I heard a man's scream, sharp and chilling, echoing from the left. It sent a shiver down my spine.
Driven by curiosity, I walked toward the sound. The path was dark, but I could still make out the way ahead. As I reached the left side, I hoped to see what lay around me.
But there seemed to be no one here; it was eerily empty. How had that man's voice come to be?
I stepped further in, my heart racing for reasons I couldn't understand. Then I noticed something on the ground—a small trail of blood. It wasn't much, but it led along the path. Had the man been dragged away?
I quickened my pace, following the bloodstains. Just as I approached an intersection, I suddenly heard a strange sound, like someone eating something.
I froze and moved cautiously, trying to pinpoint the source of the noise, which seemed to be coming from around the corner.
Peeking out, I was met with a horrifying sight.
A bloody corpse lay at the intersection, and beside it knelt a woman with her back to me. She appeared to be picking something up and eating it. My heart raced in terror.
Was she killing and devouring human flesh?
In an instant, my stomach churned violently, threatening to expel its contents, but I managed to hold it back.
What I thought was terrifying turned out to be just the beginning. After finishing whatever she had in her mouth, the woman suddenly extended her hand. Her fingers, once devoid of nails, elongated into sharp claws in an instant as she plunged them into the man's chest and pulled out his heart.
I widened my eyes in shock as she devoured it.
Taking a deep breath, I felt a wave of dread wash over me as she began consuming the man's head and body parts, even his toes—all within ten minutes.
It was horrifying.
I became even more hesitant to move, fearing that I might step on something and alert the woman.
The woman stood up, satisfied, turned towards me, and pulled out a tissue to wipe her mouth, revealing a strange smile.
However, I was completely frozen in place because this woman was none other than Qiman.
At that moment, I heard a noise behind me that startled me. Instinctively, I turned around to find a Black Cat staring back at me, its green eyes sending chills down my spine.
What I didn’t realize was that this Black Cat had caught Qiman's attention, and she began walking towards me.
With each step, my breathing grew more rapid.
Regardless of whether it was Qiman or not, just witnessing her cruel actions filled me with dread; it was terrifying.
I instinctively took a few steps back. Just as her footsteps grew closer, the Black Cat behind me suddenly let out a fierce yowl, its expression turning aggressive. I felt a jolt; it seemed as if the Black Cat was glaring at me. Was I about to become its target?
My heart sank, and my scalp tingled with anxiety.
What should I do?
My mind began to spiral into chaos when suddenly, the Black Cat leaped forward towards me. In that instant, I realized what was happening and then heard Qiman's scream. The Black Cat had pounced onto Qiman's face and was scratching at her with its claws.
I couldn't help but breathe a sigh of relief. I needed to leave immediately; if Qiman discovered me, who knows what danger awaited. I quickly made my way out of there. Once outside, I hailed a cab and instructed the driver to get to the police station as fast as possible.
Noticing my distressed state, the driver asked with concern what had happened and if there was an emergency. Naturally, I couldn’t tell him the truth; that would only cause panic. So, I simply nodded and gasped for breath.
Seeing my terrified expression, the driver didn’t press further and drove swiftly to the police station.
After I handed the fare to the driver, I rushed into the police station to discuss the matter with Captain Wu.
Upon hearing my words, Captain Wu was momentarily stunned, clearly shocked by what I had said. He urged me to lead the way, and soon called a group of officers to accompany us. If word got out that someone had actually consumed a living person, it would surely cause widespread panic.
When we arrived at the location, everyone quickly exited their vehicles and headed to the spot where I had been earlier.
Qiman was nowhere to be found, but before us lay a skeleton, still stained with fresh red blood. This must be the remains of the man.
"Captain Wu, have the forensic expert take a look and confirm if this is human remains," I suggested.
Captain Wu nodded gravely, his expression serious as he clearly hadn’t anticipated that someone could turn a living person into this within less than half an hour.
The forensic expert began examining the bones while Captain Wu and I waited nearby. The outcome was already evident; we just needed confirmation.
After about half an hour, the forensic expert's face turned grim. It was indeed human remains, and they were freshly dead. His words left everyone present in shock.
This was their first encounter with such a case. What kind of person could transform a living being into this state in such a short time? The bones were remarkably clean, and everyone exchanged glances, fear creeping onto their faces.
Even Captain Wu seemed at a loss for words. At that moment, I noticed a camera above us. This could be helpful. I nudged Captain Wu and pointed to the camera overhead. He understood immediately and instructed someone to find out who owned it.
Before long, they identified the owner. We then obtained footage from the past hour and returned to the police station. Captain Wu and I hurried into the office to review the recording.
My emotions tightened as we began watching.
The footage quickly revealed Qiman entering the alley with the man. They turned left at the corner where I had just stood, and soon became intimate. The scene was quite explicit, leaving both Captain Wu and me feeling awkward; I hadn’t expected Qiman to be such a duplicitous woman.
After a while, the intimate scene faded away, replaced by Qiman’s face contorting into a fierce expression as she drained the man's essence from his body. Of course, this part couldn’t be shown on screen, but I could see it clearly.
Captain Wu, looking puzzled, pointed at the screen and said to me, "Little brother, what are they doing? Why are their mouths so close together? It doesn't seem like they're kissing, and the man's expression looks quite painful. Also, look at that—his feet are lifted off the ground."
I became serious and explained to Captain Wu that they weren't kissing; they were absorbing Yang Qi.
Captain Wu paused for a moment after hearing my words, seemingly not quite understanding what I meant. After a brief silence, he asked uncertainly, "Little brother, you didn't misspeak just now, did you? How can one absorb Popularity? Is that even possible?"
I nodded. Captain Wu still looked a bit surprised. After a moment, he said, "It seems this Qiman is quite dangerous. We need to take action."
I thought for a moment and shook my head at Captain Wu. "No, we can't act yet. If we cover up the situation, it might alert the dog and cause trouble. Besides, we don't know Qiman's background yet. What if she turns out to be something evil? We absolutely cannot proceed without complete preparation. For now, we can only keep someone watching her. And the person we send shouldn't be an ordinary police officer; it must be someone from the special forces or similar."
Captain Wu nodded in agreement with my reasoning. At that moment, I remembered A Yao and wondered if she had returned home. I took out my phone to call her when Captain Wu noticed and asked if I was calling A Yao.
I confirmed that I was. Captain Wu smiled and said that A Yao was with Officer Yuan Yuan and not to worry.
Upon hearing Captain Wu refer to the female officer so casually, I teased him about whether things were progressing quickly between him and Officer Yuan.
To my surprise, Captain Wu chuckled sheepishly and nodded, saying it could be considered that way.
I looked at Captain Wu in astonishment; I hadn't expected him to be so charming and to close the distance so quickly.
Then I remembered something else and asked Captain Wu about the coffin matter. It seemed like a long time had passed since then, and I wondered if he had found out anything new.
Captain Wu shook his head, looking somewhat helpless at first. However, a few seconds later, his expression changed from helplessness to excitement as he exclaimed, "I just thought of something! I almost forgot!"
