Living Funeral
He said, "You finally woke up."
As soon as he finished speaking, I heard the sound of footsteps on the wooden floor.
Hu Qingming quickly called out to Xiao Tongwen, who suddenly burst into laughter and said, "I've waited for you all for a hundred years; you finally returned."
Zhang Xun's expression remained completely calm, showing no change at Xiao Tongwen's appearance. After all, Zhang Xun had also been asleep for a century.
During this hundred years, Zhang Xun and the others were unaware of what had happened. It seemed that Zhang Xun had blanked out some memories; otherwise, he wouldn't have forgotten who Hu Qingming was. However, Zhang Xun didn't seem to care much about it. Before long, I saw Xiao Tongwen approaching.
He looked just like before, though he seemed to have gained quite a bit of weight. He said, "I’ve been waiting for you all for so long!"
Hu Qingming replied, "Aren't we here now?"
As Xiao Tongwen got closer, he suddenly exclaimed, "Where's Changsheng?"
Hu Qingming said, "Changsheng might still be busy with something."
Seeing these old acquaintances filled me with countless emotions, but I wasn't here just to reunite with them; I was here to complete unfinished business.
Hu Qingming asked, "Tongwen, did you write the words on the wooden pieces downstairs?"
Xiao Tongwen replied, "Yes, I wrote them to keep people from coming up and to scare them off."
"You really have your ways! Was it that simple?" Hu Qingming asked.
Xiao Tongwen said, "What lies can I tell you? We can't meet for the first time in a hundred years and start with falsehoods. But Chen Fei, you brought me here, and it's been a hundred years! I hope this century won't be in vain. If we enter the Yin-Yang Ghost Path this time, I hope we can make it to the end."
I replied, "We will."
Nian Chen curiously asked, "How could you have stayed here for a hundred years? Isn't this just a lake? Didn't you drown?"
Xiao Tongwen responded, "I had the same question as you at first, but later I learned that the water could never reach this tower. By the way, don't ask me why; you'll have to ask Chen Fei about that."
I added, "I don't know either. When I discovered this tower back then, it was just like this."
"That's really strange!" Nian Chen remarked.
Zhang Xun stood silently to the side, deep in thought. Upon seeing Zhang Xun, Xiao Tongwen spoke up again, "You survived too! Your fellow disciples have plotted to a terrifying extent. What about that fat guy?" Xiao Tongwen asked familiarly.
Zhang Xun replied, "The fat guy is dead."
Xiao Tongwen's expression froze for a moment before asking, "So he really is dead?"
Zhang Xun confirmed, "Yes, he is."
I added, "He died trying to save me." Xiao Tongwen fell silent, no longer expressing regret. I vowed that his death would not be in vain.
Zhang Xun said, "I hope so."
I turned to Xiao Tongwen and said, "Get ready; we’ll head out tonight."
"What?!" Xiao Tongwen exclaimed, surprised. "You really can't go up there. I've been in this tower for a hundred years, and I've explored every other part many times, but I've only been up there once, and I almost died."
As Xiao Tongwen spoke, there was a hint of fear in his tone. It seemed he was genuinely scared.
I replied to Xiao Tongwen, "I've been to this tower too, and I came here before you, so I know there are good things inside."
"What good things?" Xiao Tongwen asked.
"You'll find out when you go," I said.
Zhang Xun suddenly sighed. "At this point, I've completed my final mission. I feel like I've lived too exhaustively!" Zhang Xun remarked.
I turned to look at Zhang Xun and said, "If it weren't for you, I wouldn't have made it this far. Thank you."
Zhang Xun replied, "This was destined to happen long ago. Besides, I didn't handle the situation in West San Village well, which almost cost you your life." I assured Zhang Xun, "That doesn't matter. Don't worry; in the end, I'll repay you."
Zhang Xun said, "We're already this far; what’s there to talk about repayment?"
I wasn't sure what would happen next, but I knew that everything would eventually come to light.
"Let's go, Chen Fei," Zhang Xun said.
I nodded and replied, "Let's go."
Xiao Tongwen remarked, "Are we really going? We're already heading up." With no choice left, Xiao Tongwen steeled himself and followed us upward.
We walked towards it, but the wooden staircase was only half complete. As Xiao Tongwen ascended the stairs, he remarked to me that he had always been curious why there were stairs leading to the top. When I stepped forward, I discovered a door. Upon opening it, I nearly met my end.
"Is it really that eerie?" Hu Qingming asked.
"Why would I lie to you?" Xiao Tongwen replied. "You'll find out soon enough." We finished climbing the half staircase in about a minute, and sure enough, we reached the end where a door awaited us.
The door was painted red, and the paint looked fresh. I suggested to Xiao Tongwen that he should open it. "Are you sure we should?" he asked.
"What's the point of coming up here if we don't open the door?" I countered.
"Then let's all be cautious," he said. Everyone nodded in agreement, and with a creak, the door swung open. A gust of wind rushed in, and outside was pitch black. "Is this a way outside?" Hu Qingming inquired.
"No," Xiao Tongwen replied. "I thought so too at first. Just shine your flashlight on it, and you'll see." Hu Qingming turned on his flashlight, illuminating the area instantly.
What lay before us shocked Hu Qingming to an unimaginable extent, and I was taken aback as well. Someone had once told me that there were treasures hidden here for me, waiting for the right moment to be claimed. Now seemed like the perfect time; if I didn't act now, I might never have another chance. I hadn't taken anything before, but this time there shouldn't be any issues.
"What exactly is this place?" Zhang Xun asked.
"I don't know," Xiao Tongwen admitted. "All I know is that it's very eerie here. Who would have thought opening this door would lead to such a place?"
He continued, "It's like there's an entire space hidden behind this door. When I first opened it, my reaction was just like yours. But I've only been here once since."
After a moment of silence, I said, "Let's go inside."
I was the first to step through, my feet landing firmly on the ground. Nian Chen remarked how strange it was that such a high place could lead to another realm entirely. All five of us entered, and at that moment, a cool breeze swept through.
"Too real!" Zhang Xun said.
I replied to Zhang Xun, "It's real after all. Let's go, everyone be careful." Xiao Tongwen had been here before and, having suffered a loss, was more nervous than the rest of us.
However, I felt reassured. We had been walking for quite a while; everything around us was dark, yet there were trees and mountains, making everything feel particularly real. This place was like a world, a true world. I just didn't know who had created it.
Knowing our destination allowed me to walk without any hesitation.
Xiao Tongwen asked, "Chen Fei, what’s in here?"
I replied, "You'll find out when we get there."
Zhang Xun and Nian Chen stayed close by my side, while Hu Qingming spoke less than before. We continued forward, the scenery around us changing as Xiao Tongwen cautiously walked behind me.
Not long after, a figure suddenly appeared. She spoke up, "Why are you here again?"
Xiao Tongwen immediately tensed up and said, "Chen Fei, it's her! She's a dangerous person; she almost got me killed last time."
As soon as those words fell, Nian Chen, who had been somewhat frightened, suddenly looked delighted. She exclaimed, "Sister! Ling Yu, is that you?"
Ling Yu stepped out from the shadows with her hands behind her back. "Feng Li girl, it's been a while," she said.
Nian Chen responded, "Sister, I've missed you! But I've changed my name; I'm now called Nian Chen."
"I see," Ling Yu replied.
Xiao Tongwen said, "So you know each other!" He was quite surprised.
"Fatty Zhang, you've gotten bold!" Ling Yu scolded Xiao Tongwen. Xiao Tongwen replied to Ling Yu, "Since you know each other, why did you try to kill me back then?"
Ling Yu said, "I didn't know you were acquainted with Chen Fei at that time!"
Who would have thought that after a hundred years, such a misunderstanding would arise? I turned to Chen Fei and asked, "Can I take that thing now?"
Ling Yu replied, "Not necessarily; you can give it a try."
I felt good.
Hu Qingming glanced at Ling Yu and asked, "Is it the Ghost Messenger?"
Ling Yu answered, "It was a hundred years ago, but it's not entirely the same now."
"What do you mean?" Hu Qingming inquired.
Nian Chen said, "Sister Ling Yu is an undercover agent now."
In an instant, Ling Yu smiled in silence and after a moment said, "That's pretty much the idea."
I suddenly said, "I think I understand why you were next to that star that belonged to me back then."
Ling Yu asked, "Why?"
I said, "Because you are an undercover agent."
Ling Yu fell silent for a moment and replied, "That's about the gist of it." At that moment, Zhang Xun couldn't help but ask, "What kind of place is this?"
Ling Yu answered, "Amitabha Realm, a very strange place, one that an ordinary person could never enter." Confusion washed over Zhang Xun's face, but he chose not to press further; some things, even if asked, might not be understood by the answers given.
After walking a few steps, Ling Yu said, "Actually, I have a big question in my heart. Logically speaking, you shouldn't have been killed by the man in white. How did you end up dead?"
I was taken aback for a moment and then replied to Ling Yu, "It's all fate. If I hadn't died, many things would never have been accomplished."
Xiao Tongwen chimed in, "I’m curious too. With your cultivation level, Chen Fei, even Yin Chai shouldn't have been able to take you down. Yet you still ended up dead."
Hu Qingming looked at me with confusion as well. I told them, "You'll understand in the future."
Nian Chen added, "Fei must have his reasons for doing this."
I nodded. Ling Yu remarked, "You think too much."
I replied, "Fortunately, I don't think too much; otherwise, I wouldn't have made it this far. Honestly, I never intended to survive, but my junior brother wouldn't let me die. I had no choice."
"What's Longsheng doing now?" Xiao Tongwen asked.
Zhang Xun responded, "I've seen him; he's doing well." As we continued walking, we finally arrived in front of a house. After seeing it, everyone was stunned. Xiao Tongwen was the first to speak up, "Isn't this your old lair?"
I replied, "No."
"Xiao Tongwen said, how could it not be? It's clearly exactly the same!
Hu Qingming replied, it shouldn't be, Chen Fei. The original West San Village must have been modeled after this place!
I nodded, not denying it. The Mountain Lodge outside, which is West San Village, was indeed modeled after this place. This building conceals some profound principles; the balance of Yin and Yang has reached an extreme point. I had never seen such harmony between Yin and Yang before. That's why I later built an identical structure.
However, I made some modifications by adding a Bagua in the middle of the building, which allowed me to open the Yin-Yang Ghost Path.
Ling Yu remarked, you are really clever.
Hu Qingming added, your approach is indeed effective. The balance of Yin and Yang in this building has truly reached an extreme point. After achieving that balance, opening the Yin-Yang Ghost Path wouldn't be obstructed. I just didn't expect there would be such a place below.
Xiao Tongwen asked, Qingming, what are you talking about? I didn't understand a single word.
Hu Qingming replied, what I said isn't important.
Xiao Tongwen: …
I turned to Ling Yu and asked, "Can we go in?"
Ling Yu responded with a sound of agreement and said, yes, we can go in."
