Living Funeral
Xiao Tongwen smiled and said, "I can't do anything here! I'm just following your lead."
Jiang Changsheng didn't respond, and Xiao Tongwen walked closer to me, asking, "Chen Fei, who is the boss here? Are you the boss or is he?"
I replied to Xiao Tongwen, "It doesn't matter who the boss is."
After I said that, Xiao Tongwen paused and remarked, "You all are just the same!"
Hu Qingming interjected, "Stop wasting time, let's go inside."
The courtyard was so large; where were we supposed to go? However, as I moved forward, I felt something stirring within me, as if memories were resurfacing. Why were we here? What were we doing? At that moment, Hu Qingming walked up beside me and said, "You really seem out of it."
I glanced at Hu Qingming and asked, "What are we supposed to do now?"
Hu Qingming replied, "Retrieve your own things!"
My own things... Hu Qingming nodded. When a door was pushed open, I saw a coffin. Hu Qingming ran to another room and opened another door; it was also a coffin. Jiang Changsheng and Xiao Tongwen scattered as well, discovering coffins behind each door they opened.
When I opened my door, I naturally found a coffin too. Was I here to find these coffins? At that moment, Xiao Tongwen called out to me, "Chen Fei, come over here quickly."
After Xiao Tongwen spoke, I walked over. He pointed at one of the coffins and said, "Look at this coffin."
I asked, "What's wrong with this coffin?"
Xiao Tongwen said, "You really didn't notice? No way! Chen Fei, are you stupid? Did someone hit you?"
I was at a loss for words...
I genuinely didn't know; I was just being honest. Xiao Tongwen continued, "There's a Zombie in here, can't you see that?"
How could I possibly know? The coffin wasn't even opened. Even if it were, I might not be able to tell it was a Zombie. Xiao Tongwen remarked, "It seems you're really clueless. This is an Evil Position; how could you not realize that?"
I echoed the term in my mind: Evil Position.
I replied to Xiao Tongwen, "There are seven Evil Positions here, with seven Evil Positions placed in seven coffins, and the coffins guard the Evil Positions, using their usual tricks." Xiao Tongwen was quite serious about it. Then he opened the coffin and said, "I'm going to break the Evil Position. Breaking the Evil Position is simple. Look at these Three Incense Sticks in my hand; I'm going to insert them into this Zombie's mouth. Chen Fei, do you see?"
I nodded and said I did.
Xiao Tongwen declared, "Then I'll insert them!" At that moment, he seemed like he was conducting a live demonstration. I watched as he inserted the Three Incense Sticks into the Zombie's mouth and then lit them. As the Three Incense Sticks burned quickly, the Zombie sat up from the coffin.
I was startled, but Xiao Tongwen seemed unfazed. He pulled out a hammer and struck the Zombie's head hard, causing it to lie back down again. But that wasn't all; Xiao Tongwen pulled the Zombie out and then used a knife to pierce its forehead.
"Chen Fei," he asked, "do you know what I'm going to do next?"
I shook my head to indicate I didn't know. Xiao Tongwen said, "It looks like you're really clueless." In the next moment, he lit a piece of Ghost Money and tossed it into the coffin. The corpse was quickly engulfed in flames. Watching the fire blaze, Xiao Tongwen explained, "This is called exorcising evil."
Seeing my bewildered expression, Xiao Tongwen seemed to become even more excited.
Xiao Tongwen said, "Eliminating the evil is the first step. The second step, of course, is to continue moving forward. Since there are seven Evil Positions, does breaking one coffin solve everything?" He continued, "Of course not; the other two will handle it."
"You can take care of your own coffin," he added.
Seeing his determination, I replied, "Alright, I'll go with you." When we reached the coffin, I might have been a bit slow in my actions. Before I could do much, the Zombie suddenly rose from the dead. Reacting quickly, I threw a punch that smashed its head.
Xiao Tongwen was stunned and said, "You truly are Chen Fei."
At this point, two of the seven Evil Positions had been broken. Naturally, Chen Fei and Hu Qingming were also handling their tasks without any issues. Once everything was settled, I moved forward and soon came across a Bagua Diagram in the center of the courtyard, with a solitary moon hanging above.
The Bagua Diagram—was it yin and yang? However, as I looked closer, I noticed that all parts of the Bagua Diagram were black, even though they were separated in the middle.
Could it be that this Bagua Diagram was entirely yin? I approached it and squatted down to write the word "Decree" on it. Suddenly, moonlight poured down from above—a silvery light that illuminated the entire dark side of the Bagua.
Yet, despite being illuminated by moonlight, the dark side remained just that—dark. As the moonlight fell upon it, the yin and yang began to take shape.
"What are you doing?" Xiao Tongwen asked me.
I had no words to respond when a gust of wind suddenly arose. The dark side of the Bagua began to spin beneath my feet while the silver moonlight falling on me remained still. Taking a deep breath at that moment, I saw a door open in mid-air as a strong wind rushed in.
I was blown away from the dark side of the Bagua.
"I’m out!" Xiao Tongwen caught me as Hu Qingming and Jiang Changsheng approached. As time passed, the wind grew stronger and stronger; we struggled to keep our footing.
"What is this?" I asked.
"This is the Yin-Yang Ghost Path, the channel that controls our fate," Jiang Changsheng whispered in my ear.
Yin-Yang Ghost Path? It sounded so familiar. Suddenly, I remembered a figure that had appeared in my mind not long ago, reminding me of my lifelong ambition to traverse the Yin-Yang Ghost Path, to petition for the living, and to eradicate evil spirits...
I couldn't recall all the details. However, upon seeing that door, I felt a wave of malice wash over me. My heart was uneasy. Xiao Tongwen said, "I knew you could open it."
Opening the Yin-Yang Ghost Path must have been purely coincidental. I asked, "Are we going in?"
Xiao Tongwen replied, "We don't have to! I have fresh lamb at home; we could go back and enjoy a hot pot."
"Let's go in," Jiang Changsheng said.
Hu Qingming added, "Chen Fei, just go inside."
Then let's go in. Although I still felt dazed, Xiao Tongwen warned me, "Chen Fei, this is a one-way trip. You need to think carefully. If we go back, it's a gentle place. I can find you two beautiful sisters to accompany you with music and song."
I was left speechless...
Hearing those words made me feel something sinister about it—music and song indeed...
Xiao Tongwen urged me on, "Weren't you just acting foolish? Just keep pretending." As he spoke, he wrapped his arm around my shoulder. At that moment, Hu Qingming turned to me and said, "Some people shouldn't die, yet they still do. Is this the cycle of reason? Is this the law of nature?"
Hu Qingming suddenly uttered a phrase.
Xiao Wentong said, "Qingming, you haven't spoken for eighteen years. When you finally do, it's all against reason and morality!"
Hu Qingming spat and replied, "It's clear as day. The Yin-Yang Ghost Path—why should I be born to a broken family? I refuse to accept it..." At this moment, Hu Qingming's tone turned serious and earnest.
Jiang Changsheng said nothing and walked toward the Yin-Yang Ghost Path.
I stood there in a daze. Yes! Some people simply shouldn't die, or at least not in such tragic ways! I suddenly felt a pang of sorrow thinking about Zhang Pangzi's death; I still felt guilty about it. And then there was White Father—my mind was flooded with too many faces.
But just then, more information surged into my mind—one by one, the faces of those who had died before me appeared. So many people I tried to save, yet I was powerless to help them. I closed my eyes, and suddenly the image of Nian Chen surfaced in my mind.
I saw Nian Chen covered in blood, but it vanished in an instant.
Xiao Tongwen fell silent for a moment before saying, "Yeah! Hu Qingming, your words hit home. Why did my wife and son have to die so tragically?" At that moment, Xiao Tongwen seemed to be filled with youthful vigor.
"Chen Fei, are you afraid? Have you given up?"
As Xiao Tongwen spoke, he moved ahead. Seeing me still frozen in place, he said, "This isn't like you, Chen Fei." He rushed over and grabbed my hand, pulling me toward the Yin-Yang Ghost Path.
