Arrogant, truly too arrogant.
"Killing him wouldn't even satisfy my hatred. If I had caught him that day, I would have definitely slaughtered him."
He was born a bad seed, utterly contemptuous and dismissive of everything. Not only that, he roamed the streets wielding a sickle, committing crimes left and right.
You could hear the sickle slicing through flesh, the sound of it rising and falling, and you could feel just how cruel and lethal his methods were. After his rampage, he felt exhilarated.
But this also left a woman and three men without everything overnight.
Who would have thought that this pitiful and timid woman, time and again choosing to endure and retreat, would not gain her husband's sympathy? Instead, she was met with his increasingly frenzied jealousy and irrational violence.
The madness of a serial killer's love.
That morning, the Jagdach 110 Command Center received a report stating that a murder had occurred in a small inn on a certain street, where a man had been killed. Immediately, the command center organized police forces, who arrived at the crime scene within minutes.
The investigating officers were accustomed to scenes of death and hatred, but what lay before them still shocked them.
They proceeded to examine the scene; the victim lay in a pool of blood with as many as twelve wounds on his body, all inflicted by sharp instruments. There were also large splatters of blood on the walls. The police analyzed that there must have been immense hatred between the suspect and the victim.
Subsequently, the officers checked the inn's registration book and identified the victim. His name was Zhang Lei, 38 years old, having just arrived in the area less than two months ago to work on a farm. Aside from that, no useful clues were found at the scene.
Just as the police were about to leave the scene, the 110 Command Center received another report: another murder had occurred less than a kilometer away on the street. The police rushed to that location as well. Upon arrival, they discovered a taxi parked by the roadside with its driver dead inside.
The police immediately examined the scene and found that the methods used in both murders were strikingly similar. Thus, they speculated that both cases were likely committed by the same person.
Within just two hours, two murders occurred in quick succession, and the methods used were strikingly similar.
The police recognized the seriousness of the situation. They immediately launched an overnight investigation and deployed forces to track down the suspect. Finally, thirteen hours after the incidents, they successfully apprehended Suspect.
Suspect, named Lin Futian, is 44 years old and worked at the same farm as the victims from the inn. The police then conducted an urgent interrogation of Lin Futian. In the interrogation room, he still did not realize the gravity of his heinous crimes and argued with the officers present.
"Am I wronged? It was Zhang Lei who seduced my wife. We need to clarify this. If I’m dead, I should be shot; if I killed someone, then I should die. You say I killed someone? We need to get this straight, right?"
He believed that this would allow him to evade legal consequences. It turned out that everything he did was related to his wife. His wife was also taken in for questioning by the police on suspicion of complicity.
According to Suspect, two years ago he brought his wife and child from their hometown in Jilin to Jagdach, where they worked on a farm. Although life was tough, it was manageable. That was until a month ago when the first victim from the inn, Zhang Lei, arrived, which changed their lives.
Zhang Lei had a cheerful personality and often joked with Lin Futian's wife while working on the farm.
"They would just chat, asking where you work or about family stuff."
Their relationship had already been strained, and Zhang Lei’s presence made communication even more difficult. Just ten days prior, while walking home from work, he encountered Zhang Lei, who walked ahead with his wife. At that moment, he felt particularly out of place and was infuriated to see his wife laughing and talking with someone else.
His wife did not notice anything amiss until they got home. Seeing her husband downing drink after drink made her sense that something was wrong.
"He came out with a knife again; I thought I should hide for a bit."
She mentioned that just because she chatted with Zhang Lei on their way home, it enraged this beast, who then brandished a sickle intending to attack his partner of seventeen years.
"It felt like he had gone mad; I can't even describe what I felt inside."
The thought that this beast would kill her while drunk made her shiver with fear. That night she said nothing; she simply wore her autumn clothes and stayed outside all night long. With temperatures dropping below freezing, she trembled in the cold, feeling utterly disheartened by this beast.
One day, he overheard rumors about his impending remarriage, which caused a drastic change in his temperament. Whenever he found himself talking to another woman, suspicion would creep in, leading him to drink heavily upon returning home. This would inevitably result in arguments and even physical violence against his wife.
"We've fought over this before, and after he drinks, I plan to talk to him about it," she said.
Lin Futian admitted that every time he drank, he would get drunk, and when drunk, he would lash out without restraint, depending on his mood. Yet, when the alcohol wore off and he saw his wife with bruises and a battered face, a pang of guilt would hit him.
However, the thrill of domination and release was far more intoxicating for him.
This was also why his wife had never dared to resist him in all those years. After that, she stopped speaking to other men entirely, which gave him a sense of pride as a man.
But unexpectedly, a few days later, his coworker Zhang Lei came to their home. His anger flared up even more; to avoid an outright confrontation, he allowed Zhang Lei to stay for dinner.
They drank heavily and ate well, but the more he drank, the more he disliked Zhang Lei. After sending Zhang Lei off, he once again unleashed his fury on his wife. She later claimed that the pain was unbearable, yet she sensed a lurking danger in his demeanor.
"Because I heard he was sharpening a knife a few days ago, I grew increasingly fearful. So I broke free and ran out of the house but didn’t go far; I stayed under my son's window all night."
Lin Futian recounted that he was furious at the time. Seeing how Zhang Lei looked at his wife while eating only fueled his anger further. The thought that his wife had run out to find Zhang Lei drove him back to the table for another few drinks. Then he grabbed the sickle he had sharpened days earlier and stormed into his son's room. His stunned son barely had time to react.
"What are you doing?"
"I'm going to take care of him; I'm going to kill him."
At that moment, his expression was fierce.
Under his intimidation, he dragged his son to the inn where Zhang Lei was staying and knocked on Zhang Lei's door. By then, his son was too afraid to face his father.
"I closed my eyes; I just couldn’t bear to look. All I could hear was the knife clanging."
Zhang Lei, who met a tragic end, never understood the reason behind his demise until his last moment. After leaving the inn, he and his son got into a taxi, intending to escape. Perhaps the taxi driver was frightened by them, as he refused to take them and ordered them out of the car.
"He won't leave. He won't leave. He's making a call in the car; he might be afraid that the driver will report us," Lin Futian told his son.
Lin Futian then suggested killing the driver as well.
In less than half an hour, Lin Futian brutally murdered the taxi driver. When his son hurried back and recounted what had just happened to his mother, she collapsed on the ground. After regaining her composure, she fled with her son in a panic, but they were soon apprehended by the police.
Meanwhile, Lin Futian was also captured by the police less than 13 hours later while trying to escape on another road. Upon his arrest, he lamented when he learned that his wife and son had also been caught and were being held in custody.
"Kill him. Killing him wouldn't satisfy my anger. If only I had caught him that day, I would have slaughtered him. If he hadn't shown up, none of this would have happened."
He firmly believed that Zhang Lei deserved to die and was convinced that his wife had betrayed him. But was that really the case?
"He doesn't dare. I'll beat him up. He sneaks around to the back window."
Then my mother came over and knocked on the window, saying, "I'll stay here tonight."
The child also revealed his mother's whereabouts that night.
Yet who could have imagined that this pitiful and timid woman, time and again choosing to endure and retreat, would not receive her husband's sympathy but instead provoke even more of his irrational jealousy and violent outbursts?
