Before midnight, everything was as usual, but after eleven, the Ghost Bride floated out from the indicator light, her gaze scanning the surroundings as she began to seek her prey.
Captain Wu glanced over and said, "Little brother, should we intervene this time? We can't just let her kill another man."
I thought for a moment and decided to let Captain Wu observe the situation first.
Just then, a car approached from across the street. Captain Wu and I immediately straightened up, focusing all our attention on the Ghost Bride.
She noticed the car and a faint smile appeared on her lips as she drifted toward it, preparing to present herself before the driver and scare him to death.
"Should we make a move?" Captain Wu reacted instantly, standing up.
I nodded, about to speak when suddenly I felt an uncomfortable aura enveloping the area.
My heart skipped a beat as I looked toward the source of the aura, where I saw a thick cloud of black mist emerging from the left side.
Could something else be coming?
I grabbed Captain Wu's arm, signaling him not to act recklessly.
He crouched down, quietly watching the Ghost Bride's movements. At that moment, she had already terrified the driver, who was now wildly crashing around at the intersection.
I shifted my gaze back to the black mist, which slowly began to dissipate, revealing a figure within.
A strange feeling surged within me as I realized what was happening. At that moment, the driver collided with an indicator light; one of its railings fell rapidly and impaled him. He died on the spot.
"Another one dead," Captain Wu said, his voice filled with guilt.
The Ghost Bride moved towards the car as before, and I knew she was starting to absorb the souls of men again.
At that moment, I heard footsteps nearby. Following the sound, I looked over and saw that the black mist on the left had vanished. In its place stood a figure.
I couldn't make out the person's appearance; he was wrapped up tightly, but I could tell he was a man.
The man walked over to the Ghost Bride, his cold gaze fixed on her, as if he intended to kill her.
I frowned, suddenly feeling something was off. Could this person actually see the Ghost Bride?
Captain Wu had not noticed anything unusual; all his attention was focused on the Ghost Bride.
I nudged Captain Wu and quietly informed him. He glanced over and froze for a moment, then asked me softly who that was.
I shook my head, saying I didn't know, but this person was certainly not ordinary; he could see the Ghost Bride's presence.
The man approached the side of the car. For some reason, the Ghost Bride seemed unaware that someone had come close, completely absorbed in draining the soul from the driver.
In that instant, the man opened the car door and reached in, gripping the Ghost Bride's neck tightly and yanking her out of the car.
In an instant, both Captain Wu and I heard the Ghost Bride's piercing scream.
"Who is that man? How dare he confront a ghost directly?" Captain Wu asked in surprise.
I remained silent, a heavy feeling settling in my chest. If he was our enemy, we were in serious trouble.
After pulling the Ghost Bride to the ground, the man threw back his cloak. At that moment, Captain Wu and I could clearly see that it was He Wei.
"Little brother, what does He Wei really want?" Captain Wu asked.
At that moment, a heavy stone seemed to press down on my heart. "I don't know, but it can't be anything good. It might be related to our situation."
"Should we save the Ghost Bride?" Captain Wu suggested.
This thought left me deeply conflicted. How could we possibly save a ghost? Besides, the Ghost Bride wasn't one of us. If she turned out to be an enemy, we would only be making things worse for ourselves.
We didn't take action; instead, we watched as He Wei took the Ghost Bride away.
After doing all this, He Wei cautiously looked around, as if worried someone might see him. Then he stuffed the Ghost Bride into a bag and got into his car, preparing to leave.
Seeing this, I immediately urged Captain Wu to drive and follow He Wei.
He Wei's abduction of the Ghost Bride surely wasn't for the safety of those drivers; it had to be for some hidden agenda.
"Little brother, what's wrong?" Captain Wu asked as he drove.
My gaze remained fixed on the car that He Wei was in. "I'm afraid He Wei took the Ghost Bride because of Liu Shoubai."
Captain Wu paused for a moment, his face filled with surprise. "But Liu Shoubai's body has been destroyed, and his soul is gone. How could he possibly bring Liu Shoubai back to life?"
I shook my head and told Captain Wu that this was certain. The Ghost Gate Cult had existed for a long time, and no one truly understood it deeply. Therefore, we couldn't let our guard down; He Wei might have other methods.
Captain Wu nodded, agreeing that my words made sense. Our car continued to follow He Wei's vehicle.
Before long, I realized that the route He Wei was taking seemed familiar, but I couldn't recall where it led. I asked Captain Wu about it. He glanced around and said, "Little brother, do you think He Wei is heading to that haunted alley in the market?"
Captain Wu's words reminded me, and I quickly recalled the route to the market.
I felt a surge of excitement and told Captain Wu that this was indeed the way.
Sure enough, He Wei's car drove into the market. To avoid being noticed, Captain Wu and I got out at the entrance and jogged after him.
To our surprise, just as we had guessed, He Wei walked into a sinister alley.
Captain Wu and I immediately stopped in our tracks. This alley had an ominous reputation, and without knowing whether there was any real danger inside, we couldn't act recklessly.
Reluctantly, we left the market and returned to our place. The living room light was still on. Captain Wu and I exchanged glances—who could still be awake at this hour? To our surprise, it was Uncle Tiger.
I was a bit taken aback and asked Uncle Tiger why he wasn't asleep. Was he feeling unwell?
Uncle Tiger shook his head, gestured for us to sit down, and asked where we had been—had we gone to that intersection?
Captain Wu and I didn't hold back; we shared everything about our encounter with He Wei.
Instantly, Uncle Tiger's expression turned grave. He said to us, "This is serious; something terrible is about to happen."
His serious demeanor sent a chill down our spines, and we hurriedly asked him what was wrong.
Uncle Tiger furrowed his brow, his face still heavy with concern. "I'm afraid He Wei plans to use the Ghost Bride against us."
"What do you mean he's going to use her against us?" I asked in shock.
Uncle Tiger nodded and explained, "That alley is known as a haunted place. The aura inside is very conducive for He Wei to recuperate and refine demons. And now that he has captured the Ghost Bride, it further indicates that He Wei intends to use her to eliminate us."
"Uncle, what should we do?" Captain Wu asked anxiously, after all, they were dealing with a ghost, not a human.
"You need to go in and find the Ghost Bride. You must help her release her grievances; once her resentment dissipates, the spirits of the drivers who were captured will naturally fade away. This will also accumulate some good karma for you. Once you resolve the issue with the Ghost Bride, come out immediately without delay, because there is another female ghost inside that you cannot deal with, understand?" Uncle Tiger instructed.
Captain Wu grew worried. "Uncle, sending me and my little brother in there is like walking into a dead end."
Uncle Tiger turned his Eyeball around as if pondering something. He then stood up and walked into the room, retrieving several bamboo-woven Dolls and handing them to us. "These are called Bamboo Yang Yin Objects. You take these inside; they will block the female ghost's gaze, so you won't be harmed."
I looked at the Bamboo Yang Yin Object in my hand and asked Uncle Tiger, "What if we encounter He Wei while we're inside?"
Uncle Tiger reassured us not to worry; it would be safe to enter during the day.
Captain Wu and I nodded in agreement, and then we each returned to our rooms to rest.
The next morning, Captain Wu and I skipped breakfast and headed straight to the police station. After Captain Wu took care of some routine matters, we went together to the haunted alley in the market.
Standing at the entrance, we felt a sense of trepidation; after all, the resentment here was incredibly deep. Not only had seventy-seven bodies died here, but many others had perished as well.
After a moment, I took a deep breath. At this point, I was mentally prepared. I turned my gaze to Captain Wu and asked if he was ready.
