Uncle Tiger nodded and said, "Look at Aunt A-Yao's expression; she looks very surprised, which means she knows the person. After being cruelly killed by them, they used the Soul Binding Technique on her to prevent her vengeful spirit from seeking revenge. However, Aunt A-Yao's resentment was so deep that it broke through the binding ropes on her soul. The other party noticed this and placed a red flag here to counteract Aunt A-Yao's spirit energy. That's why the soul that entered your body at the beginning was a remnant soul; Aunt A-Yao's spirit had already been significantly depleted. If we had arrived even a moment later, we wouldn't have found this place at all. Without her spirit, relying solely on energy wouldn't work."
As he spoke, a wave of guilt surged within me. If it weren't for me, perhaps Aunt A-Yao wouldn't have faced such a fate. Uncle Tiger looked at my expression and sighed deeply. "Wang Niu, what's done is done. Now we need to get to the bottom of this. Send a text to A-Yao and tell her to call the police. With their help, we might be able to find that person. Then, ask your grandfather; he might know something."
That was all we could do for now. I agreed and left the mountain with Uncle Tiger. Once back at our place, I immediately sent a message to A-Yao. Soon after, she called me, crying heartbreakingly on the other end of the line. Listening to her made my heart ache even more. I wanted to comfort her and explain everything in detail when Uncle Tiger stopped me, saying that it wasn't safe for A-Yao to know just yet; otherwise, she would be in even greater danger.
I had no choice but to find an excuse and hurriedly ended the call. The next morning, the police suddenly showed up at our door, inquiring about Aunt A-Yao's case. Uncle Tiger and I didn't hide anything and told them everything that had happened. As a result, the officer questioning us looked at us like we were monsters.
After all, if one hadn't witnessed it firsthand, they would think it was absurd. When the police couldn't find any conclusive evidence from our statements, they told us not to leave town casually as they might summon us again later before departing.
Once the door was closed, I anxiously asked Uncle Tiger what would happen if the police mistakenly thought we were responsible for Aunt A-Yao's death. Uncle Tiger reassured me not to worry; the police would make their own judgments. What he was more concerned about was A-Yao's safety; since that person had killed Aunt A-Yao, they might extend their hand towards A-Yao as well. We needed to ensure her safety.
I asked Uncle Tiger if we should bring A-Yao closer to us. After thinking for a moment, he replied, "That's not practical; you still have classes and can't skip school every day. Just make sure A-Yao isn't alone and keep an eye out for any suspicious people around you."
I nodded seriously and exchanged a few more words with Uncle Tiger before calling A-Yao to ask where she was and then rushed over to find her.
At that moment, A-Yao was at home where they had already set up a mourning hall. Since I was an outsider, I couldn't go in directly and had to ask A-Yao to come out instead. As soon as she saw me, she threw herself into my arms, tears streaming down her face.
After a while, when A-Yao stopped crying, she asked me, "Wang Niu, do you know how my aunt died?"
Recalling Uncle Tiger's words, I decided to change the subject and said, "A-Yao, now is not the time for that question. You shouldn't act alone in the future; it's best if you call me if anything happens, okay?"
A-Yao looked confused and asked what was wrong. This question left me unsure of how to respond. Rubbing my head in thought, I asked her back: "Has your aunt been in close contact with anyone recently?"
Initially shaking her head in denial, A-Yao's expression suddenly changed as she exclaimed excitedly: "There was a man! He came looking for my aunt several times recently; she seemed very happy whenever she saw him."
"A man? What did he look like?"
A-Yao lowered her gaze and shook her head in disappointment, saying she only saw his back and didn't get a clear look at his face; besides, it seemed her aunt didn't want them knowing about him.
My heart sank as it felt like we had hit another dead end. Seeing me silent made A-Yao hug me tightly again and cautiously say: "Wang Niu, can you forgive me?"
Looking down at A-Yao in my arms made my heart race with an overwhelming sense of helplessness. I held her tightly and inhaled her scent while silently vowing not to let that person lay their hands on her.
After exchanging a few more words with A-Yao, I temporarily said goodbye and returned home. Just as I reached the door, I found a man in police uniform standing outside—he wasn't one of those who had come before.
Upon seeing me, he introduced himself: "Hello, I'm Captain Wu from the Criminal Police Team. I'd like to understand more about yesterday's incident."
Captain Wu's gaze was piercing and carried an unspoken pressure that made me uncomfortable. Clearing my throat, I opened the door wider for him to enter and sit down while he continued staring intently at me as if examining a suspect.
Feeling uneasy under his scrutiny, I finally spoke up: "Captain Wu, what is this about?"
To my surprise, Captain Wu chuckled and said: "I've heard everything you said yesterday and reviewed the Autopsy Report; I've conducted an investigation too. The body has been dead for nearly two weeks now; you can be ruled out as suspects. However, I'm curious about who you really are and how you came by this information."
I didn't answer Captain Wu directly but instead asked him: "Do you believe us?"
Captain Wu burst into laughter again: "Why wouldn't I? I've seen all sorts of bizarre cases in my years as a police officer—there's an old saying: 'The world is vast; nothing is too strange.'"
This made me warm up slightly towards Captain Wu's attitude as I asked: "So what do you want from us today?"
Captain Wu got straight to the point: "I'm here today because I'd like your help with something; if anything comes up in return, I'll help you too."
I couldn't help but curse Captain Wu inwardly for trying to play games here but felt it best not to outright refuse him either.
Just then Uncle Tiger returned from outside. Captain Wu immediately noticed him and stood up respectfully introducing himself while explaining his purpose for being there.
To my surprise, Uncle Tiger readily agreed without hesitation! Just as I was about to speak up against it, Uncle Tiger shot me a glance that silenced me instantly.
Captain Wu seemed pleased by this development and urged us to follow him quickly since it was urgent; he mentioned that higher-ups were pressuring him regarding this matter.
We followed Captain Wu into his car and arrived at the Funeral Home shortly after.
Before long someone came out to lead us into a room that looked different from an ordinary morgue—its walls were covered with talismans while garlic cloves adorned the corpse inside.
I was taken aback; it seemed like they were warding off evil spirits.
Before Captain Wu could say anything further, Uncle Tiger interjected: "This corpse has some issues right? There's something inside."
Captain Wu paused in surprise looking at Uncle Tiger with astonished eyes filled with excitement as he nodded repeatedly: "You truly are remarkable! You can see right through it! Here's what happened—the female corpse was murdered at home about a month ago; initially just an ordinary criminal case—but after the autopsy report came out strange things began happening—the corpse suddenly appeared pregnant! Somehow this got out to the family who caused quite an uproar making it impossible for us to contain things anymore—now there's immense pressure coming down on me."
I stared incredulously at Captain Wu but thought back on all these bizarre occurrences lately—it didn’t seem so far-fetched anymore.
Uncle Tiger pondered for a moment before asking Captain Wu: "Could there have been an error in the initial autopsy report?"
Captain Wu shook his head firmly: "That’s impossible! Forensic experts are meticulous during examinations—and besides—the victim was just a young girl who wasn’t pregnant."
Upon hearing this Uncle Tiger’s expression darkened as he approached the corpse pulling back its white sheet revealing its distended belly which looked grotesquely swollen with visible veins protruding across its surface.
Uncle Tiger’s gaze remained fixed on the body deep in thought while neither Captain Wu nor I dared interrupt him until finally he instructed Captain Wu: “Go fetch a shroud for corpses.”
Captain Wu quickly relayed orders but couldn’t help asking Uncle Tiger why he needed one.
"This may lead towards some form of corpse transformation!"
"What?" Both Captain Wu and I exclaimed simultaneously wide-eyed in shock.
Uncle Tiger remained calm urging us closer towards inspecting the body closely.
To our horror long black nails had sprouted from both hands and feet of the corpse!
"This... how could this happen? This wasn’t present before!" Captain Wu stammered incoherently.
Uncle Tiger nodded indicating towards its belly explaining: “There’s heavy Yin Qi concentrated here—the spread of Yin Qi is rapid especially given how dense it is within this Funeral Home—within just one night it could transform into what we see now—and someone has planted Ghost Child within.”
"You mean someone infiltrated this Funeral Home inserting Ghost Child into this corpse?" Captain Wu appeared bewildered by this revelation.
Uncle Tiger shook his head stating: “Ghost Child takes time before manifesting—but still wouldn’t cause such drastic changes.”
Captain Wu fell silent absorbing everything being said.
At that moment someone returned carrying shrouds meant for corpses which prompted Uncle Tiger signaling for me join him dressing up the body.
Internally resisting due fear of handling an actual corpse—I steeled myself nonetheless preparing myself mentally before proceeding forward.
Everything went smoothly until suddenly when securing its head—a bizarre scene unfolded—the previously closed eyes snapped open staring directly at me!
I screamed instinctively while Uncle Tiger reacted swiftly covering my eyes shouting loudly: “Don’t scream! It’s just dead eyes!”
Then he recited something causing those eyes once again shut tight.
We all breathed sighs of relief though tension hung heavily over everyone present creating an oppressive atmosphere around us.
Uncle Tiger draped shroud over corpse then cut out shapes resembling roosters onto it before turning back towards Captain Wu stating: “For now there’s no immediate danger posed by this body—but we must locate suspects quickly if we wish resolve matters completely.”
Captain Wu appeared somewhat defeated sighing deeply: “There are absolutely no clues left behind—everything seems intact—no signs whatsoever.”
Uncle Tiger furrowed his brow contemplating before finally suggesting: “Can we visit crime scene?”
