Living Funeral
I thought to myself, is Mr. Xu out of his mind? Holding a funeral for himself while he’s still alive. Gao Ling didn’t care much about that and directly asked, “Mr. Xu, what kind of specifications do you want?”
Mr. Xu replied, “Money is not an issue; of course, I want the best specifications.”
Gao Ling smiled and said, “Alright, Mr. Xu, we will make sure it’s grand.” The two of them laughed heartily. Mr. Xu handed a cigar to Gao Ling, who lit it and took a puff, his smile becoming even brighter.
The car drove forward, with the wind rushing in through the window. Although it was summer, the early morning still felt a bit chilly.
After about an hour of driving, the car arrived at a cemetery. After getting out, Mr. Xu asked, “What do you think of this place?” Gao Ling replied, “This place is nice! The terrain is open and unobstructed; the feng shui is definitely excellent.”
Mr. Xu proudly said, “I had this cemetery checked by a master before.”
I also looked at the cemetery; the terrain was indeed open, but I didn’t see a hint of greenery—just wild grass everywhere.
Mr. Xu walked ahead while the driver followed behind. Gao Ling and I also moved forward. Mr. Xu said, “This is the spot.” I glanced back and thought it wasn’t quite right.
Mr. Xu asked, “Is there a problem?”
I replied that there were already graves here; if he wanted to set up another one in this area, it would disturb the other deceased.
Mr. Xu said, “I’ve bought up this entire area; it’s fine. Just go ahead with it. If there are any issues, just contact me.” I wanted to say more, but Mr. Xu didn’t give me a chance to speak and called out to Gao Ling to hand over the deposit. He then added, “You two take your time looking around; I’ll head back now. If you need anything, just call me.”
Gao Ling held a thick stack of cash and had completely forgotten who he was. After Mr. Xu left, it was just me and Gao Ling remaining here. I called out to Gao Ling, who snapped back to reality and said, “Fei, this guy has money; we’re going to make a big profit this time.”
I told Gao Ling, “Don’t get too excited too soon; look at this desolate place—if it were truly a feng shui treasure land, we wouldn’t be here!”
Gao Ling shrugged off my concerns and said that it didn’t matter much since this wasn’t our choice anyway; we just needed to get paid for our work. We would find someone to dig the grave and buy a coffin along with other necessary items for the deceased—just make some noise and that would be that.
Gao Ling’s approach was simple; with one sentence he wrapped everything up neatly.
There were three mounds beneath my feet. Although none had tombstones, one of them had offerings placed in front. I felt something was off. I turned to Gao Ling and asked, "Do you think there's anything strange here?"
Gao Ling replied, "Aside from the heat, nothing seems off."
Gao Ling began to gesture, indicating where the grave pit would be dug. Around ten in the morning, Mr. Xu's driver arrived to take us away. Gao Ling went to find someone to handle the arrangements while I decided to head home. I still felt uneasy about that place and planned to call Zhang Xun over to take a look.
When I got home, Bai was watching television, and both Zhang Xun and Nian Chen were there.
I called out to Zhang Xun and asked Nian Chen to stay with Bai since she was unfamiliar with the area. I briefly explained what had happened to Zhang Xun.
Zhang Xun agreed to come with us to check it out. After meeting up with Gao Ling, it seemed he had taken care of most of the arrangements. Having been in this line of work for quite some time, Gao Ling had rented several vehicles and purchased everything needed for the coffin.
Upon seeing Zhang Xun and me arrive, Gao Ling said, "Fei, we're almost ready."
By the time we transported everything to the site, it was already evening. Everyone gathered around a bonfire since Gao Ling had paid a generous fee; despite the late hour, no one wanted to leave.
Gao Ling shouted out that everyone would set up camp there for the night and suggested we start cooking.
At that moment, there were about twenty people present, looking like they were preparing for something significant. I asked Zhang Xun, "Is there any problem?"
Zhang Xun shook his head, saying he couldn't see anything wrong. However, establishing a grave on someone else's tomb was not a good sign. I was well aware of this and called out to Gao Ling. He responded that things had progressed to this point and could not be undone.
As for those unclaimed graves, I would handle them properly; I had already chosen the burial site and would simply relocate them when the time came.
Zhang Xun asked, "You've already chosen?"
Gao Ling assured him, "Don't worry; I've personally selected the burial site."
Since Gao Ling was confident about it, Zhang Xun and I felt reassured as well. At that moment, a gentle evening breeze blew in, making it feel quite refreshing.
Gao Ling shouted loudly, signaling the start of work, and everyone began to take action. However, just a moment later, a scream pierced the night, prompting us to rush over to see what had happened.
Gao Ling exclaimed, "What are you screaming about in the middle of the night?"
As we approached, everyone was stunned. Instead of a coffin in the dug-up grave, there was a door. The door was positioned horizontally, and there was a hole in it. It was an iron door, and it had been breached.
Of course, the iron door had already begun to decay, which made it easy to break through.
Gao Ling shouted into the opening, "Are you okay down there?"
The person below replied, "I hurt my leg. Hurry up and help me get out!" By this time, it was already past eight in the evening. I was curious about how such a pit had been dug; it seemed that this grave was truly not an ordinary one!
I shone my flashlight inside and took a few glances. Gao Ling instructed someone to smash the door completely. It didn't take long before the door was shattered, releasing a wave of decaying air.
"Quick, lower a rope," Gao Ling said.
Once the rope was lowered, it wasn't long before they managed to pull the injured person up. He was badly hurt, with blood on his face and legs.
Gao Ling asked, "Are you alright?"
The man replied, "I'm fine, but it looks like there's a tomb down there."
A tomb? A grave buried beneath?
He continued, "It looks like an ancient tomb. Just like what you see on TV."
"Could it really be the tomb of some emperor or general?" After Gao Ling said this, everyone gasped in surprise. They weren't fools; they understood what digging up an ancient tomb could mean—there might be many antiques down there.
"Why don't we go down and take a look?" Gao Ling suggested.
"Alright!" Someone in the crowd responded, excitement buzzing through the air. An ancient tomb! Both Zhang Xun and I were taken aback; no one had anticipated discovering a tomb here. The group quickly prepared ropes and descended into the pit.
Zhang Xun and I didn’t hesitate either. Once we reached the bottom, we found that the entire area was paved with marble, and the floor was made up of large slabs fitting together. It was clear that this tomb was grand in scale. Someone suggested, "If there’s anything valuable in this tomb, let’s keep it to ourselves."
"Don’t worry, we won’t say a word, but whatever we find should be shared among us," came the reply.
Gao Ling didn’t seem to mind much; the little money Gao Ling offered was nothing compared to the value of antiques. Once people are driven by money, they can easily lose themselves. We began walking forward into a passageway, which was about four or five meters wide and tall, giving off an impressive atmosphere.
Even the stones on the floor looked quite luxurious.
The crowd gasped in awe, speculating that this must be a royal burial site. Everyone hurried into the passageway, fearing that if they were late, they might miss out on something valuable.
At that moment, Gao Ling turned to me and Zhang Xun and urged, "Come on, let’s not just stand around! Let’s move!"
I noticed some murals on the walls of the tomb. However, after glancing at them, my expression changed. Gao Ling asked what was depicted in the murals. "I can’t make sense of it! Let’s not linger; we should hurry inside."
"What are we going in for?" I asked Gao Ling.
"To touch the antiques, of course!" Gao Ling replied eagerly.
I then pulled out a piece of slate from my backpack and examined it closely. After comparing it for a moment, I realized that the inscriptions matched perfectly. Although I didn’t understand the characters, it was clear that this place was related to the secret scrolls.
