Upon arriving at the Cemetery, we immediately made our way to Liu Shoubai's gravestone.
To our shock, both Captain Wu and I stood frozen as we discovered that Liu Shoubai's gravestone had been dug up, and the body inside was missing.
"What is going on?" Captain Wu and I exclaimed in unison.
I crouched down to examine the area and noticed that the soil around it looked freshly disturbed, as if it had just been excavated.
Instinctively, I glanced around and saw that everything else in the vicinity appeared intact; no other tombs had been disturbed. This led me to connect it with the recent death of a family member. Could it really be true, as Captain Wu suggested?
Was He Wei behind this?
As I pondered this, Captain Wu called out to me, pointing at some marks on the ground. "Hey, look at this! There are traces of mud all over."
Following his gaze, I indeed saw a trail of muddy footprints leading away. Without hesitation, Captain Wu and I followed the prints, which seemed to ascend toward the mountain above the Cemetery. When I looked up, I confirmed that there was indeed a mountain looming over us.
Could it be that He Wei was the one who took Liu Shoubai's body?
With this troubling thought in mind, we reached the entrance of the path leading up the mountain. Peering inside, we were met with thick fog; venturing further could pose dangers, especially with nightfall approaching.
After some deliberation, Captain Wu and I decided it was best to leave for now and regroup later when we had a clearer plan.
Upon returning to our lodging, just as we reached the door, a delicious aroma wafted through the air, causing my stomach to growl uncontrollably.
"Wow! Could it be that Miss A-Yao has cooked something tasty?" Captain Wu exclaimed as he hurried inside.
I walked in and saw the table filled with a variety of dishes. I paused for a moment, wondering what day it was.
I sat down with Captain Wu, just as A Yao and Officer Yuan emerged from the kitchen, both carrying plates of food they had prepared.
Captain Wu and I exchanged glances and asked them what was going on today.
A Yao and Officer Yuan smiled at our question, saying that it was nothing special; they just noticed we had been working hard lately, so they made a feast for us.
After dinner, everyone was in high spirits and gathered in the living room to chat about various topics. My gaze lingered on A Yao's face; I realized she still looked as beautiful as when I first met her, the kind of beauty you could never tire of.
At that moment, a cat's meow echoed from outside, causing everyone to fall silent.
The meowing continued, reminding me of the Black Cat that had appeared twice before.
I immediately stepped outside, and seeing this, Captain Wu and the others followed me. To my surprise, it was indeed the same Black Cat from before, its eyes fixed intently on me.
For some reason, an unusual feeling stirred within me. A Yao came up beside me and nudged me gently, seemingly afraid of the Black Cat. She urged me to be cautious and not get too close.
However, the Black Cat didn’t seem to harbor any ill intentions towards me.
At that moment, the Black Cat let out a few soft calls towards me, took a few steps forward, then turned back to look at me as if inviting me to follow it.
I hesitated for a moment but quickly regained my composure. Just as I was about to take a few steps forward, Captain Wu grabbed my arm and shook his head. It was clear that both A Yao and Captain Wu were worried about what the Black Cat might do to me.
I reassured them that I would be fine and decided to follow the Black Cat. For some reason, my instincts told me that this Black Cat might have something important to reveal.
Black Cat led me to a small grove. I glanced around at the surroundings; it was pitch black, and every now and then, strange sounds echoed through the air, making me feel uneasy. Suddenly, Black Cat let out a terrible scream and began to tremble violently.
I jumped in shock. What was happening? Just a moment ago, everything seemed fine.
Black Cat collapsed to the ground, its body convulsing. Then, I saw dark smoke rising from its form. I instinctively took a few steps back, thinking something was wrong, only to find Xiaomei standing there.
I was taken aback. Xiaomei approached me, smiled, and said, "Wang Niu, are you so foolish that you don't recognize me so quickly?"
I snapped back to reality and replied, "Of course I recognize you. But how did you end up here?"
Xiaomei chuckled and twirled around a few times as if she had discovered some treasure, her eyes sparkling with excitement. This struck me as odd and somewhat unsettling; what was Xiaomei up to?
"Wang Niu, you need to remember this: you owe me a favor. You let me off the hook before, and I've repaid you in these two matters. Don't forget my kindness in the future," Xiaomei said.
I paused for a moment, trying to recall what she meant by "two matters." Was she referring to Qiman and He Wei? I looked at Xiaomei, trying to find an answer in her eyes. She nodded, confirming my suspicion. Xiaomei continued, "Wang Niu, if you want to break the curse of the Thai script and resolve the current situation, you must keep me close because the challenges ahead are immense. Without me, you won't be able to succeed. Also, there's something following you—if I'm not mistaken, it's a ghost."
Xiaomei's expression was serious; she wasn't joking at all.
I was genuinely shocked. How could there be a ghost near me? I asked Xiaomei if she was sure.
Xiaomei confidently replied that there indeed was a ghost with me and asked if I had harmed a woman.
This left me even more confused. How could I have harmed a woman? But then it hit me—what if Xiaomei was referring to Feng Jie?
Seeing the change in my expression, Xiaomei's smile grew brighter as she said, "I wasn't wrong, was I? From your reaction, I can tell you're in trouble with that woman."
Xiaomei's words surprised me once again. Previously, Feng Jie had indeed posed a danger to both A Yao and me, but during that incident in the dormitory, it was Feng Jie who helped me. I couldn't understand why Xiaomei would say such a thing.
I glanced at Xiaomei and was about to ask her some questions when, to my surprise, she seemed to know what I was going to say next and directly interrupted me. "Wang Niu, I can't tell you more than this. After all, I am a spirit and she is a ghost; we belong to two different worlds. If we break the rules, it won't be good. Just remember what I said. Also, take this Black Cat with you. I will inhabit it. Tomorrow morning, after you go to the mountain near the Cemetery, you must not tell anyone about our previous matters. This is also part of our agreement."
After saying this, Xiaomei made a move as if she were going to dive into the Black Cat. I quickly called out to her, asking if she had any ulterior motives for helping me. She smiled lightly and said it was a secret. Then, fearing I would ask her anything else, she transformed into a wisp of black smoke and entered the body of the Black Cat.
I felt helpless and began to worry again. I had thought that my interactions with Xiaomei were over, yet here I was encountering her again in these two matters.
For a moment, it felt like a heavy stone was pressing down on my chest. It seemed that something mysterious was happening; otherwise, why would the paper effigy Boss, Feng Jie, and Xiaomei say such strange things to me?
After thinking for a while and fearing that A Yao and Captain Wu would worry about me, I picked up the Black Cat and returned to where I was staying.
At that moment, the Black Cat became lively again. I placed it on the sofa beside me and ignored it for now. However, Captain Wu and A Yao exploded with excitement, quickly pulling me aside to ask how I had brought this Black Cat back.
I wanted to tell Captain Wu and A Yao everything but remembered my agreement with the Black Cat. Instead, I changed my words and said, "Don't you think this Black Cat brings us good luck?"
Captain Wu and A Yao looked at me blankly, showing no reaction to my words. This left me feeling somewhat helpless. I pulled Captain Wu aside again and whispered, "Captain Wu, this Black Cat is key to finding He Wei. It's not an ordinary Black Cat; it's a sentient one."
Seeing my mysterious expression, Captain Wu asked skeptically if that was true.
I nodded and added for emphasis that it was a Cat Fairy.
Captain Wu's eyes widened in disbelief as he sought confirmation from me. When I nodded again affirmatively, he immediately changed his attitude and turned around to pick up the Black Cat. I felt exasperated by the whole situation.
