I exchanged glances with Captain Wu, and we took out the tape, placing it into the player. At first, the screen displayed nothing but static. After waiting for a while, it remained the same, leading both of us to suspect it might be a prank.
Just as we were about to eject the tape, suddenly, an image appeared on the screen, and Captain Wu and I immediately focused on it.
The scene showed the building where Old Man Huang lived, followed by a car pulling up and a person stepping out.
Captain Wu and I leaned in closer, anxious that the person getting out of the car might disappear from the screen.
"Hey, look! Isn't that He Wei?" Captain Wu exclaimed excitedly.
I looked closely and indeed saw He Wei, holding a Wooden Box as he walked into Old Man Huang's building.
I thought the footage would remain fixed on that building, but to my surprise, it continued to follow He Wei's movements.
This astonished me. I turned to Captain Wu and asked, "Have you ever seen any cameras inside that building?"
Captain Wu paused for a moment, recalling his memories. After a while, he shook his head and said, "No. But how did this tape come to be? Who sent it to you?"
I shook my head in response, admitting I had no idea where the tape originated. We continued watching the screen.
After entering, He Wei seemed very familiar with the building. Instead of going directly to Old Man Huang's apartment, he walked to the spot where the body had been buried. He placed the Wooden Box down and took out some ritual items, arranging them in front of the box. I noticed He Wei's lips moving; he was likely reciting some incantations. This scene lasted for several minutes.
Captain Wu, puzzled by He Wei's stillness facing the wall, turned to me and asked what He Wei was doing.
I intended to respond to Captain Wu, but just then, I witnessed an astonishing scene. The previously still image suddenly filled with black smoke.
The black smoke emerged from the wooden box, gradually taking on a human form.
I widened my eyes in shock, for the figure was Liu Shoubai. Instinctively, I called out his name. Captain Wu, standing beside me, paused and asked what I was saying.
Excitedly, I pointed at the screen and explained to Captain Wu that Liu Shoubai had appeared.
Since Captain Wu couldn't see, he still wore a puzzled expression. I told him to wait a moment and that I would explain later. Then, I continued watching.
After emerging from the box, Liu Shoubai stood directly in the center of the wall, right among the corpses. Suddenly, he leaned back as if performing some kind of ritual. A few seconds later, an even more astonishing scene unfolded.
Several dark shadows appeared on the white wall, and in just a moment, these shadows were absorbed into Liu Shoubai's body.
After absorbing the shadows, Liu Shoubai's dark markings intensified, as if he were converting these shadows into his own energy.
Once finished, Liu Shoubai retreated back into the Wooden Box.
At that moment, He Wei also closed his mouth and knelt a few times before the Wooden Box. Then he picked it up and walked to Old Man Huang's house.
A few seconds later, Old Man Huang appeared on the screen. Upon seeing He Wei, his expression was very relaxed, as if he were greeting an old friend.
The two entered the room. He Wei placed the Wooden Box down and began chatting with Old Man Huang. Initially, their conversation was quite cheerful, but then something changed. Old Man Huang seemed very angry and abruptly pushed He Wei out. However, He Wei appeared to possess great strength; he pushed open the door with such force that it resulted in Old Man Huang's death as he left with the Wooden Box.
I thought the scene would end there, but it did not.
In the minute after Old Man Huang's death, mice and snakes suddenly swarmed the entire room, creating a chilling atmosphere. What was even more terrifying was that these creatures seemed almost supernatural, using ropes to hoist Old Man Huang into the air.
In the next moment, something strange happened to Old Man Huang's eyes; they appeared to be pierced by wooden nails, shattering his gaze.
I was immediately startled by this scene and took a deep breath. At that moment, Captain Wu and I had thought that the old man had been murdered, but it turned out to be a backlash.
At this point, the image faded away.
Captain Wu was clearly taken aback by what he had just seen; perhaps he had never encountered such a bizarre death before. After a while, he stroked his chin thoughtfully and said to me, "Little brother, it seems that the person who sent you this videotape might know something. Now that Old Man Huang is dead, only He Wei remains."
I nodded, reflecting on everything that had happened over the past few days. Suddenly, I felt that this might not have anything to do with the Thai curse.
Just then, my phone rang—it was A Yao calling.
I answered the call, and A Yao's voice sounded extremely anxious, as if something terrible had happened. I asked her what was wrong, but she was crying so hard that she couldn't explain clearly.
This made me very worried. I immediately told Captain Wu that A Yao might be in trouble and that I needed to go back. Upon hearing this, Captain Wu insisted on coming with me, saying he might be able to help.
I nodded; after all, there’s strength in numbers.
When Captain Wu and I arrived at the school, we saw a crowd of students gathered together, seemingly discussing something.
As we approached, we noticed that there were already police officers among them.
To my shock, I realized someone had jumped from a building to commit suicide, and A Yao was standing among them, looking terrified as she spoke with one of the officers.
I was momentarily stunned, trying to grasp what was happening.
Captain Wu also realized something was amiss. He walked in and asked his colleagues what had occurred here.
As I listened, I learned that when A Yao had just arrived at this spot, someone had jumped down from above. Coincidentally, A Yao was the first eyewitness, and having never encountered such a scene before, she was understandably terrified and crying.
I approached her and wrapped my arms around her, gently reassuring her that everything would be alright.
Yet A Yao still looked frightened, which tugged at my heart. Just then, Captain Wu's voice cut through the tension.
"Little brother, the person who jumped is Qiman."
I froze at his words, and A Yao in my arms flinched in shock. We both turned to look at Captain Wu just in time to see the body on the ground being turned over; it was indeed Qiman.
In that moment, an indescribable feeling washed over me. How could Qiman be dead?
A Yao burst into tears, asking me how Qiman could have jumped. I shook my head; this was a significant shock for me as well.
After all, that night I had seen Qiman devouring a living person. How could he suddenly be dead? Captain Wu and I shared the same astonishment and gravity of the situation.
I kept staring at Qiman's lifeless body. For some reason, I had a nagging feeling that things might not be as straightforward as they seemed. How could Qiman have died so suddenly?
Once the court officials finished their investigation of the scene, Captain Wu instructed his colleagues to wrap things up and took us back to the police station. After all, some matters couldn't be discussed in front of so many people.
Back at the station, I poured a glass of water for A Yao, trying to comfort her emotions.
After a while, Captain Wu finally began to ask A Yao if there had been any abnormalities with Qiman recently.
A Yao was taken aback by Captain Wu's question and shook her head, saying that everything with Qiman seemed normal and she hadn't noticed anything unusual.
Captain Wu nodded, seemingly lost in thought. Not wanting to disturb him, I turned my gaze toward A Yao.
Seeing A Yao's pale face made my heart ache. I took her small hand in mine, hoping to give her a bit of strength.
At that moment, Captain Wu snapped back to reality and gave me a subtle look, which I understood immediately.
I suggested that A Yao go back to rest with Yuan Yuan and that I would come to pick her up later. However, A Yao seemed reluctant, gripping my hand tightly as if she were worried. I couldn't bear to push her away, so I decided to wait until she fell asleep before discussing Qiman's death with Captain Wu.
After a long time, A Yao finally fell into a deep sleep under my soothing words.
I let out a sigh of relief and walked over to Captain Wu.
Captain Wu smiled and joked that this was the sweet burden of caring for someone.
I shrugged and began to discuss the matter at hand. I shared my thoughts with him, and Captain Wu nodded in agreement, expressing that he also found Qiman's death suspicious. He asked if I wanted to go take another look at Qiman's body.
