The ghosts that had been staring at the screen suddenly shifted their gaze towards me and A Yao. 0

In an instant, the atmosphere in the theater changed; even the movie had come to a halt. A Yao sensed something was off and whispered, "Wang Niu, why is everyone acting so strange? What’s going on in this theater?" 0

I felt a chill run down my spine as I explained to A Yao what I had noticed. Upon hearing this, her face turned pale, and she began to tremble. Without hesitation, I decided that we needed to escape; those ghosts were now focused on us. 0

I quickly grabbed A Yao's hand and ran out of the theater without stopping. Once we were outside the cinema and I saw that there was no immediate danger, I paused to catch my breath in a safe spot. 0

A Yao collapsed onto the ground, still looking panicked. After a moment, she turned her gaze towards me, her eyes filled with deep confusion. 0

I understood what she was asking but shook my head, admitting that I didn’t know either. Why were there so many ghosts in the cinema? 0

Before I could ponder further, A Yao urged me to hurry back to school. Perhaps she was still shaken by what we had witnessed inside. I nodded in agreement and led her back to campus, ensuring she got safely to her dormitory before heading back to mine. I had expected Chen Ming to be in our room since he hadn’t been around for a few days and hadn’t attended classes either. This wasn’t unusual for him, so I didn’t think much of it. However, when I returned, I found that Chen Ming still hadn’t come back. If this continued, he would surely face serious consequences from our advisor. 0

I splashed some water on my face and lay down on my bed. I tried calling Chen Ming but only got his voicemail. Frowning, I wondered if the online game he was playing was really that captivating. After several unsuccessful attempts to reach him, I set my phone aside and tried to rest. 0

The next morning, I was abruptly awakened by a persistent ringing sound. Groggily reaching for my phone, I realized it was a call from our advisor. Surprised, I thought it was unusual for them to call me directly—had I done something wrong? 0

With a sense of unease, I answered the call. The first thing our advisor asked was whether Chen Ming was in the dormitory. When I replied that he wasn’t, they hurriedly hung up. 0

Instinctively putting down my phone, I tried to go back to sleep but suddenly sat up straight as I recalled the urgency in our advisor's voice—it clearly indicated something was wrong. My desire to sleep vanished completely as I hastily washed up and threw on some clothes before heading out. 0

Upon arriving at the advisor's office, I walked in to find Chen Ming's parents crying loudly; they looked utterly heartbroken. 0

My heart sank at the sight as I stepped forward and asked the advisor if something had happened to Chen Ming. 0

My presence made the office fall silent; everyone turned their attention towards me, which made me feel uncomfortable. The advisor’s expression was grave, as if they were struggling to find words. They shook their head at me slowly. 0

At that moment, my heart sank even further. But then I recalled that Chen Ming had received a phone call and hurried out. If it weren't for the counselor, I suddenly remembered something and asked Chen's Father and Chen's Mother if they had called Chen Ming recently. 0

They shook their heads, saying that Chen Ming had been out of contact with them for almost three weeks. 0

Upon hearing this, I calculated that it was around the last time I saw Chen Ming. Who could it have been? As I pondered, footsteps echoed from the second floor. I instinctively turned to look, and it was the police. 0

Seeing the police arrive, Chen's Father and Chen's Mother rushed over to them, kneeling in front of the officers, pleading for them to find Chen Ming. He was their only son. 0

The police quickly helped Chen's Father and Chen's Mother to their feet, assuring them that they would do their best. They asked them to recount what had happened, and naturally, I stayed behind as well since I was Chen Ming's roommate and the last person to see him. 0

From Chen's Father and Chen's Mother, I learned that Chen Ming was a good son. Although he liked to skip classes, he also took on a part-time job and gave all his earnings to his parents. Furthermore, they mentioned that Chen Ming had a wonderful girlfriend and that they were planning to get married by the end of the year. 0

I was taken aback by this last piece of news. Chen Ming had never mentioned anything about it to me. Given our relationship, he wouldn't have kept such an important matter from me. Why had he hidden this? 0

Feeling puzzled, I asked Chen's Father and Chen's Mother if they had ever met Chen Ming's girlfriend. If they hadn't called him recently, perhaps she was the one they referred to. 0

They nodded, saying they had met her and that she was a lovely girl who was very beautiful. It was truly a stroke of luck for Chen Ming to find someone like her. 0

Curiosity piqued within me. Considering Chen Ming’s appearance, it seemed a bit challenging for him to attract a pretty girl in today's society where looks mattered so much. I asked if they had any photos; perhaps that girl could be the key to finding Chen Ming. Maybe she was the one who called him that day. 0

The police agreed, thinking it could be crucial information. Chen's Father and Chen's Mother hurriedly searched through their bags and after a long while pulled out a photo. They said it was a picture of Chen Ming with that girl. I felt a surge of excitement as I took the photo from their hands. Indeed, as they said, Chen Ming’s girlfriend was stunning—she possessed a delicate beauty with an alluring charm. However, her chin was very sharp, resembling the popular influencer look nowadays. Not only that, but her eyes were captivating; even in just a photo, her gaze stirred something within me. 0

I shook my head and turned my gaze away; I couldn't look any longer. 0

I asked Chen's Father and Chen's Mother if they knew where Chen Ming’s girlfriend lived or what her name was. They seemed taken aback and appeared to know nothing about her except that they always heard Chen Ming call her Xiaomei. 0

I frowned slightly; the name left an unpleasant impression on me. After taking down their statements, the police instructed Chen's Father and Chen's Mother to stay put for now. They would notify them of any developments or results and asked them to write down their phone number. 0

Soon after, the counselor assigned me the task of taking care of Chen's Father and Chen's Mother. He mentioned that if they needed money, I could let him know, and he would apply to the school for assistance. I nodded in response and took Chen's Father and Chen's Mother to their rented place. Previously, they had visited Chen Ming and even brought me some delicious food, which touched my heart. Now that Chen Ming was missing, it was only right for me to take good care of Chen's Father and Chen's Mother. 0

As time went by, I naturally grew closer to Chen's Father and Chen's Mother. 0

Chen's Father sighed and said how nice it would be if nothing had happened to Chen Ming. They might not have traveled such a long way otherwise. Looking at the wrinkled face of Chen's Father, I felt a pang of sadness in my heart. It reminded me of my own parents, so I quickly comforted them, assuring them that Chen Ming would be safe. 0

In the following days, I kept running back and forth between the classroom and Chen's Father and Chen's Mother. A Yao understood my situation and didn’t say much; instead, he helped keep Chen's Father and Chen's Mother company. For a moment, I felt as if I were their son. 0

To ease their worries, I asked A Yao to look after them while I went to the police station to gather information. 0

It seemed that every officer in the station was busy with their work. I didn’t want to disturb them, so I sat outside waiting. 0

At that moment, I heard a car pull up outside the station. Instinctively, I looked out and saw Captain Wu getting out of a vehicle. He was covered in mud from head to toe, looking quite comical. I couldn’t help but laugh. 0

Just then, Captain Wu looked up at me, making me feel like I had been caught in the act. I quickly composed myself. 0

Captain Wu smirked and walked over with a resigned expression, saying that it wasn’t fair for me to laugh at him. 0

I had intended to joke with Captain Wu but then remembered that I might need his help regarding Chen Ming’s case. So, I immediately denied it and asked where he had been to get so muddy. 0

Captain Wu sighed, his expression growing more exasperated as he asked if I remembered what he had told me about the missing bodies at the hospital in City. Of course, I remembered. He continued explaining that two days ago, they received an anonymous call claiming to know where the hospital’s missing bodies were located. They rushed to the location mentioned in the call and began digging. To their surprise, they unearthed dozens of coffins—newly made ones that hadn’t been sealed yet. At first, they were hesitant; if they opened the wrong one, they would be pointed at by the crowd. After much deliberation, they decided to open them anyway. When they did, they indeed found the missing bodies from the hospital because each body had a mark on it. Subsequently, they notified the hospital staff to come collect the bodies. 0
