"Captain Wu, tell me, the body of Qiman was found near our rented place."
In an instant, my mind went blank. I hesitated for a moment before quickly pulling out my phone to call A Yao. Seeing my anxious expression, Captain Wu asked what was wrong.
I explained that A Yao might be in danger and immediately dialed her number. The phone rang for a long time, but A Yao didn’t pick up, which made me even more anxious. I rushed out of the police station, and before I could reach the door, Captain Wu caught up with me and asked if I was going to find A Yao. I nodded and got into Captain Wu's car; it would be better to have someone with me in case something happened.
In my urgency, I urged Captain Wu to drive faster. Unexpectedly, we encountered a car accident on the way; it seemed a wedding car had collided with another vehicle.
Due to Captain Wu's profession, he had to get out and handle the situation. I had no choice but to call for another ride. Before leaving, I glanced at the scene and noticed a bride lying on the ground, covered in blood.
When I returned to our rented place, my heart raced even more because the front door was wide open. I called out several times but received no response; A Yao was not inside.
Could it be that Qiman came looking for A Yao last night?
Panic surged within me as I wondered what Qiman wanted.
Just then, I heard A Yao's voice outside along with Officer Yuan's. I dashed out and felt an immense relief when I saw A Yao was safe and sound. I hugged her tightly, terrified that she might disappear from my sight.
A Yao seemed startled by my sudden action and stood frozen in place. Once I released her, she asked what was wrong.
I looked at A Yao and Officer Yuan; they appeared unharmed, which eased my tension. But I hesitated about whether or not to tell them.
Seeing my conflicted expression, A Yao grew anxious and said, "Wang Niu, if something's wrong, just say it. Don't keep it to yourself."
Officer Yuan encouraged me to speak up so we could tackle whatever it was together.
After thinking for a moment, I led A Yao and Officer Yuan inside and had them sit down. I warned them that no matter what they heard next, they shouldn’t be surprised or scared. Upon hearing this, their faces turned even more tense.
I told A Yao and the others about the disappearance of Qiman's body.
After hearing this, they fell silent, seemingly frightened. A few seconds later, Officer Yuan was the first to speak up, saying, "Could it be that someone brought Qiman's body here?"
I shook my head. It would be difficult for an ordinary person to enter the police station, let alone know where the body was stored. Moreover, the surveillance footage showed no abnormalities. It could only be said that the body came here on its own, and there was another possibility: Qiman might not have been human.
A Yao knew about Qiman's death, but Officer Yuan was less informed. Upon hearing my words, she looked at me in shock and asked if I was mistaken. A corpse had already died; how could it possibly walk here on its own? And how could there be ghosts?
The atmosphere had already been tense, and Officer Yuan's words made it even more eerie. A Yao and I exchanged glances, swallowing hard. The events we had experienced over the past few days had surpassed common understanding; it was impossible to approach them with normal reasoning.
A Yao's face turned pale immediately. She stood up, nervously grasping my hand and said, "Wang Niu, do you think Qiman might be coming to seek revenge on us? If so, what should we do?"
Looking at A Yao's pale face, I couldn't care less about anyone else nearby. I pulled her into my arms and kissed her forehead, comforting her not to be afraid; I would protect her.
Officer Yuan stood up as well, her expression becoming serious. "Wang brother, if what you say is true, then we can't stay here."
I released A Yao and nodded at Officer Yuan. "Yes, we can only temporarily stay in the dormitory of the police station. I'll discuss it with Captain Wu later."
After saying that, I instructed A Yao and the others to pack their things and called Captain Wu. He agreed and said he would come to pick us up after handling this matter.
After a while, our things were packed, but Captain Wu still hadn't arrived. We had no choice but to wait for him.
To ease A Yao's anxiety, I started telling them jokes. I thought we would be waiting for Captain Wu for a while longer, but unexpectedly, Black Cat—the one who had gone missing last night—showed up.
I was somewhat surprised by Black Cat's appearance. As I stepped out, A Yao and the others followed me.
Black Cat's gaze was fixed on A Yao behind me; he called out to me a few times. I understood and gestured for A Yao and the others to go inside first.
A Yao glanced at me strangely but said nothing as she walked inside with Officer Yuan, waiting for me. After they entered, I turned to Black Cat and asked where it had been last night.
Black Cat shivered slightly, and a swirl of black mist emerged, transforming into Mei'er. She approached me and said, "Wang Niu, you all need to continue staying here. This place is safe; nowhere else can protect you from that female corpse."
As Xiaomei's words sank in, I was taken aback. Did Xiaomei know about Qiman?
Seeing my stunned expression, Xiaomei continued, "Wang Niu, do you remember what I told you before? There are lingering spirits attached to you."
I nodded, and Xiaomei went on, "At first, I thought there was only one spirit around you, but it turns out there are two. You should know who they are by now."
Her words shocked me deeply. After a moment, I managed to respond. Xiaomei pointed at the house in front of us and said, "This house is a bit special; it seems something is buried beneath it. With my current abilities, I can't tell what it is yet. However, for you all, it's a great protective barrier. Otherwise, how could that corpse have been discovered nearby? Last night, after I dealt with those spirits, my energy couldn't hold up anymore and I entered Black Cat's body. I don't even know how I made it back here. But when I arrived, I felt a powerful force—something very strange. Soon after, I sensed my energy returning. At that moment, I noticed a stream of Yin Qi approaching this house. Initially, I thought it was the spirit that had been following you. But when I returned home, I realized it was a corpse."
I paused for a few seconds and asked, "Are you saying that Qiman's corpse was circling around the house last night?"
Xiaomei confirmed with a nod and continued, "Yes. Whenever that corpse tried to get close to the house, it was repelled by a force within it. This happened several times. That’s why I believe there is a hidden power beneath this house that the corpse fears."
Xiaomei's words dispelled my earlier thoughts. I nodded again and asked her if she knew why Qiman was looking for us.
Xiaomei furrowed her brow and looked at me more seriously as she said, "It might be because of your girlfriend."
I was taken aback and didn't understand her implication. A Yao was just an ordinary girl; why would Qiman be interested in her? I asked Xiaomei if it was because of me.
Xiaomei shook her head and explained that A Yao's unique constitution made her suitable for Qiman's rebirth.
Rebirth?
I felt even more confused. Was Qiman trying to use A Yao's body to come back to life? If that were the case, why would Qiman still choose to commit suicide? This was truly puzzling.
Xiaomei stopped speaking and transformed back into a wisp of black smoke that entered Black Cat's body. Shortly after, Black Cat seemed to be in a bad state.
I carried Black Cat into the house, and as soon as A Yao saw me enter, she immediately stood up. Upon noticing Black Cat in my arms, she instinctively took a few steps back and said, "Wang Niu, are you really going to keep this Black Cat with you?"
I glanced at Black Cat and suddenly had an idea. I looked at A Yao seriously and said, "No, it's not me who will keep it; it's you."
As soon as I said this, both A Yao and Black Cat turned to look at me, seemingly surprised by my words.
I ignored them and set Black Cat down beside me. I looked at the luggage that A Yao and Officer Yuan had packed and sighed. Now they would have to repack everything.
Seeing that I wasn't speaking, A Yao became anxious, clearly unwilling to carry Black Cat with her. She asked me what I meant by my earlier statement.
Just as I was about to respond, the sound of a car came from outside. I turned my head to see Captain Wu returning.
After parking the car, Captain Wu rushed inside. He glanced at A Yao and Officer Yuan before pulling me out the door to ask what was going on.
I initially wanted to explain, but then I remembered that everything was fine now, so I shook my head and said that the issue had been resolved and there was no need to change dorms. Captain Wu looked taken aback and said, "Aren't you just messing with me?"
Feeling a bit embarrassed, I scratched my head and recalled today's events. I asked Captain Wu how things were handled.
Captain Wu sighed and said it was difficult to manage; the situation had escalated significantly. It was quite troublesome because the bride's body had been placed in the middle of the road by her family, who refused to move it, effectively paralyzing that stretch of road.
