Living Funeral
His hand gripped mine tightly, and it seemed the Dragon King had awakened. Although his voice was still quite youthful, it had become incredibly serious.
Behind us, Xiong Ao had not caught up, seemingly confident and assured in his ability to kill the Dragon King.
At that moment, Nian Chen reminded me, "Fei, the person who can save the Dragon King is at the back mountain. We need to hurry."
I nodded, my mind clouded with uncertainty, especially since a dragon-shaped cloud loomed above me. The heavy rain fell, hitting me painfully as I held onto the Dragon King and made my way in that direction.
I said to the Dragon King, "If you had told me earlier that someone could save you at the back mountain, you wouldn't have to suffer like this!"
The Dragon King grasped my hand and replied, "I thought you could save me."
I was momentarily speechless. I hadn’t succeeded in saving him. I said, "I'm really sorry!"
Suddenly, the Dragon King burst into tears, sounding quite pitiful. Hadn't he already regained his memories? Why was he crying now? I asked him, "Why are you crying?"
He replied, "Can't I cry? That old thief cut me with a knife; it hurts so much! If I don't cry, it hurts even more."
"Alright," I said as I quickened my pace toward the back mountain. The path became difficult to navigate once we entered the woods, and with the rain pouring down and darkness closing in, finding anyone was truly challenging. The term "back mountain" referred to an area that was far too vast. I asked the Dragon King, "How do we find the person who can save you?"
At that moment, I felt like a headless fly buzzing around aimlessly. Nian Chen followed closely behind us as the Dragon King urged, "Chen Fei, I don’t have much time left; you need to move faster."
I wanted to find someone too, but just moving quickly wouldn’t guarantee success! I asked the Dragon King, "What do we need to do to find this person?"
He replied, "I don’t know; all I know is that guy is hiding somewhere in this back mountain."
I wondered aloud if it was that fortune-teller. The Dragon King confirmed, "It’s that old guy." Damn it! I knew it! As I stumbled around calling out for the fortune-teller, I thought if he was indeed that powerful, he should have foreseen this!
But even if he had foreseen it, that old man still wouldn’t show himself. The Dragon King was on the verge of collapse. Time ticked away mercilessly; he could barely speak now and looked extremely pale. The dark clouds gathering above us began to dissipate slowly.
Nian Chen reminded me, "Fei, it seems the Dragon King is done for."
I knew it too. Dragon Child took a deep breath and said, "Chen Fei, stop searching."
I thought to myself, if I don't search for you, I'm dead! The Dragon King sighed, "That old fellow definitely doesn't want to save me; otherwise, he would have come out by now." He sighed again and added, "Forget it. But you, damn it, Chen Fei, why did you have to give me a name like Yang Jinjiao? Don't you know that Golden Horn is inauspicious for dragons?"
I felt embarrassed and didn't respond.
The Dragon King said, "Help me down first, Chen Fei."
We were in the woods at that moment, with rain pouring down. I set the Dragon King down, and a child no taller than a few feet stood before me. The Dragon King asked me to crouch down so we could talk. I complied, and he said to me, "Chen Fei, no matter what happens, you have done me a kindness."
I acknowledged him with a sound as he continued, "Your kindness is definitely part of that old fellow's scheme; he wants me to repay you."
I didn't quite understand at first and asked what he meant.
The Dragon King replied, "Do you believe that old fellow has already calculated my death? Xiong Ao was just a pawn in his game, but Xiong Ao really did manage to kill me."
I was speechless.
I thought to myself that the Dragon King might really be dying—what nonsense! At that moment, the expression on his face looked somewhat sorrowful. This brat had a mature look akin to an adult. After a moment of silence, the Dragon King said, "I originally wanted to borrow life and see if I could live a few more years, but now it seems impossible."
I asked, "Dragon King, have you accepted your fate?"
He replied, "This isn't acceptance of fate; damn it! That bastard! But no matter what, my initial attempt to borrow life failed miserably; I almost died. If it weren't for your blood and your Blood Talisman, I wouldn't have survived even one day. But damn it now; I'm barely alive for two days. Chen Fei, listen to me and don't interrupt."
I nodded.
The Dragon King continued, "This child is fated to be connected with me. Since I can't borrow life anymore, I can't let this child die. Although I can't live much longer now, there is still True Dragon Qi left in my body. That old fellow wants me dead because he surely wants me to leave the True Dragon Qi for you."
Upon hearing this, I felt a bit surprised. Wasn't the fortune teller supposed to save the Dragon King? Why did it seem like the Dragon King was plotting against him now?
The Dragon King said, "I don't blame him, as he has been my friend for many years. I understand his character. That being said, Chen Fei, I will give you most of my True Dragon Qi, and I will keep a little for this child’s survival. Do you have any objections?"
I replied that I had no objections. What could I say? The True Dragon Qi belonged to someone else, and he was giving it to me for free.
The Dragon King continued, "Then it's settled."
He then addressed Nian Chen, saying, "Please step aside a bit; I fear the True Dragon Qi might harm you." After hearing this, Nian Chen walked away quite a distance. The Dragon King said, "Do you see that cloud up there? That is the source of my true energy; it is about to dissipate, so we don't have much time left. Chen Fei, sit down; I will teach you a couple of mantras."
I nodded. The Dragon King briefly explained the two phrases, and I memorized them.
The Dragon King instructed, "Just keep reciting these two phrases." After saying this, he finally stopped hesitating and roared into the sky—a roar that resonated throughout the air like a thunderous clap. At that moment, another roar echoed back in response.
I felt as if I were about to explode from the intensity of it all and began to chant the mantras the Dragon King had taught me.
Within those two roars, I sensed an underlying sorrow. I kept my eyes closed as time passed by in seconds. The Dragon King said, "I have one last thing to entrust to you: avenge me."
I agreed.
After a brief pause, the Dragon King added, "There’s one more thing. If you encounter that fortune teller, please convey this message for me."
I asked, "What message?"
The Dragon King replied, "I hope he dies a miserable death."
I was speechless.
"How about that? Did you hear me?"
I said, "I heard you, and I will definitely pass the message along." I was somewhat skeptical about the fortune-telling. The Dragon King replied, "Alright, let's begin now." After he spoke, a roar echoed through the air, and soon a refreshing sensation flowed into my body.
The sound of the Dragon's Roar gently resonated in my ears, and I felt the flow of blood within me quicken.
I couldn't help but tremble all over; my head felt like it was about to burst. As the true dragon energy entered my body, my nerves gradually tightened, and pain began to fill me like air. I couldn't help but cry out.
I muttered the mental mantra, though I had no idea how long it had been. It felt as if my head was going to explode. At that moment, I opened my eyes and saw colorful lights swirling around me. Is this what True Dragon Qi looks like?
The light soon faded from within me, and the pain quickly dissipated, replaced by a cool sensation that made me feel completely refreshed.
I was drenched from the rain. The child stood there with wide eyes staring at me. I glanced up at the sky; the dark clouds were beginning to clear, slowly brightening. It was supposed to be daylight; it had turned dark because of the Dragon King's presence. Now that he had fallen, the skies were clearing.
I called out to the child, "Dragon King!" He looked at me but then suddenly burst into tears and fell to the ground. I hurriedly picked him up; although the Dragon King was dead, at least this child was safe.
I held him tightly as he continued to cry.
As the sun emerged, Nian Chen approached me and asked, "Fei, how are you doing?"
I replied that I was fine. The blood within me was still flowing rapidly.
