Living Funeral
As I murmured, Gao Ling's soul seemed to respond, beginning to break free from its body and move forward. I continued to guide Gao Ling's soul, not daring to relax for even a moment. I was so tense that cold sweat was about to break out on my forehead.
I didn't dare to take deep breaths; I focused intently on guiding Gao Ling's soul.
Time passed second by second, with Gao Ling moving forward, while Father of Gao Ling watched expectantly, and Nian Chen stared intently in this direction.
The atmosphere became incredibly tense. Finally, I successfully drew out Gao Ling's soul. The moment Gao Ling's soul separated, Gao Yao quickly reacted and immediately guided Gao Ling's soul into Li Qiang's body.
However, the situation here was still unresolved. I hadn't picked up the Yin Yang Flag yet. I tried to determine the position of the dead person within Gao Ling's body. I examined from top to bottom but couldn't pinpoint the location. However, it was clear that the dead person was still inside Gao Ling.
I took a deep breath, but just then, a fierce wind blew in, and a flash of lightning appeared, disappearing in an instant.
Next, a powerful aura surged out from within Gao Ling's body, causing the Yin Yang Flag to be knocked backward. My body was also pushed back, and then I saw a spirit emerge from Gao Ling's body. I rushed forward.
At that moment, Nian Chen also stepped forward, but I stopped him, warning him not to act recklessly.
The spirit emerging from Gao Ling's body was undoubtedly the dead person mentioned by Li Guang. However, this spirit didn't appear to be a complete one; it looked much more saturated than other spirits. I gasped in surprise but couldn't clearly see its appearance.
It emitted a ghostly blue light, but its face seemed shrouded in a layer of black mist.
I said, "You finally came out."
It snorted coldly and replied, "You're ruining my plans."
I responded, "You must have gotten what you wanted! Otherwise, you wouldn't be able to resurrect."
It retorted, "You’re meddling too much!" With that, it dashed toward me at lightning speed and kicked me squarely in the chest. I flew backward but managed to stabilize myself quickly without falling down.
A Bagua appeared before me, radiating black and white light, swirling in the darkness of the night.
The Bagua quickly advanced towards the corpse, forcing it to retreat. Grabbing the Yin Yang Flag, I pursued without giving it a moment to breathe. As I caught up, a Bagua Diagram emerged in my palm, ready to suppress once more.
It let out a furious roar and said, "Are you trying to force me?"
I ignored it and continued my suppression. At that moment, its soul began to waver, showing signs of collapse. However, it refused to give in and continued to fight back. After exchanging over a dozen blows, we reached a stalemate.
It attempted to retreat, but I pressed on. I threw the Yin Yang Flag into the air, where it solidified and blocked its path.
It had no choice but to halt. I declared that today I would slay it.
"Just based on you?" it scoffed.
Another Bagua Diagram formed in my palm. With my Yin Yang constitution, controlling the Bagua Diagram was no challenge at all.
The Bagua Diagrams formed and dissipated in succession until finally, I struck directly at its chest. Its soul instantly shattered but quickly reformed. The situation changed rapidly; the Yin Yang Flag stood firm in the air, swaying gently in the breeze.
It cursed, surprised that it encountered me right after emerging.
I knew it had not fully recovered yet, but I couldn't let it escape. If I did, it would surely become a formidable obstacle on the Yin Yang path later.
I pressed forward; today, I had no intention of letting it go. As I closed in, it began to resist.
I pulled out the Hundred Ghosts Diagram. Previously, I hadn't been able to unleash its full power due to my lack of cultivation. But now that I had gained some skill, the Hundred Ghosts Diagram's function was vastly different. I aimed to use it to suppress the creature.
The Hundred Ghosts Diagram quickly immobilized its form. Seeing this brought me a sense of joy as I charged forward and called out for Gao Yao to hand me the wooden sword. Without hesitation, Gao Yao quickly passed it to me.
I swiftly smeared my blood on the wooden sword, which erupted with a burst of red light. As the crimson glow flashed, I lunged toward its chest with the sword.
At that moment, he began to show signs of panic and said, "No, you will regret this."
I ignored his words, watching as the sword in my hand was about to touch his chest. But in the next second, the Hundred Ghosts Diagram was torn apart, and he escaped. However, he paid a price for it; his soul became increasingly weak.
My wooden sword struck nothing but air, yet I had no intention of letting him go easily, so I continued to close the distance. But things would not proceed so smoothly. Soon, a rift appeared in the air. Just before he entered, he shouted at me, "Chen Fei, on the Yin-Yang Ghost Path, we will not rest until one of us is dead."
As soon as he finished speaking, the path closed behind him.
He escaped, but he was severely injured. After he left, I felt a surge of anger and spat out blood.
But I could no longer catch up to him. Nian Chen stepped forward at that moment and asked with concern, "Are you okay?"
I replied, "I'm fine."
Nian Chen said, "You're bleeding; how can you be fine?" He reached out to wipe the blood from the corner of my mouth. I lamented that I had let him escape.
Nian Chen reassured me, "Let him go; as long as you're okay."
I stared in the direction where he had vanished, feeling a mix of unwillingness and unease growing within me. I sighed when I suddenly heard Gao Qing ask, "Brother, what's wrong?"
I quickly turned around. Gao Ling's soul had already attached itself to Li Qiang's body and had awakened. However, Gao Ling was continuously spitting blood and looked extremely pale.
Was it because the compatibility between body and soul wasn't sufficient?
I felt uncertain and anxious. At that moment, the Gao family began to show their true emotions. It turned out they were not heartless; they just wanted Gao Ling to live better. Gao Ling's mother was so anxious that she was on the verge of tears.
Gao Ling opened his eyes but couldn't help spitting out more blood.
He called out to his mother, "Why are you crying?"
Gao Ling's breath was extremely weak, as if he might pass away at any moment. I called out his name; it seemed like he was on the brink of death. This time, the name change seemed to have failed.
"Gao Qing" called out to her brother "Gao Ling."
"Gao Ling" smiled and said, "Are you being sincere this time, Gao Qing?"
"Gao Qing" replied, "Brother, I've always been sincere."
"Gao Yao" also spoke with emotion, "Ling'er, you've really been wronged these years. Dad was useless; in the end, he couldn't save you."
At that moment, "Gao Ling" said, "Dad, you all have tried very hard. Thank you." His voice was intermittent, as if he were on the verge of death. I grasped "Gao Ling's" wrist to check his pulse. He looked at me and asked, "Fei, am I going to die?"
I assured him, "You won't die. Don't worry."
"Fei, I know my own condition. Even if I don't exchange my life this time, I won't live long. I understand it clearly in my heart."
"Gao Ling's" mood was somewhat sorrowful. I said to him, "What nonsense are you talking? I will save you."
Upon hearing this, "Gao Qing" asked, "Chen Fei, do you have a way?"
I was at a loss for words; deep down, I felt uncertain. I didn't know what to do, but I absolutely wouldn't watch as "Gao Ling" died before my eyes. He couldn't die. I thought about this as I saw the weakness of "Gao Ling's" soul; it had reached a critical point.
His soul was in a state of imminent collapse, and slowly blue light particles began to emerge from his body.
His clothes were already stained red with blood. My face turned pale as I urged "Gao Ling," "You have to hold on! Hold on!" I tried to use my own spiritual energy to stabilize his soul, but it was utterly impossible.
I became increasingly anxious as I watched my brother on the brink of death.
"Gao Qing" asked urgently, "Chen Fei, do you really have no way?"
"Gao Yao" said, "Gao Qing, don't pressure him. Ling'er probably has no hope left."
Upon hearing this, Gao Ling's parents collapsed to the ground. Gao Qing hurriedly supported her mother, while Nian Chen advised me, "Fei, don't panic."
I turned to Gao Ling and said, "Hang in there; there must be a way."
I began calling out Li Guang's name, frantically shouting for him. At this moment, only Li Guang could save Gao Ling. After all, he knew that there was a dead person inside Gao Ling's body, so he must have some way to help.
I felt like I was losing my mind as I continued to call out for Li Guang.
I suspected that the old bastard was watching from the sidelines. As I kept shouting, Gao Ling said, "Fei, you don't need to call anymore. I know my own fate. Who in this world can escape death? Birth, aging, sickness, and death are natural laws of life. There's no need to force it."
"But..." I replied.
"But what?" Gao Ling asked.
"But we're good brothers! I can't just give up your life like this."
If it weren't for Gao Ling's help along the way, my journey would have been far more difficult. Now that he was on the brink of death, I certainly couldn't give up easily.
I continued shouting for Li Guang. If that old guy didn't show up, I'd start cursing. Gao Qing asked me, "Chen Fei, what are you shouting about? The person you're calling can save my brother, right?"
"Maybe," I replied with a nod.
After hearing this, Gao Qing joined in my calls, and soon Nian Chen was shouting as well. I called out to Li Guang, "If you don't help me this time, I won't care about your affairs in the future."
Suddenly, Gao Ling called my name. I rushed over to him as he shouted for his parents. Everyone gathered around as Gao Ling said, "I'm about to die now. I have a few things to settle. Don't be sad for me. Also, my bank card password is..."
That damn Gao Ling still had the presence of mind for these matters.
He continued, "Fei, my good brother, split the money in my bank account—half for you and half for my parents' retirement. Make sure there's enough saved up."
I: ...
I never expected Gao Ling to still be thinking of me at this moment, even offering me his savings. When we were together, he worked so hard to make money, risking his life multiple times. Now, he was willing to share half of the money he earned with his life.
I took a deep breath, feeling my eyes welling up, but I held back the tears. I said to Gao Ling, "Spend your money on yourself. Just don’t die."
Gao Ling repeated his earlier words, "No need to force it."
After saying that, he coughed up blood again, and it splattered across his face. His entire face was already stained red with blood. In the end, Gao Ling closed his eyes, and I could see his spirit fading away more rapidly.
The blue light spots began to drift away into the distance. I reached out to grab them, but the light slipped through my fingers like sand; I couldn't hold on to them at all.
Gao Ling's mother started to wail loudly, repeatedly calling out for Ling'er.
Gao Yao's face also showed a look of sorrow, though he didn't cry like Gao Ling did. Was he gone? I placed my hand near Gao Ling's nose and realized he truly had no breath left—he was dead. It felt as if he was really gone.
Was Gao Ling really dead? I felt a wave of sadness wash over me.
Gao Qing also began to cry, but it was too late; Gao Ling's weak spirit seemed unable to gather itself anymore.
