Living Funeral
I lay in the coffin, and soon Cui Fang climbed in beside me. She pressed down on me and began to stroke my body. Suddenly, she grabbed my wrist and said, “Husband, how about we become husband and wife through blood today?”
I immediately spoke up, expressing my disagreement.
She replied, “You disagree? Do you see that grave pit next to us? If you don’t agree, that’s where you’re going—I’ll bury you alive.”
Without caring whether I agreed or not, she cut my finger. However, not a drop of blood touched her. She suddenly said ominously, “Once this succeeds, your blood won’t harm me anymore; from then on, all your blood will belong to me.”
At that moment, Cui Fang became somewhat unsettling.
Every movement and expression of hers made me feel nauseous as my blood flowed out and dripped onto my body.
Suddenly, I gasped in surprise because once the blood landed on me, I realized I could move. Cui Fang had closed her eyes and seemed to be muttering something; I had seen enough of these Eerie rituals.
“By his blood, bind my soul,” she chanted aloud.
But once I discovered I could move, I completely lost patience. I kicked out forcefully—Damn it, trying to harm me? No way!
My kick was too strong; she was sitting on top of me, perfectly positioned for my strike. My foot came from behind and kicked her away. Cui Fang toppled toward me, and I quickly pulled out my Hundred Ghosts Diagram, slapping it onto her.
In an instant, Cui Fang seemed to be electrocuted, letting out a shriek before being thrown back.
I swiftly crawled out of the coffin. Instead of pursuing her while she was down, I turned and ran with the Hundred Ghosts Diagram in hand, heading back the way I came. It felt surreal; how could Zhang Xun and Gao Qing, with their skills, be so easily deceived?
As I ran, pondering this question, I suddenly heard Cui Fang's voice behind me: “Husband, I won’t let you go.”
"Husband," I cursed under my breath, but my feet dared not slow down as I ran forward like a madman.
At that moment, the color around me seemed to brighten slightly, and I hoped to reach the sunlight. Once there, the sun would surely burn her to death. She had to be a ghost; there was no doubt about it. Just a moment ago, she had deceived me, claiming she was neither human nor ghost.
I ran for a while longer when suddenly, a hand pressed down on my shoulder.
Damn it! My heart sank at that moment. Had I really not managed to escape? I gripped the Hundred Ghosts Diagram tightly in my hand, ready to turn and confront whatever was behind me.
But when I turned around, my hand froze in place because it was Gao Ling standing behind me.
Once I regained my composure, I cursed, "You scared the hell out of me!" Then I added, "There's a ghost behind me."
Gao Ling replied, "Calm down, Fei. Brother Zhang and Gao Qing have already gone to deal with Cui Fang's lair."
I was left speechless.
After a moment of confusion, I asked, "So you all heard me calling your names earlier but chose not to respond?"
Gao Ling said, "They didn't let me answer."
"Damn it! You all ganged up on me like this? What the hell!"
Gao Ling replied, "Then Cui Fang definitely won't catch up; she must be scared out of her wits."
I asked, "Then who was chasing me just now? It couldn't have been you, right?"
Gao Ling chuckled and patted her head. "Yeah! I was actually trying to give you a surprise."
"Fuck, you scared me! What a surprise!" Gao Ling said, "Take a smoke to calm down."
"Are you treating me like bait?" I replied.
I took the cigarette from him. Gao Ling suggested I should relax. I sighed, lit the cigarette, and took a drag. What else could I do to calm down? I asked, "Where's Zhao Fan?"
Gao Ling said he had gone over there.
"Oh," I responded. We waited there until dawn, around seven o'clock when the sun finally came up. I called out to Gao Ling, "Why don't you give them a call? Why aren't they here yet? Something didn't happen, did it?"
Gao Ling pulled out his phone and called Gao Qing.
I stood up from the ground and glanced down the road. Gao Ling quickly told me, "The call won't go through."
"I'll go take a look," I said. Gao Ling agreed, and we had just walked about a hundred steps when we saw Zhang Xun and the others returning, with Zhao Fan trailing behind.
Looking at the three of them, Zhang Xun and Gao Qing seemed fine, but Zhao Fan looked like he had rolled in mud; he was completely dirty. I asked, "Did Cui Fang die?"
Zhao Fan squeezed out from behind the two and said, "Brother Fei, I've really learned something this time. That woman's soul was burned to death by Dao Fire, along with her lair. These two are truly powerful."
I stared at Zhang Xun and Gao Qing for a moment. I wanted to say something but sighed and let it go.
We left Snake Skin Gully; our business there was done. I wondered how the Taoist was doing now. After leaving Snake Skin Gully, the journey was relatively smooth. Although I didn't understand why Cui Fang hated the Chen family so much, I realized it didn't matter.
It was probably just a matter of love and hate.
After exiting Snake Skin Gully, we didn't head to Chenjiaba; we left directly instead.
When we reached the city, we parted ways. Zhang Xun remembered to take me to Mountain Lodge, and of course, I didn't refuse. However, Gao Qing seemed to be pulling Gao Ling along for what appeared to be something important.
Zhao Fan went home by himself.
Zhang Xun said to me, "Chen Fei, we're heading to Mountain Lodge now."
I nodded in acknowledgment and took out my phone to call Fatty Zhang. Unfortunately, he didn't answer, so I had no choice but to send him a text message saying, "Fatty Zhang, we're setting off for Mountain Lodge now."
After sending the simple message, I turned to Zhang Xun and suggested, "How about we find a place to rest for the night before heading out? My phone is almost dead."
Zhang Xun hesitated for a moment but agreed. We casually found a hotel and slept from dawn until dusk, only waking up at six in the evening. My head was pounding.
I shook my head to clear it a bit and then got out of bed to knock on Zhang Xun's door.
As soon as I knocked once, the door opened. I looked in and saw Zhang Xun lying on the bed. I thought it was strange that the door was left open. I called out his name, but there was no response. I called again, still nothing. Curiosity got the better of me, so I pushed him gently.
But even with that push, Zhang Xun remained unresponsive. At the same time, I noticed that his body felt cold and stiff, like a corpse.
No way! My heart raced as I approached him. Looking closely, I saw that his face was pale and devoid of color—he looked just like a dead person. I checked for his breath.
Just a second later, I withdrew my hand in shock. He was dead! How could this happen? He was fine just yesterday; how could he suddenly die?
I couldn't shake the thought: Was this really Zhang Xun?
Was Zhang Xun truly dead? Panic set in as I debated whether to call the police or take him to the hospital. Ultimately, I decided on the hospital and dialed 10 for help. The ambulance arrived quickly, but before we even reached the hospital, Zhang Xun was pronounced dead on arrival.
I was at a loss for words, completely stunned; this incident happened without any warning.
I said to the doctor, "Maybe we should take them to the hospital and see if they can help."
The doctor who came with the ambulance replied, "Let's give it a try."
Once we arrived at the hospital, they were immediately rushed into the operating room. Fifteen minutes later, the doctor came out and said to me, "They didn't make it."
I was frozen for a few seconds and asked, "Is there really no way to save them?"
"They were already dead when they were brought in."
Hearing this news felt like my head was about to explode. Was it really true? Zhang Xun was gone? I kept asking myself in disbelief. How could this happen? It was already past eight in the evening.
Zhang Xun was wheeled out by the nurse. I stepped forward and lifted the white sheet to take a look at Zhang Xun. The reality of Zhang Xun's death was something I could never have anticipated.
This was truly an unbelievable death.
