On the surface, it was a school playground, but beneath it lay the remains of an innocent teacher.
"At first glance, it looked like a human head, a skull," someone remarked.
"Indeed, it was a human head. I was stunned and stepped back several meters; I couldn't bear to look."
Sixteen years ago, a dedicated teacher mysteriously vanished from the school, and when he reappeared sixteen years later, it was as a pile of bones buried beneath the playground.
Though everyone knew the truth, no one dared to speak up.
If not for the relentless efforts of his family over the past sixteen years to search for him, he might never have seen the light of day again.
Even more bizarrely, when the murderer was apprehended, it turned out there were even greater secrets hidden away. Could you handle that?
On June 18, 2019, in Xinhang County, Hunan Province, a well-known legend circulated at Xinhang No. 1 High School: there was likely a teacher buried beneath the playground.
Rumors spread among neighbors and townsfolk that a teacher was buried under the school playground.
With the roar of excavators, a shocking truth that affected many was about to surface.
The person in the photo was named Deng Shiping, a teacher at Xinhang No. 1 High School. His daughter, Deng Ling, vividly remembered that on the morning of January 22, 2003, her father went to work as usual but never returned home that night, leaving his family frantic with worry.
The next day, they rushed to find Principal Huang Bingsong to inquire about Deng Shiping's whereabouts. Upon hearing this, Huang panicked and quickly gathered seventy teachers to search for him, turning the entire school upside down but finding nothing. What shocked Deng Shiping's family even more were the sudden rumors that began to circulate.
"Some said my father had gone off to work elsewhere; others claimed he had absconded with money."
Naturally, the family could not accept these claims. It was revealed that Deng Shiping had been supervising renovations on the school playground, and the contractor was none other than Principal Huang Bingsong's nephew. The family of Du Shaoping discovered in Deng Shiping's diary that he had argued multiple times with Du Shaoping over issues related to the quality of the construction work.
What made the family even more suspicious was that after Deng Shiping went missing, two large pits had appeared on the playground for several days, yet Du Shaoping had hurriedly gathered people to fill them in overnight, braving the heavy rain. This was clearly a case of something being off. The family quickly confronted Du Shaoping, who claimed ignorance but trembled all over.
"Your hands are shaking; that trembling proves you’ve done something wrong and are feeling guilty."
He was definitely hiding something. With no leads in their search, the family had no choice but to report this information to the investigator. However, they were told that Deng Shiping was merely missing and that a case could not be opened.
"What do you mean there’s insufficient evidence? If there’s insufficient evidence, you need to find it!"
The family was anxious and helpless. To seek justice, Deng Shiping's 70-year-old mother, Wei Qinghe, who had been a retired teacher for many years, wrote a lengthy letter of appeal in March 2003 to the relevant authorities. In her letter, she insisted that Deng Shiping's disappearance was not ordinary; he had been murdered.
The two large pits on the playground had been filled in urgently, and it was highly likely that Deng Shiping had been buried within them. Due to the numerous suspicious aspects of the case, it immediately drew the attention of the Hunan Provincial Public Security Department, which demanded the establishment of a special task force to investigate Deng Shiping's disappearance.
Months later, local police still refused to open a case, citing the lack of a body and thus classifying it as a missing person case. However, at that time, the playground was still under construction and had not yet been paved with rubber; all it would take was an excavator for half a day’s work to uncover the truth, costing at most a few hundred yuan.
What puzzled Deng's family even more was why such a simple task was not carried out. Du Shaoping, who happened to be involved in the entire process, could hardly contain himself as he declared that Deng Shiping had already been murdered. On that fateful day at noon on the 12th, Du Shaoping killed Deng Shiping with a hammer and warned everyone not to speak of it.
"If you don’t report it, I won’t report it; if you do report it, I’ll kill you first and then..."
That night, he and his accomplices, including Luo Guangzhong, buried him beneath the playground. Yet despite his accomplices confessing, Du Shaoping continued to deny everything. The investigator believed that there was only one way to make him confess: they needed to dig up Deng Shiping's body.
On June 8, 2019, after Luo Guangzhong pointed out the approximate location, a large-scale excavation began. From 8 AM until 9 PM that day, as the rain poured heavier and heavier, they could only pump out water while digging. By 6 PM on June 9, they finally made a significant discovery.
"It’s a round object; everyone can see it might be a human head."
"Indeed, it is a human head."
Standing nearby, Deng Ling was already in tears.
"I found my father's remains!" She collapsed onto the ground in sobs.
After DNA comparison, it was confirmed that the deceased was indeed Deng Shiping, who had been missing for 16 years. With this crucial evidence, Du Shaoping's psychological defenses finally collapsed, and he confessed to the crime.
One cannot help but wonder what conflict occurred between the two that led to such a violent outcome.
According to Du Shaoping's testimony, he had successfully secured a project through the underhanded dealings of his uncle, Huang Bingsong. At that time, the school teacher, Deng Shiping, was responsible for supervising the quality of the work. However, during the renovation process, Du Shaoping cut corners. The principled Deng Shiping refused to sign off on the work and reported the matter to Principal Huang Bingsong.
Coincidentally, the education bureau received a complaint letter regarding issues with the playground. Du Shaoping believed that Deng Shiping was behind it and harbored resentment, deciding to eliminate him. He purchased some sleeping pills in advance.
On January 23, 2003, he put his plan into action. That afternoon, another teacher, Yao Benying, was playing chess with Deng Shiping in the project office when Du Shaoping walked in. He watched for a while before offering them drinks. Deng Shiping had no idea that his drink was laced with sleeping pills and drank it all in one go.
Seeing his initial plan succeed, Du Shaoping quickly called his accomplices to send Yao Benying away. He took out pre-prepared rope and tape and bound the unconscious Deng Shiping before brutally killing him. With the help of several others, they buried him in the playground.
After completing this heinous act, he sought help from his uncle Huang Bingsong, who then contacted a former student—Yang Jun, the former political commissar of the Xinhui County Public Security Bureau—to cover up the incident. Thus, the crime buried for 16 years finally came to light.
At that time, Deng Shiping's mother was already 91 years old and suffering from dementia. Upon hearing this news, she cried for an entire afternoon.
"My aunt mentioned my grandmother; as a result, she cried all afternoon. She still felt something."
In the end, Du Shaoping was sentenced to death. The protective umbrella behind the case also fell apart; former principal Huang Bingsong and Yang Jun were both sentenced to 15 years in prison. A total of 19 public officials faced varying degrees of punishment.
At last, the case was solved.
