The once arrogant and domineering fox suddenly stopped laughing, its expression frozen in shock, as if it were experiencing some kind of pain. 0

Then, a red light emitted from the Imperial Position, tightly binding the fox around its waist. Within seconds, the fox was severed in two. 0

At that moment, I returned to normal, collapsing onto the ground. 0

Captain Wu quickly helped me up, asking with concern if I was alright. I shook my head, assuring him that I was fine, and turned my gaze back to the fox. 0

At this point, the Five Coin Formation had returned to its normal state and began to exert its power, extracting the essence from the fox's body. 0

I quickly reacted, picking up the remaining Dog Blood from the ground and splashing it onto the fox once more. Under the combined effects of the Five Coin Formation and Dog Blood, the fox let out a mournful cry, its body shrinking smaller and smaller. 0

I couldn't help but breathe a sigh of relief; that had truly been a moment of peril. Captain Wu and I had nearly lost our lives at the hands of this fox. 0

"Little brother, should we just shoot this fox now?" Captain Wu asked as he pulled out his pistol, seeing that the fox no longer had any strength to resist. 0

Just as I was about to respond to Captain Wu, I suddenly noticed tears streaming down the fox's face. It transformed into Xiaomei's likeness. For some reason, my heart softened at that sight, and I found myself reluctant to kill her. 0

Seeing my silence, Captain Wu assumed I was in agreement and raised his gun to aim at the fox. My heart raced as I immediately stopped him, saying we shouldn't act just yet. 0

Captain Wu looked at me in confusion and asked why we should let this fox go when it had taken so many lives. 0

I glanced at Captain Wu with a complicated expression, unsure how to answer. At that moment, the tears flowing from the fox's eyes turned a shocking shade of red. 0

Even more strangely, my feet began moving toward the fox on their own accord. Captain Wu called out to me several times, but I ignored him. 0

I approached the fox and crouched down before it. "If I let you go, will you forget all grievances in this world? Will you wipe the slate clean? You are a demon; if you can do good deeds and refrain from killing, surely you will reap a just reward." 0

The fox paused for a moment before lifting its head. Red tears continued to flow from its eyes as it replied, "How can I trust you?" 0

After hearing the fox's words, I stood up and jumped into the pool of water to remove the Imperial Position. The Five Coin Formation was thus rendered ineffective, and the light binding the fox slowly faded away. At that moment, the fox was freed. 0

"Why? Aren't you afraid that I might harbor murderous intent again?" The fox seemed surprised by my actions. 0

I smiled lightly and said, "Why wouldn't I be afraid? It's just that after understanding your circumstances clearly, I see you as a pitiful creature. It’s better to show mercy where one can." 0

The fox suddenly let out a soft laugh, a calm expression appearing on its face as it looked deeply into my eyes before leaving. 0

As soon as the fox departed, Captain Wu rushed to my side, astonished. "Little brother, how could you let the fox go? What if she harms someone else?" 0

I shook my head, insisting that she wouldn't. I couldn't explain why I trusted the fox so much, but my decision to spare her life would later save me. 0

Captain Wu seemed helpless, but at least this matter was settled. The challenge now was how to explain it to Chen's Father and Chen's Mother. 0

I descended the mountain with Captain Wu, and upon returning to the village chief's house, I found all the villagers gathered there, seemingly waiting for us. As soon as we arrived, the village chief hurriedly asked us about the outcome. 0

Captain Wu and I exchanged glances, silently agreeing on our response. I told the village chief that the issue with the fox had been resolved. 0

Upon hearing this, the village chief jumped for joy and quickly informed the villagers that they no longer needed to worry about the fox. He believed their village would soon return to its former state, which delighted everyone. 0

Captain Wu and I rested in the village for another night since it was quite late, and we were uneasy about returning to the city. The next morning, we bid farewell to the village chief and headed back to the city. 0

Having spent a few days in the village, I received a call from A Yao as soon as we returned. Her voice was filled with tears and panic, which broke my heart. I realized I had almost forgotten about her in these past few days. I immediately shared her address with Captain Wu. 0

Seeing my anxious expression, Captain Wu quickly drove us to A Yao's place. 0

When I finally saw A Yao, I noticed she looked haggard, as if she hadn't slept in days. Guilt washed over me—had something terrifying happened to her while I was away? 0

I hurriedly embraced A Yao and asked what was wrong. 0

For some reason, A Yao burst into tears and said that Feng Jie wanted to kill her. During my absence, she had nearly been pushed out of a window by Feng Yi. Fortunately, Chen's Father and Chen's Mother had heard the commotion and rushed into her room to save her. 0

I was taken aback by this revelation. Captain Wu beside me lost his composure and exclaimed, "Little brother, what's going on? Didn't Feng Yi die? How could this happen?" 0

After calming A Yao down, I recounted her ordeal to Captain Wu. 0

He was equally bewildered. "Feng Jie wasn't a good person when he was alive, yet he took care of A Yao. Why would he want to kill her? It doesn't make sense." 0

I too felt confused; what exactly was going on with Feng Jie? 0

After I had lulled A Yao to sleep, I accompanied Captain Wu to the room of Chen's Father and Chen's Mother. Facing them, my heart was filled with complexity. 0

I glanced at Captain Wu, who also seemed hesitant to speak. After all, the death of Chen Ming was too cruel; I thought that if Chen's Father and Chen's Mother heard about it, they would surely be devastated. 0

Perhaps our unusual demeanor alerted Chen's Father and Chen's Mother, as their emotions suddenly became tense. They asked us if it was about Chen Ming. 0

Captain Wu and I fell silent for a moment, contemplating that this matter would have to be addressed sooner or later. Stalemating was of no use, so I finally spoke up, giving Chen's Father and Chen's Mother a warning: "Uncle, Auntie, it's about Chen Ming, but you need to prepare yourselves." 0

As expected, upon hearing my words, Chen's Father and Chen's Mother seemed to anticipate something; they immediately burst into tears and could barely stand. Captain Wu and I hurriedly supported them. 0

Chen's Father and Chen's Mother cried sorrowfully, which made it even harder for me to continue. I glanced at Captain Wu in distress; he gestured for me to hold off on speaking. I nodded in agreement. 0

After a long while, their emotions gradually calmed down. Perhaps fearing that Chen's Mother might collapse again, Chen's Father suggested she rest first. However, Chen's Mother was unwilling and insisted on hearing about Chen Ming. With no other choice, Chen's Father urged us to go ahead and tell them what had happened; they could handle it. 0

Reluctantly, I conveyed the news of Chen Ming’s death to them. Indeed, upon hearing it, they nearly fainted. 0

Seeing their state broke my heart. 0

Chen's Father and Chen's Mother asked how Chen Ming had died. I hesitated for a moment before concealing the fact that Xiaomei had killed him. After all, I didn’t want to inflict further pain on them. So I fabricated a lie; although they were deeply saddened, there was still a glimmer of comfort as they said Xiaomei was a good girl and they knew she wouldn’t have done such a thing. When Xiaomei had come to their home, they had genuinely regarded her as their daughter-in-law. 0

Hearing this made my heart ache even more. If Xiaomei—rather, that fox—were to hear this, would she feel an overwhelming sense of guilt? 0
