Living Funeral
I glanced at Yang Xiu, whose face was as pale as washed starch. Had he reached his limit? The light here was dim, and I held my phone while he carried a lantern, gripping a bottle in his right hand.
I asked, "What's in there? Why do we need to drink this water made from the Yellow Talisman?"
After my words fell, Yang Xiu seemed lost in thought for a moment before replying, "In the courtyard to the left, not all the residents are human. People like us who have some skills can stay here without issue, but you can't. Those without skills shouldn't drink this water; they fear that if they go in, a ghost might lure their soul away."
"Is that true?" I still felt skeptical.
"Of course it's true. Why would I lie to you?" Yang Xiu said.
At that moment, my phone finally had a signal. I found Yang Xiu's demeanor eerie and his tone unsettling; he didn't seem like a good person at all. So I told him, "Wait a moment; I need to make a call first."
Yang Xiu replied, "Make it quick. If Witch Sister finds out, it won't be good."
I nodded; it seemed he was quite afraid of Witch Sister. I quickly dialed Fat Zhang's number and waited for a few seconds until the call connected, but no one answered. I muttered under my breath for him to pick up quickly.
Damn it, but in the end, no one answered.
Seeing me hang up, Yang Xiu walked over and asked, "Time is running out; are you going in or not?"
Thinking about Witch Sister's words and glancing at Yang Xiu again, if it came down to appearances, I would definitely trust Witch Sister. Taking a deep breath, I said, "I'm not going in."
Damn it, what if Yang Xiu tries to trick me later? If I'm going in, I'll go in on my own terms.
Yang Xiu still wanted to give me water, but I wasn't going to fall for that again and end up drinking a bowl of Mind-Controlling Soup. I wasn't a fool.
When Yang Xiu saw that I wasn't going in, he immediately asked, "Why aren't you going in? Aren't you looking for someone? I really saw those two people inside. If I'm lying, may I be eaten by ghosts, with my bones left behind."
His tone was somewhat agitated; it seemed he really wanted me to go in. So I asked, "Why do you want to help me?"
He didn't answer right away but said, "I feel a connection with you and want to help. Besides, there are no good people around here. I don't want to see an innocent person get hurt. Do you know who Witch Sister and her father are?"
I shook my head, and Yang Xiu quickly replied, "They are Evil Spirits, real Evil Spirits." His voice became hoarse as he spoke, strained yet subdued, making it sound quite unpleasant.
Looking at Yang Xiu and the Wu Luo father-daughter duo, I thought that since I had no idea what this place was about, I wouldn't trust anyone.
If I didn't trust Wu Luo, naturally, I wouldn't trust Yang Xiu either.
After pondering for a moment, I told Yang Xiu, "I'm tired and want to go back to sleep. If there's anything else, just say it." After saying this, I started walking forward, but as soon as I took a step, Yang Xiu grabbed my wrist.
I quickly reacted and asked, "What do you want?"
Yang Xiu's pale face looked even more sinister under the dim light as he said, "No matter what, you're going in today. Whether you want to or not, I'm trying to help you, but you won't believe me. Are you doubting me?" As he spoke, he pulled hard on my wrist; that bastard had quite a bit of strength.
Before long, he was dragging me into the alley while I struggled fiercely.
Yang Xiu said, "Once you go in, you'll see what's inside."
I was furious as he yanked me, and I cursed, "Damn you!" Then I kicked out, landing a solid blow right on Yang Xiu's waist. He stumbled backward from the impact.
Seizing the moment, I broke free and turned to run.
Damn it, this bastard couldn't handle a soft approach and resorted to force. But I wasn't going to go down easily. I sprinted toward my home, but I hadn't gone far when Yang Xiu lunged at me from behind, tackling me to the ground. My face hit the dirt.
He let out a chilling laugh that sent shivers down my spine.
"What are you?" I demanded.
Yang Xiu replied with a grin, "You don't need to worry about who I am; just drink this bowl of soup first."
I cursed inwardly; I had really encountered someone intent on forcing me to drink soup. Just as Wu Luo had warned, there was no way I was drinking that.
"You bastard! You're lying to me. You're not a Ghost Hunter from Zhongnan Mountain; you're a Yin Person, aren't you?"
"What? What did you say? I'm a Yin Person? How dare you say that!" His tone was increasingly deranged, almost twisted. He pressed down on me with surprising strength. "You dare call me a Yin Person?"
Hearing his tone confirmed Wu Luo hadn't lied.
He held me down—damn it, there was no way to escape. Reluctantly, I shouted for help, calling out loudly in hopes someone would come to my rescue.
But after several desperate cries, no one appeared.
Yang Xiu became anxious, saying, "Stop shouting! If someone finds us, we're both dead."
"Fuck your ancestors, you damn Yin Person. I bet you're the one who will die," I retorted.
Yang Xiu was truly panicking now. He covered my mouth with his hand and said, "You've really made me angry."
Just then, my phone rang. Damn it, could this be Fatty calling? But my phone was in my pocket, and with him pressing down on me, there was no way I could reach it.
Yang Xiu seemed to have some ulterior motive for trying to lure me into the left courtyard.
At that moment, I couldn't care less. I opened my mouth and bit down on Yang Xiu's hand. He yelped in pain and released me, blood oozing from the wound. I spat out some blood and said to him, "Damn it! Let me answer the call. If I do, I'll go in with you. How about that?"
"What call? Go to hell!" Yang Xiu snapped.
He was furious now, his hand bleeding as he pressed down on me. He poured the Mind-Controlling Soup onto his hand and forced it into my mouth. I was caught off guard and swallowed some of it, immediately feeling dizzy.
My strength began to fade, but perhaps due to the small amount I had consumed, I still had some energy left. Yang Xiu got off me and tried to help me up, intending to drag me inside.
I took a deep breath and mustered my last bit of strength to push him away. "Screw you!"
This infuriated Yang Xiu even more. He kicked me to the ground and then poured the entire bottle of Mind-Controlling Soup down my throat. In those final moments, I could still hear my phone ringing before everything went black.
I don't know how much time passed, but it felt like I was dreaming. In the dream, someone was cutting open my wrist, drinking my blood while grinning sinisterly, planning to eat my flesh and boil my bones for soup.
It was a terrifying dream, until a bloodied knife came towards my neck, and I immediately shouted, "No!"
Then I opened my eyes and saw Wu Luo. At that moment, beads of cold sweat broke out on my forehead. I asked, "What are you doing here?"
Wu Luo replied, "Do you remember what happened last night?"
"Last night?" I began to recall, but my head felt a bit heavy, and I couldn't remember clearly.
At that moment, the maid standing behind Wu Luo said, "You almost died last night. If it weren't for my sister saving you, you wouldn't be able to speak now."
"Almost died."
I tried to sit up from the bed, but found that I had no strength at all. It took a lot of effort just to sit up. Seeing me like this, Wu Luo helped me.
As memories flooded back into my mind, I suddenly thought of Yang Xiu. Yes, it was Yang Xiu. I encountered Yang Xiu last night, and then it seemed like Yang Xiu made me drink a bowl of Mind-Controlling Soup. After that, I had a nightmare where someone was drinking my blood—draining it completely.
Thinking of this, I hurriedly looked at my wrist and saw that it was indeed wrapped in a white bandage.
Suddenly, my heart sank. Could it be that last night wasn't just a dream? Was everything that happened real? Panic began to set in as I asked Wu Luo, "What did Yang Xiu do to me last night?"
