"Hey, you're Wang Niu, right?"
As soon as Xiaomei spoke, I was startled. Could it be Chen Ming?
Xiaomei's next words confirmed my suspicion. She looked at me, her smile becoming even more sinister, and said, "You're right, it's Chen Ming. I saw your photo on his phone, and he told me your name is Wang Niu, his best classmate from university."
I had only suspected that Xiaomei was not human and was the one who killed Chen Ming. I never expected her words to directly confirm it.
Anger surged within me, and I exerted all my strength, but it was futile.
Before long, Xiaomei threw me out of the pool and slammed me onto the ground. At that moment, I caught sight of Captain Wu about to rush out from behind a large tree. My heart tightened, and I quickly signaled him with my eyes. Only then did Captain Wu retreat back behind the tree.
Xiaomei climbed out of the pool, but her beautiful appearance had vanished, revealing a fox-like visage while still retaining a human body.
With a vicious stomp on my back, she said, "Wang Niu, this situation had nothing to do with you initially. You brought this upon yourself, so don’t blame me."
As she spoke, I felt a force flipping me over, suspending me in mid-air. Xiaomei flew up alongside me so we faced each other directly.
I noticed the smile on Xiaomei's face becoming increasingly unsettling as she displayed her hands before me. In an instant, I saw that long nails had sprouted from her fingers.
"Wang Niu, Chen Ming said you are his best friend. Why not take this opportunity to join him?"
After she finished speaking, a chill rushed toward my face. Instinctively, I closed my eyes, expecting her long nails to pierce my body. Instead, I heard Xiaomei scream in agony. At that moment, I fell from mid-air; although it still hurt, at least I was free from danger.
Before I could comprehend what had just happened, Captain Wu appeared beside me and quickly helped me up. "Little brother, are you okay?"
I let out a deep sigh of relief and assured him that I was fine while turning my gaze to the still-suspended Xiaomei.
It was Captain Wu who had rushed out from behind the tree in a critical moment and splashed Dog Blood on Xiaomei, which saved me.
At this point, Xiaomei had completely shed her human skin and fallen to the ground. Naturally, the layer of skin soaked in Dog Blood was destroyed and ignited into flames, quickly disappearing.
Now reverted to her true fox form, Xiaomei writhed in pain as we prepared to extract the essence from within her.
Captain Wu glanced at me and asked what we should do next.
I thought quickly; now that the fox could no longer move and was stuck in mid-air, we needed to bring her down to place her in the Imperial Position. I explained this to Captain Wu, but he seemed worried. After a moment of silence, he shared the potential consequences with me.
I thought for a moment; it seemed there was no more danger. The fox had been subdued, so I told Captain Wu that everything was fine.
Seeing my certainty, Captain Wu didn't say anything further. He nodded and helped me bring the fox down, working together to place it in the Imperial Position.
Afterward, Captain Wu and I left the pool, but I forgot one crucial detail: Captain Wu was not supposed to touch the Five Coin Formation. Unfortunately, he accidentally made contact with it just moments ago.
Sure enough, before we reached the shore, an explosion erupted from the Imperial Position, sending a massive splash of water soaring into the air, drenching both me and Captain Wu.
The fox, which had been immobilized, suddenly regained its strength due to the disturbance in the Five Coin Formation. A chilling aura enveloped us, surrounding us like a deadly mist.
"What should we do, little brother?"
Although I felt anxious inside, I knew that panicking wouldn't solve anything. I instructed Captain Wu to remain still and observe how the fox would react.
Captain Wu acknowledged my command, and we positioned ourselves back-to-back, ready to face whatever might come.
The fox soared into the air, facing us directly. To my surprise, a swirling mass of dark energy surrounded it.
Could it be that the fox was absorbing power from the Five Coin Formation? My heart began to race with unease.
Seeing our helplessness only fueled the fox's arrogance; it laughed triumphantly as if we were mere prisoners at its mercy.
I couldn't stand the sight of the fox's smug expression any longer. If death was inevitable, then I would demand to know why it had killed Chen Ming.
The fox noticed my defiance and sneered. "Very well, since you want to know, I'll tell you."
Captain Wu and I exchanged glances as the fox began its tale.
The information we had gathered was indeed accurate. The real Xiaomei had died a year ago. When her family buried her, they encountered this fox's wandering spirit. For some unknown reason, a mysterious force drew the fox's spirit toward Xiaomei's body. This force originated from Xiaomei herself. Consequently, the fox's spirit entered Xiaomei's body through Li Cheng's chapter and quickly regained its former power.
From that moment on, the fox realized that this body was a source of strength and chose to hide within it.
As the fox recounted this story, Captain Wu interjected at just the right moment. "So after regaining your power, you returned to the village to kill people?"
The previously composed expression of the fox twisted into rage upon hearing Captain Wu's words. The surrounding dark energy intensified. My heart sank; could we have touched upon something deep within the fox? Previously, the village chief had mentioned that a woman in the village was killed because she had become pregnant with a Demonic Fetus. Could this fox be that very Demonic Fetus?
In an instant, the fox let out a wailing scream filled with resentment that lasted for a full minute, nearly shattering my and Captain Wu's eardrums.
"Little brother, what happened to this fox?"
I gestured for Captain Wu to remain silent; if we angered it, the consequences would be dire. Captain Wu nodded in agreement.
At that moment, the fox had vented most of its resentment. It paused, staring wide-eyed at me and Captain Wu. For some reason, we felt a deep sense of fear emanating from its gaze.
A few seconds later, the fox spoke again. "Hah, why did you kill those people? Don't you understand? Killing requires a life in return. They were the ones who forced my mother to her death. I am not some Demonic Fetus; I am a normal human being. It's just that when I was born, there was something strange about me. Do you know about the primate regression?"
Captain Wu and I nodded; we had heard of it before. In rare cases, newborns could regress to a primitive state due to some illness.
The fox continued, "Because my mother was unjustly killed by them at night while I was still in her womb, her resentment naturally transferred to me. I couldn't accept dying like this; I wanted those people to pay with their blood. By coincidence, a fox passed by my Tomb, and I used the energy of my resentment to attach my spirit to it. But this was not a long-term solution because I am a human soul and cannot reside in an animal for long. Soon enough, my spirit drifted out of the animal's body and encountered Xiaomei. Now, hah, I have signed a contract with the fox and become a true fox myself. As a Fox Demon, it is only natural for me to take lives and consume hearts. Besides, the people in this village deserve their fate; they should die."
After finishing her words, I caught a glimpse of red light flickering in the fox's eyes.
However, Chen Ming had no grudge against the Fox Demon; on the contrary, from Chen's father and mother, I learned that Chen Ming treated Xiaomei—no, rather the Fox Demon—very well.
The Fox Demon suddenly turned to me and smiled eerily. "As for Chen Ming, hah, he brought this upon himself. At first, Chen Ming treated me very well; he gave me the best of everything and held me dear to his heart. I never intended to kill him because I have a human heart too—I know warmth and coldness. But once Chen Ming discovered that I was a fox, I had no choice but to kill him."
