Living Funeral
Perhaps it was because I had pushed too hard, but Zhao Fan stumbled and nearly fell to the ground. I hurriedly replaced the lid on the wine jar, pressing down on the hand inside. My face turned pale with fear, while Gao Ling stood frozen in shock. Zhao Fan, still oblivious to what was happening, steadied himself and asked, "Brother Fei, what are you doing?"
Zhao Fan had never been known for his temper, but he had always treated me well. Now, suddenly pushed for no reason, he seemed ready to explode, speaking to me in a harsh tone.
I pressed down on the lid, still shaken from the earlier scare. When Zhao Fan shouted at me, my anger flared. "Did you not see the hand reaching out from this Wine Jar just now?"
Zhao Fan looked at me in confusion, clearly not processing what I was saying.
"A hand?" Zhao Fan replied, bewildered. Gao Ling chimed in, "Fan Ge, you should thank Fei. If it weren't for him just now, you would have ended up soaking in that Wine Jar."
I kept my hand on the lid. Although I didn't feel any force pushing up from inside the jar now, the impression of that hand had left a lasting mark on me.
Feeling no further movement from within, I finally relaxed my grip.
Zhao Fan asked, "Was it really like that just now?" Gao Ling added, "Fan Ge, you're truly ungrateful! Fei has helped you so many times; how can you still doubt him?"
After hearing this, Zhao Fan's expression changed as he said, "Brother Fei, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to."
I waved my hand dismissively; it was nothing.
Zhang Xun and Gao Qing approached us and asked, "What’s in this wine jar?"
I replied, "I think I saw a corpse just now." By this point, I had managed to calm my emotions.
Zhang Xun and Gao Qing were bold and fearless; they immediately lifted the lid of the wine jar again. After doing so, I glanced at Zhang Xun with concern.
However, Zhang Xun seemed to ignore my warning and continued to peer into the Wine Jar.
"Zhang Xun said calmly, no wonder I smelled a stench of decay earlier; the source is right here.
Seeing that Zhang Xun was fine, I walked over to the Wine Jar. However, after taking a glance, my expression turned extremely grim because there was a corpse floating inside.
The body had turned pale from being soaked, and when the lid was removed, it floated to the surface. No wonder I saw a hand rising earlier.
So that's how it is.
Zhang Xun continued, 'No wonder this wine smells so fragrant.'
All five of us huddled around the wine vat. This method is truly cruel; they actually used a person to brew wine. I've seen wine made with snakes, but never with humans.
After a few glances, I felt nauseous. The smell of the wine made me want to vomit.
Gao Ling said, 'Then the other Wine Jars must be the same.' With that, Gao Ling opened a few more jars, and indeed, we were all stunned.
Could there be hundreds of corpses soaked in wine here? Just thinking about that number sent chills down my spine!
This place is simply terrifying. I said, 'There’s nothing else here besides these Wine Jars. Let’s get out of here.'
Zhao Fan, who had also been frightened earlier, said, 'Yeah, let’s leave. It’s eerie here; we don’t want to stir up any more trouble.'
I started to feel something was off, and my unease grew stronger.
Since there were so many Wine Jars here, we couldn’t possibly check each one. After I spoke, Zhang Xun said, 'Chen Fei, don’t be naive. Since we came in, do you think it will be easy to get out? Besides, what you're looking for might be right here.'
Gao Qing's expression changed. 'You know?'"
Zhang Xun did not respond to Gao Qing's words. Instead, he walked over to me and said, "Someone knocked on the door earlier to bring you in. Now, trying to get out is not going to be easy."
I felt that Zhang Xun was right. But how would I know unless I tried? However, the words were stuck in my throat because Zhang Xun mentioned that there might be a coffin here.
Yet the Taoist had not shown himself, and the woman in red also remained hidden. I looked around this space, but aside from the Wine Jar, there was nothing else. How could there be a coffin here?
"Taoist, this time I asked for your help; consider it a gamble."
I asked Zhang Xun, "Where is the coffin?"
I told Zhang Xun that the coffin was very important to me. He replied, "I know."
Zhang Xun began to move, walking over to the wine altar, tapping and knocking around as if searching for something. The crisp sound echoed in the space.
Gao Qing also joined in the search. Everything was going smoothly until I struck one of the Wine Jars, which suddenly shattered into pieces.
I quickly stepped back and exclaimed, "Something's wrong!" Everyone turned to look at me.
I was drenched in wine, but fortunately, the shards of the Wine Jar did not splatter towards me. Startled, I cursed under my breath.
Everyone's gaze shifted toward me, and it soon became clear that it wasn't just one shattered Wine Jar; there were three or four of them.
From the broken Wine Jars emerged corpses soaked in wine for who knows how long.
Seeing this scene made me realize that trouble was imminent.
Zhang Xun and the others quickly retreated to an open area. At that moment, I thought about what would happen if all those hundreds of jars of wine exploded—wouldn't that mean hundreds of corpses would rise?
As I looked at the pale bodies reeking of alcohol, my stomach churned, and I felt like throwing up.
"Now what do we do?" Zhao Fan asked.
I replied, "What did you do before? Just do the same now. If we need to run, then we run; if not, we should deal with these strange corpses."
I thought to myself that our escape route was likely blocked, but I couldn't bear the thought of not taking a look for myself. However, I knew I couldn't leave just yet. I felt conflicted inside, but ultimately decided to stay.
The pale corpses stood still in place, while we had retreated to an open area.
"This time, it seems we're in serious trouble," Gao Ling said.
I nodded. Zhao Fan remarked that he never expected these fine wines were made from human bodies.
The corpses began to close in on us.
"Should we retreat?" Zhao Fan asked.
I shook my head and whispered for the Taoist priest. "I'm looking for a coffin for you; why don't you show yourself?" But after I spoke, there was no response.
The corpses approached me with a clear intent—not to attack but to kneel before me, bowing repeatedly.
We were all stunned, unsure of what was happening. As the person directly involved, I was even more confused. Having only recently taken on this path, I didn't dare move as over ten pale bodies knelt before me. What was going on?
"Gao Ling, what is happening?" she asked.
I wanted to know the answer too. My heart raced as I struggled to comprehend the situation. I didn't even dare to move and began surveying our surroundings.
Gao Qing looked at me strangely, while Zhao Fan said, "Brother Fei, did you use some kind of spell to make these corpses kneel?"
I was speechless. I wished I could, but I really didn't have that ability. I inhaled sharply, intending to ask Zhang Xun about it, but Zhang Xun seemed lost in thought.
The atmosphere became a bit strange, so I asked Gao Qing, "What's going on?"
Gao Qing shook his head, indicating he didn't know. The corpses began to perform a grand gesture of respect towards me, the kind that involved three kneels and nine bows. It made my heart race with anxiety.
Damn it, these dead people are bowing to me—could this lead to something good? I've only ever heard of the living worshipping the dead, but never of the Dead Sacrifice bowing to the living.
The Dead Sacrifice bowing to the living felt like an inversion of the natural order. If this continued, it would surely lead to serious trouble.
I started to back away from the corpses, but they followed me. Everyone else was frozen in place; perhaps because the corpses weren't attacking them, they didn't react.
I thought to myself that this was just ridiculous. At that moment, Zhang Xun said to me, "Chen Fei, look above you."
I quickly glanced up and saw a large Bagua Diagram hovering overhead.
