Living Funeral
I felt a chill run down my spine. Since the ghost was aware of our plans to deal with it, its confidence was unsettling. Clearly, it was not afraid.
The ghost said, "Even if I am, it doesn't matter. But the coffin you prepared is rather cheap; I'm worth more than that." As it spoke, the light fell on its face, revealing a dark blue hue that was disturbingly ghastly. It had bloodshot eyes—damn it, this was the true hallmark of a ghost! Compared to it, Lin Xue seemed adorably charming.
I chose not to engage with the ghost's taunt and asked, "What exactly happened between you and Zhang Xun last night?"
The ghost replied, "If you want to know, prepare a better coffin for me."
I said, "That's not an issue; you go first."
The ghost's tone darkened slightly. "That is an issue because you can't buy that coffin, but you'll see it tomorrow night."
"What do you mean?"
The ghost continued, "I heard everything you said to that person. I know he intends to take you to see something—a coffin. So here's the deal: when you go tomorrow night, just bring me along."
I looked at the ghost with suspicion as it stared back at me ominously, a smile creeping at the corners of its mouth.
Just then, someone suddenly grabbed my wrist, startling me for a few seconds. I turned around to find it was Zhang Xun.
Once Zhang Xun appeared, the ghost shifted its gaze away from me and said, "You're back. Did you see it?"
Zhang Xun remained silent, and the ghost continued, "You still don't believe? I have no reason to lie to you."
Zhang Xun calmly said, "No matter what happens, if you dare to touch him, I guarantee you won't survive tonight. Also, you better not go to that massage parlor."
The ghost replied, "I never had any interest in that place. Compared to it, I prefer being here."
Zhang Xun did not respond.
At that moment, the ghost glanced at me with a piercing gaze that sent chills down my spine. Zhang Xun still held onto my wrist tightly and said, "I don't want to repeat myself. You know what to do."
The ghost's tone suddenly became more serious. Of course, I understood; I thought it was necessary for you to know as well. This trap has ensnared you for so long—don't be so stubborn.
I then asked, "What exactly are you?"
The ghost and Zhang Xun faced off against each other. In the next second, without warning, Zhang Xun pulled out a yellow talisman and slapped it down. Just as the talisman was about to reach the ghost, it ignited spontaneously. The ghost quickly stepped back, and Zhang Xun produced several more yellow talismans and threw them.
Finally, one of the yellow talismans stuck to the ghost, who let out a scream that was mixed with laughter—a sound that was utterly chilling. Zhang Xun swiftly drew his peach wood sword and pointed it at the ghost.
Yet the ghost didn't even try to dodge; he simply said, "Do you dare?"
In fact, it turned out that Zhang Xun truly did not dare. His hand trembled around the peach wood sword, and in the end, he sheathed it and said, "You can go now."
The ghost stood up, looked at me for a moment, and then walked away. Zhang Xun looked up as if struggling with something. He stood there for quite a while while I remained behind him. I asked, "Are you okay?"
Zhang Xun replied, "I'm fine. Let's go back."
After we finished, we headed upstairs to the room. Zhang Xun said nothing and quickly returned to his own room. I called out to him, but he ignored me. I felt that Zhang Xun seemed to know some truth, yet he was caught in a struggle between believing and not believing.
Gao Ling turned to me and asked, "Fei, what's going on with Brother Zhang?"
I shook my head, indicating that I didn't know. I said to Zhang Xun, "The matter with the massage parlor can be settled now; you should have them pay." Upon hearing this, Gao Ling immediately brightened up. Sometimes I envied Gao Ling for her pursuit of simplicity.
When her desires were fulfilled, the most genuine smile would appear on her face.
Gao Ling quickly called the person in charge of the massage parlor to inform them that everything was done and they could proceed with the payment. After hanging up, she said she was going to celebrate a bit, leaving me alone in the living room.
I sat there for quite a while. After some time, I went to the window and looked down. Sure enough, I saw a ghost burning paper downstairs. I watched as it dropped the last piece of Ghost Money and then left.
I was stunned, feeling somewhat conflicted. The Taoist was supposed to take me to see a coffin tomorrow night, but why did this ghost know about it in advance?
A coffin? What was so special about seeing a coffin? Could it be that it was the kind of coffin meant for the five of us? Five coffins had emerged for five people; was this long-buried secret about to be revealed? Those involved had already started appearing.
That night, Lin Xue showed up and told me to return to my room. She said, "Chen Lang, don't go tomorrow night."
I asked, "Why not?"
Lin Xue replied, "The Taoist is not a good person; he will definitely harm you."
I stared at Lin Xue, but her gaze seemed somewhat evasive. I continued looking at her and asked, "Are you hiding something from me?"
Looking at Lin Xue like this, I always felt that she was hiding something from me. Her eyes were filled with sorrow as she said, "Chen Lang, will you blame me?"
I replied that I wouldn’t.
Yet Lin Xue still seemed somewhat unconvinced and continued to ask, "Really, you won’t?"
I affirmed with a sound, and then Lin Xue said, "Chen Lang, actually our Yin Marriage was arranged by a Taoist priest."
After hearing this, I was taken aback. I had thought it was Lin Xue's own decision; now I learned it was arranged by a Taoist priest who hadn’t directly told me anything except that this Yin Marriage could not be undone, or else I would lose my spouse.
Had I been deceived all this time? My feelings were complicated. Lin Xue said, "Chen Lang, go ahead and scold me." At that moment, her eyes were glistening with tears, and droplets began to slide down her cheeks.
I asked, "Why did you lie to me?"
"The Taoist priest said you are very special. With our Yin Marriage, I can bring you back to life."
A conspiracy—so this was also part of a scheme. A bitter smile tugged at the corners of my mouth as I said to Lin Xue, "You should leave."
Crying, Lin Xue replied, "Chen Lang, didn’t you say you wouldn’t blame me?"
I told her that while I wouldn’t blame her, I couldn’t allow her to achieve what she wanted. So please leave; after all, we are destined to be on different paths—it's better to end things now.
Lin Xue insisted, "Chen Lang, I won’t leave. I've realized that I've already fallen for you."
I didn't respond. Lin Xue sat by my bed, talking a lot, but I remained silent. Too many conspiracies surrounded me, and I was truly exhausted. I told Lin Xue that I didn't blame her and that she could leave.
Suddenly, Lin Xue asked me, "Chen Lang, did you ever love me?" Her question caught me off guard. Did I love her? I thought I might have.
I nodded slightly, and Lin Xue said, "Then I'm not leaving. Chen Lang, I want to stay by your side forever."
I sighed; there wasn't much else to say. I stared at Lin Xue, and she suddenly added, "Chen Lang, how about we have a baby together?"
I didn't know how to respond; all I felt was a bittersweet ache in my heart. I told Lin Xue that it was better not to have one—humans and ghosts weren't suited for each other.
Lin Xue let out a soft "oh" and fell silent. She leaned against my shoulder and said, "Chen Lang, remember not to go out tomorrow night."
My emotions were complicated, so I spoke up, telling Lin Xue that I wanted some time alone and that she should go for now. After my words, I noticed tears welling up in her eyes. I reassured her that she could come find me tomorrow as she finally left with a satisfied expression.
Lying on the bed alone, I stared at the ceiling while murmuring about conspiracies. Soon after, Zhang Pangzi called me. His voice was low as he said, "Chen Fei, come out; let's meet."
I asked where we should meet.
Zhang Pangzi told me he was waiting downstairs. Without hesitation, I went down. I quickly ran into Zhang Pangzi, but this time he was accompanied by an incredibly beautiful woman.
