A strange, elongated, pitch-black creature suddenly appeared from all directions, surrounding me in a tight circle.
I took a deep breath, trying to comprehend what these things were. Their heads resembled wolves, but they were not wolves; their bodies were round yet lacked legs.
As I stared at them, their gazes converged on me, revealing eerie expressions. A series of drumming sounds pressed down from above, and instantly, my head felt overwhelmingly heavy, as if something was compressing it. Then I noticed those creatures around me; their eyes glowed with an eerie green light, and black smoke emanated from their bodies.
Suddenly, they all began to howl at the sky, and the black mist swirling around them gathered into a dark cloud above.
What was even more terrifying was yet to come.
I instinctively glanced at the dark cloud hovering over me. To my shock, a line of light shot out from it and pierced into my forehead. In that moment, I felt engulfed by a wave of pain that overwhelmed my entire being.
I couldn't help but cry out; it hurt so much that soon my forehead and even the back of my head were drenched in sweat, as if something was escaping from me. I vaguely saw what seemed to be a white shadow.
What was that?
Then more things began to drift out of me, and I felt myself growing weaker by the second.
In the final moments, I seemed to hear Uncle Tiger and Captain Wu's voices rushing toward me before I fell into a silent world.
It felt like an alternate existence devoid of color or sound. I floated in this space, feeling an overwhelming sense of oppression, as if I were on the brink of suicide.
At that moment, a voice drifted into my ears—ethereal and haunting. "Come now, this world welcomes you; you can stay here forever," it whispered with a sinister chuckle.
As soon as the voice faded, a powerful wind enveloped me entirely and pulled me deeper into the void. Just as I was about to enter the black hole, a surge of strength erupted from within me, breaking free and suppressing the wind that had trapped me.
I was momentarily stunned; before I could grasp what was happening, the black hole before me transformed into an intense beam of light. In an instant, I was drawn into this radiant mass. When I opened my eyes again, three days had passed.
"Little brother, you finally woke up!" Captain Wu exclaimed excitedly.
I blinked in confusion, my mind still foggy as I stared blankly at Captain Wu, seemingly unable to return from that other world.
Captain Wu looked taken aback and gently patted my face. "Are you alright?"
After a moment, I realized I was in a hospital room. It dawned on me that I had returned from that world.
I felt a surge of excitement and attempted to sit up but quickly discovered that I couldn't move; it felt as though my body wasn't mine anymore.
I anxiously asked Captain Wu what was wrong with me.
Captain Wu looked hesitant as he replied, "Little brother, you’ve lost a part of your soul, which is why you’re in a state similar to a vegetative one. But don’t worry, Uncle Tiger is already looking for your soul."
His words left me puzzled about what had actually happened. Seeing my confusion, Captain Wu explained, "You might not know yet."
I shook my head, and he continued, "That night at the Funeral Home, after I left, something happened to you. The person who appeared at the door was He Wei. He used a trick to distract me and managed to take you to the abandoned stadium. By the time I realized what was happening and returned to the cremation room, you were already gone. I immediately checked the surveillance footage and found you being drained of your soul by He Wei. Luckily, we arrived just in time; Uncle Tiger stopped He Wei, and that’s how you were saved."
After hearing this, my heart felt heavy. I hadn’t been careful enough, and not only had I gotten hurt, but I had also caused trouble for Uncle Tiger.
Moreover, I had been unconscious for three days. I wondered if A Yao was worried about me. I asked Captain Wu if A Yao knew about my situation.
Captain Wu shook his head and said he hadn’t told A Yao.
I looked gratefully at Captain Wu and then asked when Uncle Tiger would return.
Captain Wu replied that it should be soon.
At that moment, a doctor entered to check on me, and Captain Wu stepped out.
Days passed again, but Uncle Tiger still hadn’t returned. This made me anxious; what if something had happened to him?
I called for Captain Wu and asked where Uncle Tiger had gone. I urged him to send someone to look for him. To my surprise, Captain Wu said he didn’t know. I became frustrated and questioned how he could say that when he was the last person to see Uncle Tiger.
Captain Wu looked innocent as he shrugged and said, "Little brother, you can’t blame me for this. I've sent people to look for Uncle Tiger these past few days, but he’s not at the abandoned stadium anymore. I checked the surrounding cameras too; it seems like Uncle Tiger went up into the mountains."
The mountains.
My mind raced through every suspicious location. Could it be that Uncle Tiger had discovered He Wei's whereabouts?
I asked Captain Wu if we should go into the mountains to search for Uncle Tiger's trail. However, Captain Wu explained that the mountain Uncle Tiger entered was quite special—it was known as a dangerous mountain. He elaborated that it was shrouded in fog year-round and very confusing inside; even those who lived deep in the mountains faced significant risks when entering.
After all, they had to consider these factors when responding to emergencies; they couldn’t just send officers into danger without reason. Otherwise, it wouldn’t reflect well on them either. While I understood Captain Wu’s concerns, we couldn’t just stand by while Uncle Tiger faced danger in that mountain.
Captain Wu seemed conflicted and helpless. He sighed and said that if there was still no news from Uncle Tiger by tonight or tomorrow, he would apply to send people into the mountains.
I nodded in agreement, and Captain Wu left to return to the police station to handle matters.
Because my soul had been extracted, my body's energy was depleting rapidly. Before long, I felt an overwhelming fatigue wash over me, a strong urge to sleep creeping in as my eyelids grew heavier. Just then, the sound of a cat reached my ears, and I felt a heaviness in my stomach. I forced my eyes open and saw Black Cat standing before me. My heart leaped with joy; perhaps Black Cat could have Xiaomei within her help me find Uncle Tiger. After all, Xiaomei was a capable spirit.
Just as I was about to speak, Black Cat suddenly exhaled a puff of black mist. In an instant, I felt a burning sensation coursing through my body, making me extremely uncomfortable. Black Cat's voice came through at that moment: "Wang Niu, bear with it. I'm merging our souls so you can save your Uncle Tiger."
I froze at her words. Could something have happened to Uncle Tiger?
After a while, my body gradually returned to its normal state, and I could move again. This made me very happy, and I immediately stood up from the bed. Just then, Xiaomei's voice suddenly echoed from within me, startling me.
"Wang Niu, I need to tell you something. Right now, I've entered your body. Only by doing this can you temporarily regain your original form and use this body to save Uncle Tiger. Once you rescue him, I'll leave your body. How does that sound?"
I nodded; there was no other choice.
Then I left the hospital and took a taxi, giving the driver the location Xiaomei had mentioned. Half an hour later, we arrived at the destination.
Before heading into the mountains, Xiaomei warned me about some things. She had been inside this mountain before and sensed something unknown lurking within—something very sinister that nearly trapped her forever.
I acknowledged her warning and cautiously stepped into the vast mountain range. My heart raced with anxiety; even though Xiaomei was with me now, her earlier words heightened my awareness of the dangers that lay ahead.
As I ventured deeper, I remained unaware that my surroundings were slowly changing. When I turned around, I found myself enveloped in thick White Mist.
I pondered when this White Mist had appeared; it hadn't been there just moments ago. Had danger emerged? I asked Xiaomei what was happening.
