Living Funeral
At this moment, I, Jiang Changsheng, felt somewhat surprised, perhaps not expecting Chen Fei to be like this.
I stood to the side, watching another version of myself from a different timeline. Had it really come to this? Borrowing a soul to extend life—whose soul would it be? The Chen Fei on the bed looked as if he was on the brink of death. Chen Fei said to me, "Changsheng, you know my matters are not yet resolved."
I nodded but paused before saying, "But this is a forbidden path. Master would definitely disapprove."
"I know," Chen Fei replied.
His voice grew low, and I couldn't tell if it was due to his lack of breath or if he suddenly felt despondent. Standing beside him, I was not in this body, so I had no idea what he was thinking.
"Senior Brother, do you still intend to go through with it?" I asked.
"That's precisely why I'm going to do it; I will bear the consequences," Chen Fei said.
Hu Qingming remained silent, but Xiao Tongwen couldn't help but interject, "If borrowing a soul can grant life, why not borrow one?"
"Senior Brother, there may not be a soul that resonates with you," I replied.
It seemed I was reluctant for Chen Fei to rely on a borrowed soul to continue living.
As an observer, I wondered if this was the reason for the falling out between me and Jiang Changsheng back then! Xiao Tongwen asked, "If not that, how can one live?"
Hu Qingming also showed a puzzled expression but quickly understood. He said, "Then we must borrow more souls."
"Borrow more souls?" Xiao Tongwen asked in confusion.
However, after Xiao Tongwen spoke, no one answered. The atmosphere turned quiet; no one uttered a word. Jiang Changsheng remained silent, seemingly deep in thought. Chen Fei lay on the bed and said, "Just listen to me, Changsheng."
"But Brother, if that's the case, you might die forever."
"Who can escape death?" Chen Fei replied.
Jiang Changsheng seemed reluctant. "But if I die, won't you still be here?" Chen Fei said. "I’m counting on you this time."
"Just listen to him!" Hu Qingming urged.
"Brother, I've divided the Book of Ten Thousand Ghosts into forty-nine parts. I'll leave the main part for you, is that alright?" Jiang Changsheng proposed.
"Alright," Chen Fei agreed.
Xiao Tongwen interjected, "As long as Chen Fei doesn't die, the Book of Ten Thousand Ghosts will still have its purpose. Why divide it into forty-nine parts?"
"For life!" Jiang Changsheng simply stated.
Xiao Tongwen repeated, "For life!" Then Jiang Changsheng hurriedly left the room. Xiao Tongwen and Hu Qingming followed suit, leaving only Chen Fei and me in the room. I looked at Chen Fei, and he looked back at me.
But I knew he wasn't really seeing me; his gaze was elsewhere. He lay there with a hint of sorrow in his eyes.
Chen Fei, what are you really thinking? Can you tell me? I wondered silently. But I knew he couldn't tell me anything. I stepped outside to see what Jiang Changsheng would do next. After leaving, I saw Chen Fei instructing someone to fetch a graphite board.
"What about the main part?" Hu Qingming asked.
"We don’t need to worry about the main part; my brother will handle it himself," Jiang Changsheng replied.
"He'll handle it himself? How can he do that in his condition?" Xiao Tongwen questioned.
"Do you believe my brother has been prepared for this all along?" After those words were spoken, both Hu Qingming and Xiao Tongwen showed expressions of confusion. Xiao Tongwen wondered aloud, "Has Chen Fei really calculated everything to this extent? Does he know he will die?"
I really can't believe it.
No wonder later on, Hu Qingming would only have forty-eight paths in the Book of Ten Thousand Ghosts, with one path known only to Chen Fei. It turns out there was a reason for all this! But where is that last path?
As Jiang Changsheng was writing the Book of Ten Thousand Ghosts on the slate, Hu Qingming and Xiao Wentong were present. After some time spent on it, Hu Qingming asked, "Is this okay?" There was a hint of worry in his tone.
Jiang Changsheng replied, "Let's trust my senior brother!"
By this time, it had already turned dark, and Wu Luo and the others quickly brought food. However, Jiang Changsheng and the others had no appetite at all.
I was also very curious about when I had prepared the Forty-Ninth Ghost Script. I entered the room to look at myself, but Chen Fei on the bed looked like he was on the verge of death. How had I managed to survive in such a state?
What exactly had I gone through?
At this moment, my mind was blank; I had no memories at all. If only I could talk to him, but that was impossible.
Jiang Changsheng came in from outside and said, "Senior brother is ready."
Chen Fei acknowledged with a sound, indicating he understood. Then he said, "Go ahead."
Jiang Changsheng nodded and asked, "Senior brother, are you really sure about this?"
"Changsheng, go," Chen Fei replied, his tone weary. After they left, I followed them out. Jiang Changsheng did not immediately carry out Chen Fei's instructions but instead called Zhang Xun and the others over.
Zhang Xun, Li Qiang, and the chubby Zhang all looked somewhat immature at that moment.
Jiang Changsheng said, "The plan I set up earlier may need to be moved forward."
Chubby Zhang exclaimed, "No way! Am I going to die so soon? I haven't lived enough yet!"
"Shut up!" Zhang Xun said to Zhang Cheng. Zhang Cheng replied, "Am I not allowed to say a few words even when I'm dying?" Xiao Tongwen looked at Zhang Cheng and laughed, saying, "You still have a bit of my former flair."
Zhang Cheng retorted, "I'm not afraid of dying."
I knew better than anyone that Zhang Cheng was not afraid of death; back in Dead Man's Cave, he had faced death without batting an eye.
Suddenly, I felt a pang of sadness. So many people were preparing for life and death for one person, but was I really that important back then?
Hu Qingming asked, "Changsheng, do we need to discuss this plan with Chen Fei?"
At that moment, a resolute expression appeared on Jiang Changsheng's face as he slowly uttered two words: "No."
Hu Qingming replied, then it won't be.
After a moment of silence, Jiang Changsheng called out, "Zhang Xun, Li Qiang, Zhang Cheng, are you ready?"
It was only then that I realized Zhang Cheng's full name was indeed Zhang Cheng. I would forever remember this name.
Zhang Xun spoke first, "I already knew the outcome."
Li Qiang nodded in agreement while Zhang Cheng grumbled a bit. Jiang Changsheng shot a glare at Zhang Cheng, who immediately fell silent. Jiang Changsheng instructed, "You all go down and prepare." After he said this, the three of them went down in turn to get ready.
Xiao Tongwen remarked, "What a pity; they were all good seedlings for cultivation."
Jiang Changsheng replied, "There's nothing to regret."
Xiao Tongwen continued, "Anyway, no one can surpass you."
Jiang Changsheng said, "Let's get started. Place the Forty-Eight Paths of Ten Thousand Ghosts in the forty-eight positions; the locations will be chosen by me."
Hu Qingming said, "Was the Mountain Lodge set up in both Yin and Yang for this moment? To gather Yin and Yang and then borrow souls, right? If I'm correct, then Chen Fei is quite terrifying."
Jiang Changsheng replied, "My senior brother is always meticulous; he has thought of all the escape routes."
Xiao Tongwen chimed in, "You still call him your senior brother? You're no different. You've arranged everything for after his death. If you weren't brothers, it would be downright creepy. Luckily, I'm friends with you; otherwise, if I were your enemy, the outcome would surely be grim."
Jiang Changsheng smiled slightly, a hint of confidence shining through. Xiao Tongwen was right; these brothers truly had every detail calculated. Yet even so, they still faced failure later on.
After positioning the Forty-Eight Paths of Ten Thousand Ghosts, Jiang Changsheng began to summon souls. He held a yellow Banner that fluttered in the air as he murmured incantations.
Hu Qingming and Xiao Tongwen stood by, and soon the Forty-Eight Paths of Ten Thousand Ghosts seemed to respond to an unseen force, emanating a faint black light. Before long, I felt the Yin Qi and Yang Qi converging here. At that moment, Hu Qingming softly murmured, "It really is like this."
"Impressive!" Xiao Tongwen exclaimed.
"They're coming!" Xiao Tongwen announced.
I looked up and indeed saw many blue orbs descending towards us. They first landed on the Forty-Eight Paths of Ten Thousand Ghosts. Finally, Jiang Changsheng said, "My senior brother is in trouble today; I hope everyone can lend a hand."
As soon as he finished speaking, these souls emitted a wailing sound and began to descend into the room. I quickly followed them inside.
I saw Chen Fei—myself—sitting cross-legged as souls continuously fell onto him, slowly being absorbed. The once lifeless Chen Fei suddenly gained a hint of color on his face.
As more and more souls gathered, Chen Fei seemed to grow stronger. I was curious about what I had intended to do back then. This situation continued for about a quarter of an hour when Jiang Changsheng knocked on the door from outside and called out, "Senior brother, are you ready?"
Chen Fei was finally able to rise from the bed. Although he still appeared somewhat weak, he looked much better than before.
"Is it time now?"
Chen Fei replied, "It's now."
"What about the Soul Seal?" Chen Fei asked.
I was curious about what this Soul Seal was. Jiang Changsheng replied, "Senior Brother, can't you just take a proper rest?"
Chen Fei said, "Even so, my lifespan is limited. We should hurry while I'm still alive."
"Is this place suitable?" Jiang Changsheng asked again.
"It is. The Yin and Yang sides align perfectly in the form of the Bagua, just right for accessing the Yin-Yang Ghost Path. It's in that building behind us," Chen Fei turned to look, and there was indeed a building behind him. However, when I later went to the Mountain Lodge, I didn't see that building.
Xiao Tongwen said, "That's great! Since you're all prepared, we just need to follow you up."
At that moment, Chen Fei replied, "You don't need to go up with me!"
"No way! Senior Brother," Jiang Changsheng insisted.
"What about the Soul Seal?"
