he make it sound so easy?
Captain Wu seemed unfazed by my astonished expression. He continued earnestly addressing the female ghost and the Ghost Bride, "I know about both of your situations. If you can let go of your resentment, I have a way to help you return to life. I'm not lying."
"Is what you're saying true?" The female ghost threw away the chain she was holding and quickly moved in front of us.
My heart raced even faster; after all, being so close to the female ghost was risky. If I accidentally angered her, we would be in serious trouble.
However, Captain Wu appeared unafraid of the female ghost, his expression calm. This made me look at him with newfound respect.
"Do you know why you can't leave this alley?" Captain Wu asked.
The female ghost paused for a moment, her expression turning agitated as she replied, "How do you know I can't leave this alley?"
I looked at Captain Wu in confusion. I had thought that the heavy resentment in this place was what kept the female ghost trapped here, but it turned out that she couldn't leave the alley itself.
"It's because the resentment here is too deep, and your own resentment is also very strong. The two are mutually attracting each other, which is why you can't escape. It's as if you're surrounded by this resentment, creating a wall at the exit," Captain Wu explained.
Upon hearing Captain Wu's words, the female ghost paused for a moment and began to contemplate. Taking advantage of this time, I quietly asked Captain Wu what he was doing.
Captain Wu subtly gave me a look, and I nodded in understanding. The female ghost soon snapped back to reality and glared at us, saying, "If you dare to deceive me, I'll make sure you die here."
Captain Wu shook his head, a look of helplessness crossing his face as he said, "You might be overthinking this. What benefit do we gain from deceiving you?"
Upon hearing Captain Wu's words, the female ghost relaxed her wary expression and asked how she could leave this place.
Captain Wu walked over to the female ghost, turning around her a few times before saying, "It's quite simple. You need to rid yourself of the resentment you carry."
The female ghost immediately replied, "That's impossible. What they did to me, I can't just erase it, even if they are all dead now."
Her words left both me and Captain Wu feeling troubled. What more could she want when those people were already dead?
Captain Wu patiently persuaded her, "So you want to stay here forever? If that's the case, you'll always be a ghost. I know you don't want to accept that fate. As long as you can eliminate your resentment, you'll have the chance to come back and become human again."
"Human..." The female ghost's eyes lit up at this word, clearly intrigued by what Captain Wu had said.
Captain Wu nodded and asked, "So, what do you think? Are you willing to follow our advice?"
After hesitating for a few seconds, the female ghost finally nodded and said, "I agree with what you said, but I have one condition."
I was taken aback for a moment, my heart starting to race with unease. What did the female ghost have in mind?
"You can speak," I urged.
