Living Funeral
I said, "What does it matter if I've seen Longevity?"
Xiao Tongwen asked, "Does that mean you're about to set off?"
I responded with a slight hum. It was no big deal; if I had to go, then I would. The expressions on these people's faces were so serious, as if they believed once they left, they would never return. Yet, they all seemed ready to face death head-on.
Xiao Tongwen continued, "Then why don't you tell us?"
I replied, "I was only thinking of telling you after handling things over there. If it weren't for now, Longevity wouldn't have anything to do with you."
Xiao Tongwen said, "Longevity wants us to meet those we wish to see soon, so let's prepare."
That was more or less the meaning, but it was too obvious. It really felt like we were going to our deaths.
Zhang Xun remarked, "Chen Fei, I have no one I want to see. If it's time to go, just call me."
Nian Chen added, "The person I want to see is right here with me." When Nian Chen said this, there was a hint of a smile at the corner of his mouth. Hu Qingming and Xiao Tongwen looked as if they had lost all hope in life. Since everyone felt this way, what was there to be sad about? Death was just death.
Li Guang stood still, watching us speak.
I paused for a few seconds and asked Li Guang, "Why are you following me?"
Li Guang replied, "Can I stay with you for a night? I have nowhere else to go."
I said no; couldn't he see how many people were here? Li Guang fell silent. I added, "There's something I need to discuss with you. Come out with me for a moment; I'll be quick."
I hummed in agreement and quickly followed Li Guang downstairs. The others wanted to come along but I persuaded them not to. I assured them I'd be back soon. Once downstairs, Li Guang walked ahead eagerly as if he were in a race.
I shouted, "Li Guang, come follow me quickly."
Although I had no idea where this guy was headed, I decided to follow him and see. We walked for quite a distance before he finally stopped. I turned to Li Guang.
At that moment, the surroundings were silent, with no one in sight. I wondered how this old fellow had found such a place. "Li Guang, I actually don't have much to say, just a few simple words. Li Guang, what simple words?"
I couldn't shake the feeling that this old guy was anything but ordinary. After a moment of silence, Li Guang said, "This time on the road, some people will need to die."
I asked, "What do you mean?"
Li Guang replied, "You can't possibly not know, Chen Fei."
I glanced at Li Guang. He continued, "Have you decided when to set out?"
I said it would be in a few days; I didn't want to wait too long, and the timing seemed right. Li Guang looked up and said it was indeed about time. "What do you plan to do with those dead people?"
I had no response; it felt like this old guy was trying to pry information from me. I said to Li Guang, "Aren't you supposed to be able to tell fortunes? Why don't you give it a try?"
Li Guang replied, "This matter is related to you; I'm afraid to calculate it. It might shorten my life!"
I: ...
This old fellow was indeed afraid of death. However, I thought that Jiang Changsheng's side should be ready by now. With that thought, I felt a little calmer.
I said to Li Guang, "Since you're not going on the road anyway, why ask so many questions?"
Li Guang responded, "Yes! It's your generation that's involved; it has nothing to do with me!"
I: ...
He really knows how to distinguish things. Even if the sun and moon were to change, that old fellow would still live just fine, so what’s there to worry about? The one who should be worried is me.
I suddenly let out a long sigh and said, "You've done what you should; why are you still standing here?"
Li Guang, Chen Fei, sometimes I really don’t understand you. If the Yin-Yang Ghost Path is closed, then let it be. Why go through the trouble of opening it? There are plenty of vengeful spirits in this world; they can't harm you anyway. Li Guang, when did you start talking so much nonsense?
After I said this, Li Guang fell silent.
I continued, "If there's nothing else, I’ll be on my way." Just as I took a few steps, Li Guang called out to me, saying someone wanted to see me. I knew that old fellow must have his own agenda. "Who is it?" I asked.
Before long, a young man approached.
He coughed a few times and asked, "Do you remember me?"
As he walked closer under the night sky, his appearance became clearer. I quickly blurted out the name Longting. I was puzzled; why was Longting appearing now? Back then, he had pretended to be dead by the roadside, and I thought he was truly dead.
Moreover, he had saved me back in Zhang Family Village. Longting grinned and said, "Chen Fei, I didn’t expect you to remember me."
I replied with a simple "Yeah," and added after a pause, "Was it Li Guang who sent you to save me back then?" Longting said, "Pretty much. It was the master who told me to save you. But we also made a deal back then."
"What kind of deal?" I asked.
"It was that if I saved you, I could follow you into the Yin-Yang Ghost Path."
I paused for a moment, thinking about what kind of deal that was. Was the Yin-Yang Ghost Path really such a desirable place that people were fighting to get in?
I glanced at Li Guang and thought about how he had just mentioned wanting to kill a bunch of people. Could it be that he deceived Longting into thinking there was some benefit in going to the Yin-Yang Ghost Path? Unaware of the truth, Longting agreed. After a moment of silence, I directly asked Li Guang, "What do you think?"
Li Guang shrugged and said, "I have no opinion; if he wants to go, let him go. After all, they’re all people who don’t value their lives."
I asked Longting, "Do you know the consequences of entering the Yin-Yang Ghost Path?"
Longting replied, "Of course I do. Losing means death, and winning might even lead to titles and territories." He was quite open about it; when the Underworld changes hands, they would definitely need a large number of Ghost Messengers.
I said, "I'm just opening the Yin-Yang Ghost Path; I won't be doing anything to the Underworld."
Li Guang coughed a few times and said, "Chen Fei, it’s not up to you. Even if the Yin-Yang Ghost Path is opened, if there are no people from our side stationed in the Underworld, then it could easily be closed again."
Li Guang's words silenced me. Li Guang and Chen Fei—some things are not that simple. Just because a road is opened doesn't mean it will stay open; we must occupy it. It's like a toll road: if it's my road, I get to decide how it's used, ensuring its longevity.
Li Guang made a valid point.
This road must be under our control; otherwise, the power to speak will always lie with others.
Li Guang and Chen Fei seemed not to have thought this through. Until they do, they shouldn't rush in; otherwise, it could be a one-way trip.
I nodded in agreement.
Longting said, "Chen Fei, what's there to hesitate about? Those people are disrupting the balance of Yin and Yang; the Underworld should have changed hands long ago."
"Exactly! It should have changed long ago!" someone chimed in.
I looked up at the speaker and saw Du Feng approaching. Two spirits followed him closely; they were barely visible behind him—ordinary people certainly wouldn't see them. Du Feng was a Ghost Pharmacist. He said, "Chen Fei, you must have seen the spirits in my home. I initially didn't choose this path, but there were too many wronged souls. I had no choice but to take them in. These two behind me are also souls I've taken in; I have many more like them at home."
Now I understood that there was a larger game being played behind the scenes—one that Li Guang was orchestrating.
But it seemed he was playing it well; perhaps I had underestimated the situation.
Li Guang asked, "Chen Fei, what have you decided?"
I took a deep breath and said, "Hmm."
"Then does that mean you agree?" Li Guang asked.
"I suppose so!"
At that moment, I couldn't help but take another look at Li Guang. The old guy wasn't participating, yet he had orchestrated such a grand scheme. It struck me with an inexplicable sense of fear. Longting, upon hearing my agreement, seemed excited and said, "Chen Fei, it looks like I didn't save the wrong person after all."
Du Feng chimed in, "Neither did I."
I responded with a simple "Hmm," suggesting that for now, things would remain as they were and that everyone should disperse.
After saying that, I walked ahead. As I moved, I felt three pairs of eyes fixed on me from behind. I didn't turn around; even though their words made sense, it felt like they contradicted my original intentions.
I wondered what Jiang Changsheng was thinking.
And had they learned anything new from meeting Jiang Changsheng tonight?
