Captain Wu looked around at the Yokai, his face still filled with trepidation. Although there was a Yin Limit in place, any unexpected incident could spell disaster for both of us.
Thus, Captain Wu and I proceeded with extreme caution, taking each step carefully. The Black Cat in my arms looked down on us disdainfully, claiming that our hesitance would eventually lead to trouble.
After what felt like an eternity, we finally reached the center, only to find ourselves drenched in cold sweat.
The Black Cat insisted that I put it down. I nodded and released it, and it immediately darted onto a nearby stone. My gaze followed the Black Cat, and that was when I realized that the center was completely empty except for a large rock. Wait, wasn't it said that there was a Ghost King nearby?
At that moment, Captain Wu nudged me and said with a pale face, "Little brother, look over there! What is that? It looks terrifying."
I turned to see what Captain Wu was pointing at and was shocked to find a corpse. Its face was covered in small black insects, giving it a gruesome appearance. Moreover, I noticed that the clothing of this corpse was unlike that of other spirits; it resembled the attire of ancient nobles.
Instantly, my mind went blank. Could this corpse be the Ghost King that the Black Cat had mentioned?
I broke out in a cold sweat. Even though the Ghost King was supposedly restrained by the Yin Limit, its deep-set eyes sent chills down my spine.
Taking a deep breath, I was suddenly jolted back to reality by the sharp cry of the Black Cat. I turned to see it acting excitedly, using its paws to toss a large stone repeatedly. I paused for a moment—was there something beneath the stone?
I quickly called out to Captain Wu and we approached the stone together. Suddenly, I noticed movement marks on the ground. A surge of excitement rushed through me as I shared my discovery with Captain Wu. He eagerly examined the surroundings and exclaimed, "Little brother, look! This can be moved! If we push this stone forward with all our strength, we might uncover a hidden entrance!"
Captain Wu's words astonished me. At that moment, the Black Cat let out another meow as if agreeing with him. Without hesitation, I joined Captain Wu in pushing against the stone. As we did so, I felt the ground tremble beneath us; soon enough, light began to emerge from below our feet. It seemed there really was an entrance! Before long, half of an opening appeared before us, filling me with excitement—perhaps Liu Shoubai's body lay beneath.
As we pushed aside the stone, a large entrance was revealed before us.
Instinctively, I glanced into the opening and saw that it was spacious inside, with a long path stretching deep into darkness.
"Little brother, let's go down."
I nodded in agreement. Just as I was about to follow Captain Wu down, I suddenly heard some movement behind us, like footsteps. I paused, wondering if it was the ghosts that were nearby.
To my surprise, when I turned around, I saw the haunted spirits and the Ghost King suddenly springing into action. Several pairs of eyes were fixed on me and Captain Wu. Instantly, I felt a shiver run through me, my mind going blank. At that moment, Black Cat's body erupted in a cloud of black mist and transformed into Xiaomei.
Captain Wu was taken aback; he clearly hadn't expected that Black Cat was hiding a person—no, more accurately, a spirit.
Once Xiaomei appeared, she glared at us and shouted, "Aren't you going to hurry inside? Do you want to be eaten?"
Naturally, we didn't want that. I quickly grabbed Captain Wu and rushed into the cave. With Xiaomei dealing with those ghosts, we would be fine.
Once inside the cave, we kept running, afraid that the ghosts would catch up to us.
After a while, both Captain Wu and I were exhausted and had to stop to catch our breath.
I glanced back and was relieved to see that the ghosts hadn't followed us. It seemed Xiaomei really knew what she was doing.
Captain Wu walked over to me and shot me an annoyed look. He accused me of deceiving him; that Black Cat was no Cat Fairy but clearly a fox spirit in disguise. He asked how I got involved with a fox spirit in the first place.
I chuckled awkwardly, unsure of how to respond to Captain Wu. Seeing my reaction, he decided not to press further and suggested we quickly find Liu Shoubai's body and leave this place.
I let out a silent sigh of relief that Captain Wu didn't continue questioning me; otherwise, I really wouldn't know how to answer him.
I nodded and followed Captain Wu to the stone door. On either side of the door stood two lion statues—one with a green face and the other with a yellow face—looking quite eerie.
Captain Wu suddenly stood between the two stone lions, adopting a thoughtful expression as he said, "Little brother, don't you think these two lions look a bit strange?"
I nodded, feeling an unsettling aura emanating from the lions. Just then, Captain Wu reached out to touch the head of the Azure-Faced Lion, and a thunderous sound echoed above us. Not only that, but some dirt began to fall from overhead.
This immediately put me on high alert. Could it be that this cave was about to collapse?
I quickly urged Captain Wu to withdraw his hand, but at that moment, I saw the tightly shut stone door suddenly swing open. I was genuinely astonished; could it be that these two lions were the key to opening the door?
I hurried over to the other Stone Lion and placed my hand on its head. To my surprise, it produced a similar rumbling sound, and more dirt fell from above. The stone door opened wider, enough for two people to enter.
"Little brother, look! Who would have thought that the key to opening the stone door was actually these two Stone Lions at the entrance?" Captain Wu exclaimed.
I nodded in agreement and entered alongside Captain Wu.
Inside seemed different from outside; it had a village-like feel, yet it wasn't quite that. There were many houses connected by naturally formed openings, each marked with a serial number.
This was indeed puzzling. Even stranger were the red lanterns hanging in front of these houses. The Red Lights were interconnected, creating an odd ambiance reminiscent of a funeral display.
In the center of these houses lay a stone coffin.
Captain Wu and I focused our gaze on the coffin; perhaps this contained Liu Shoubai's remains.
We were both excited, and Captain Wu rushed over. I quickly stopped him; it looked too simple, and there might be hidden dangers.
I advised Captain Wu not to act recklessly; it could lead to trouble.
Captain Wu chuckled, asking if I had noticed something inside.
I shook my head; there was nothing unusual here, but it gave me a sense of unease. To be safe, I picked up a stone and threw it toward the center, curious to see what would happen. To my surprise, the moment the stone was thrown, it was suddenly shattered into powder by the black mist reflected from the two rows of houses, floating in the air before disappearing without a trace.
This startled both me and Captain Wu. We hadn't expected such an outcome. If I hadn't pulled Captain Wu back just now, he might have turned to dust as well.
Captain Wu patted his chest, still shaken, and said it was a close call.
I furrowed my brow; reaching the stone coffin seemed to be a daunting task.
After thinking for a moment, I picked up another stone, intending to throw it into the center again while focusing intently on the two sides of the houses. Perhaps I could discern something.
The moment I threw the stone, I felt tense, my gaze fixed on the houses. Suddenly, I noticed a detail: when the black mist spewed out from both sides of the houses, the flames in the red lanterns hanging above would double in size, even exceeding the lanterns themselves and revealing fierce flames. Could it be that extinguishing the lanterns would eliminate the danger?
Excited by this thought, I shared it with Captain Wu.
After hearing this, Captain Wu looked worried and said that if that wasn't the case, we might face even more serious problems and potentially encounter other hidden dangers.
His words felt like a bucket of cold water poured over me; he had a point. Were we really going to remain stuck like this?
After some time and careful consideration between Captain Wu and me, we decided to give it a try. We then agreed that each of us would take responsibility for one side's lantern.
