Zhang Xiaoxiao turned around and went back into the house. Just as she sat down, she heard another knock at the door.
Impatiently, she got up. "Who is it?"
"It's me, Li Xiumei."
"......"
Zhang Xiaoxiao was speechless for a moment but eventually went to open the door.
As soon as the door opened, Li Xiumei glared at Zhang Xiaoxiao. "Zhang Xiaoxiao, I'm asking you one more time: did you spread rumors about me in the village?"
"......"
Zhang Xiaoxiao looked at her in disbelief. "You came all this way just for that?"
"Yes, just for that."
Zhang Xiaoxiao raised an eyebrow at her response. "Are you sure?"
"Of course I'm sure!"
"Alright, then I'll tell you." Zhang Xiaoxiao crossed her arms and smiled at her. "Yes, I did spread your story."
Li Xiumei was stunned. "You admit it?"
"Yeah, I admit it. So what?"
"......"
Li Xiumei was left speechless.
She had prepared a whole arsenal of sharp words to scold Zhang Xiaoxiao fiercely, but she never expected Zhang Xiaoxiao to admit it so openly, leaving her with a belly full of words that she couldn't utter.
Looking at Zhang Xiaoxiao's expression was like watching a little kitten—cute yet fierce.
"You..." Li Xiumei struggled for a long time before finally managing to ask, "Why did you do this?"
Zhang Xiaoxiao tilted her head and looked at her. "Are you sure you want to know the reason?"
"Yes."
"Alright." Zhang Xiaoxiao nodded. "Actually, you are not your parents' biological daughter."
"What did you say?" Li Xiumei looked at her in shock.
"You are not your parents' biological daughter; you are the young lady of the male lead's family," Zhang Xiaoxiao said slowly and clearly.
"No way." Li Xiumei's face turned pale. "You're lying to me, right? How could I not be my parents' biological daughter?"
Zhang Xiaoxiao sighed. "You really aren't their biological daughter. They have known about this for a long time; they just kept it from you."
"No way..." Li Xiumei still refused to believe it.
Zhang Xiaoxiao shrugged. "Believe it or not, it's up to you."
"But how do you know about this?" Li Xiumei looked at her suspiciously.
"That's because..." Zhang Xiaoxiao paused for a moment, "because I love gossip. I've heard all the stories in the village."
"Gossip? What gossip?" Li Xiumei looked completely bewildered.
"That's just gossip."
"What is gossip?"
"Well..." Zhang Xiaoxiao suddenly realized that ancient people didn't refer to it as gossip; they called it rumors or idle talk.
So she explained, "It's just hearsay, do you understand hearsay?"
"You..." Li Xiumei's expression immediately darkened.
She never expected Zhang Xiaoxiao would say something like that.
"How can you listen to such hearsay?" Li Xiumei said angrily.
Zhang Xiaoxiao rolled her eyes at this. "Why can't I listen?"
"You..." Li Xiumei was at a loss for words.
Seeing this, Zhang Xiaoxiao waved her hand dismissively. "Forget it, you should just go. I need to rest."
"I'm not leaving." Li Xiumei stubbornly stood at the door. "I want to wait for Brother Zhao to come back."
"......"
Zhang Xiaoxiao was speechless.
Why was this girl so stubborn?
"Are you going to leave or not?" Zhang Xiaoxiao asked, a bit impatiently.
"I said I'm not leaving."
"Fine, if you're not leaving, then I will." Zhang Xiaoxiao said as she moved to close the door.
Seeing this, Li Xiumei quickly reached out to block the door.
Zhang Xiaoxiao: "......"
"Do you have any more questions?" Zhang Xiaoxiao asked helplessly.
"I..." Li Xiumei hesitated for a moment but ultimately asked, "I want to know why Brother Zhao likes you?"
"......"
Zhang Xiaoxiao was taken aback by the question.
She hadn't expected Li Xiumei to ask something like that.
Looking at Li Xiumei, she saw her staring intently, seemingly eager for an answer.
Zhang Xiaoxiao touched her nose and said, "Well, maybe it's because my charm is just too great."
"......"
Li Xiumei's face darkened immediately.
"You're just bragging."
"I'm not bragging; I'm stating facts," Zhang Xiaoxiao replied earnestly. "If you don't believe me, you can ask Zhao Guangcai."
Li Xiumei: "......"
She certainly wanted to ask, but she didn't dare.
Zhang Xiaoxiao noticed her silence and said, "If you don't have anything else to discuss, you should hurry and leave."
Li Xiumei bit her lip. "I have one more question."
"What is it?" Zhang Xiaoxiao asked, a hint of impatience creeping into her voice.
"How do you know about my background?" Li Xiumei inquired.
Upon hearing this, Zhang Xiaoxiao blinked. "Because I'm clever."
"You..." Li Xiumei was at a loss for words.
Seeing her angry expression, Zhang Xiaoxiao couldn't help but laugh. "Alright, I'm not teasing you anymore. I heard it from my family."
"Your family?" Li Xiumei looked at her suspiciously. "Who are they?"
"My family..." Zhang Xiaoxiao pondered for a moment. "My family is..."
Just as she was about to say it was the village chief, they heard Zhao Guangcai's voice from behind.
"Xiaoxiao."
Both Zhang Xiaoxiao and Li Xiumei turned around in unison.
Zhao Guangcai stood at the door holding two rabbits, looking at the two of them with a slight frown. "What are you doing?"
Li Xiumei's eyes were glued to the rabbits in Zhao Guangcai's hands, and she couldn't help but lick her lips. It had been a long time since she had eaten meat. If only her family could have some meat too.
Seeing that neither of them spoke, Zhao Guangcai asked again, "What are you up to?"
"Oh, nothing much," Zhang Xiaoxiao snapped back to reality and walked over. "Why are you back so early today?"
"I got lucky today and caught two rabbits," Zhao Guangcai replied, raising the rabbits in his hands. "Do you want some?"
"Sure," Zhang Xiaoxiao nodded.
Li Xiumei suddenly came back to herself and exclaimed, "Brother Zhao, can you sell me one of those rabbits?"
Zhao Guangcai and Zhang Xiaoxiao both turned to look at Li Xiumei.
Li Xiumei quickly explained, "My parents haven't eaten meat in a long time, so..."
