On the wall in front of me hung a corpse.
Not only that, but his hands and feet were nailed down with thick wooden spikes, much like Jesus.
Moreover, his eyes had been gouged out, and his mouth was stretched wide open, giving the impression that he had died from fright before being pinned up like this.
I asked Captain Wu if this man was Old Man Huang.
Captain Wu quickly took out his phone to confirm with the director. Before long, he received a photo of Old Man Huang. We immediately compared the photo, and indeed it was Old Man Huang.
Who killed Old Man Huang?
This question left both Captain Wu and me puzzled. Could it be that Old Man Huang was merely an accomplice, while the real murderer lurked in the shadows?
In an instant, the case plunged into confusion.
After a moment, Captain Wu seemed to have thought of something. He turned to me and said, "Little brother, don’t you find it strange about Old Man Huang? Also, the presence of so many dead mice and snakes here is quite odd."
I pondered for a moment and nodded. I had heard my grandfather say that those who associate with mice and snakes are not ordinary people; they are often sinister beings. Could it be...?
Captain Wu noticed the change in my expression and asked if I had come to any conclusions.
I nodded again and suggested that Old Man Huang might have been practicing some form of Evil Arts; otherwise, how could there be so many mice around?
Captain Wu suddenly became interested and asked what practitioners of Evil Arts would do with these mice.
I shared what I knew with Captain Wu, mentioning things like drinking their blood or eating their flesh, among other things.
Upon hearing this, Captain Wu was taken aback, as the lead regarding Old Man Huang had come to a dead end. We had no choice but to search for new clues, but unexpectedly, we had gained another lead.
This trip had not been in vain after all.
After work, Captain Wu treated me to dinner, saying it was a reward for my efforts.
However, I had little appetite; my mind was consumed by the matter of Old Man Huang's death. Just then, a commotion arose around us.
I snapped back to reality and saw a disheveled woman suddenly appear before us, looking like a madwoman. She was filthy, her hair was unkempt, and there was an unpleasant odor emanating from her.
I frowned as she suddenly pulled out a knife and lunged at me. I was startled, but fortunately, Captain Wu reacted quickly and subdued the woman. However, at that moment, she broke free from his grasp and dashed toward the window.
For some reason, an ominous feeling crept into my heart.
When the woman began to gather her tangled hair, I realized with shock that this was Feng Jie's mother.
In just a few days, how could Feng Jie’s mother have changed so drastically? Before I could fully process my astonishment, Feng Jie’s mother revealed a strange smile. Her eyes held a chilling malice as she looked at me and said, "Heh heh, I want you to taste the curse."
After saying that, Feng Jie’s mother jumped down. There were many onlookers who were all startled by her actions, gasping in shock. Someone shouted that someone had died. It took me a moment to react; by the time Captain Wu and I rushed downstairs, Feng Jie’s mother was already dead.
The area was stained with her blood, and what was even more horrific was that her brain matter had splattered everywhere.
Captain Wu was equally stunned by the sudden turn of events. He quickly took out his phone and called for colleagues to come over.
I remained lost in thought about Feng Jie’s mother’s last words. Why did she mention a curse? How had she ended up like this?
So many things happened in one day. Suddenly, I felt a heavy sensation in my chest as if I couldn't catch my breath.
I had no choice but to sit on the floor and catch my breath. After finishing his tasks, Captain Wu noticed me, sat down, and asked if I was okay.
I shook my head and said I was fine.
Seeing this, Captain Wu suggested that he take me home so I could rest for a few days. He mentioned that my current state was not good and advised me not to dwell on Feng Jie’s mother’s death.
Although I agreed, I still found it hard to forget what Feng Jie’s mother had said.
After dropping me off, Captain Wu left. After all, today had been quite busy for him.
Once back in my dormitory, I couldn’t help but think of the deceased Chen Ming, which only deepened my sense of oppression. Taking a deep breath, I stepped out of the dormitory. It then occurred to me that it was probably time for dinner, so I called A Yao. She told me she was still in the study room working on her assignments, so I headed over there.
The study room was nearly empty and very quiet. As soon as I entered, I spotted A Yao sitting in the corner.
Her serious demeanor while studying captivated me for a moment. I walked over to her and whispered, “A Yao, it’s time for us to eat.”
A Yao looked up at me with a sweet smile and said okay before starting to pack her books. Just then, a girl walked past me. Initially, I didn’t pay much attention to her, but suddenly a strange smell wafted into my nose. I froze for a moment; why did it smell like a dead rat? Instinctively, I glanced over and realized the odor was coming from that pretty girl. As I continued to stare at her, she suddenly turned towards me and smiled.
I instinctively shuddered; there was something odd about her smile. After that, she left the study room, and only then did I turn my gaze back to A Yao.
A Yao pouted and glared at me as if she were a bit angry. I wondered if I had upset her somehow.
“Wang Niu, are you interested in that girl? Because I noticed you staring at her,” she said.
I immediately understood and quickly denied it, saying, “No, it’s just that there was something strange about her smell. A Yao, don’t you smell anything?”
A Yao looked puzzled and asked if I had made a mistake. That girl had just transferred to their class, and I heard she was the daughter of some school board member, named Qiman.
I finally understood, but I still felt something strange about this girl named Qiman. So, I told A Yao to keep her distance from Qiman in the future.
A Yao looked at me in confusion and asked why.
I couldn't explain it either, so I just shook my head and went with A Yao to eat. When we arrived at the cafeteria, it was already packed with people. After choosing our meals, we searched for a place to sit. We waited for a long time, but no one left.
Just then, a few people finished eating, and I quickly pulled A Yao to sit at the newly vacated spot.
A Yao happily placed her tray down, sighed in relief, and said, "Finally, we can enjoy our meal."
I fondly watched A Yao as I handed her a chicken leg from my plate, encouraging her to eat more since she had lost weight these past few days. A Yao was delighted. Just then, an unexpected guest sat down beside us—it was the girl named Qiman.
"You don't mind if I sit here, do you?" she asked.
"I do mind."
"I don't mind."
Suddenly, I felt awkward. A Yao shot me a glare, seemingly thinking I was being too domineering; after all, there was no other space available, and Qiman was also a girl.
I had no choice but to lower my head and focus on my food while A Yao started chatting with Qiman, appearing to have a great time.
However, I felt uncomfortable. It seemed like someone was constantly staring at me with a chilling gaze.
Reacting instinctively, I lifted my head to search for the source of that gaze, only to find myself locking eyes with Qiman.
In just a few seconds, I felt the coldness in Qiman's eyes, as if I were standing in a graveyard.
I cleared my throat a few times and looked away, while A Yao, noticing the tension between Qiman and me, assumed there was something going on between us. Angrily, she picked up her tray and left.
My heart tightened; it seemed A Yao had misunderstood. I quickly stood up, preparing to follow her when Qiman also got up. She grabbed my arm and said in a strange tone, "Heh heh, I hope you can handle what’s about to happen next."
After saying that, Qiman took her tray and left as well.
I stood there in a daze. What did this mean? Who exactly was Qiman?
Once outside the cafeteria, A Yao was nowhere to be found. Anxiously, I picked up my phone to call her. Just as the call connected, A Yao hung up on me.
With no other option, I headed to the Girls' Dormitory. Just as I was about to go inside, I ran into Qiman again, who was holding a small black box.
Upon seeing me, she stopped and said, "Oh, by the way, I forgot to tell you something—I’m living with your girlfriend."
After that, she let out a few cold laughs and went upstairs.
