Living Funeral
At that moment, Gao Ling let out a startled scream. I thought she had spotted the coffin, but as I looked in the direction she was heading, I realized that wasn't the case.
Gao Ling quickly exclaimed, "Fly, there are two corpses here!"
Her words drew everyone's attention, and we quickly gathered around her.
The space was relatively large, allowing all six of us to move freely. The light illuminated the bodies, which had been so badly mangled that they were unrecognizable.
I asked Zhao Fan, "Isn't this the couple who drowned?" At that moment, Zhao Fan pulled out a photo from his pocket. After glancing at it, he said, "It's hard to tell what they look like now, but their clothes match."
It was strange; despite the gruesome state of the two corpses, there was no foul odor emanating from them. I thought to myself that it might have something to do with cats being fastidious creatures, though I couldn't figure out how they managed it.
After confirming the identities of the two bodies, Zhao Fan instructed two of his disciples, "You two need to take these corpses outside."
The two disciples were clearly accustomed to dealing with corpses and didn't seem bothered by it as they agreed without hesitation. I glanced at the time; it was already eight in the morning, yet this place remained shrouded in darkness.
The two quickly carried the bodies out, leaving the four of us in the pitch-black cave.
However, even now we hadn't spotted a single Yin Cat. I turned to Zhang Xun and the others and asked, "Did you not notice there's a coffin right above our heads?"
As soon as I finished speaking, Gao Ling immediately looked up and cursed, "What the hell? How is that coffin even hanging up there?"
Lao Liu had transformed into a Cat Person and jumped into the river but had yet to be discovered.
Zhao Fan remarked, "Maybe that's the coffin of the Cat Demon King up there?" His tone was somewhat eerie, especially since we still hadn't seen a single Yin Cat around!
The coffin was positioned about two meters above our heads. The outer layer of its color had peeled away, indicating that it was quite old.
Zhang Xun glanced at it a few times before saying, "Let's lower the coffin."
I surveyed the surroundings and noticed that withered vines were still climbing along the walls of the cave.
The coffin was secured with iron chains, making it no easy task to lower it. Climbing up might be possible, but given its age, it could very well be decayed.
Zhang Xun was a man of action. After speaking, he began to move. He asked me to provide support, so I squatted down and stacked my hands together. He would use my palms to push himself up.
I agreed and quickly followed Zhang Xun's instructions. I initially thought he would be heavy, but to my surprise, when I pushed with all my strength, I found him unexpectedly light.
Zhang Xun moved nimbly and soon landed on top of the coffin. It swayed a few times, but he stabilized himself and called down to us, "Be careful."
Gao Ling shouted back, "You should be the one being careful!"
I urged Gao Ling and Zhao Fan to step back from the coffin because if Zhang Xun managed to bring it down, it could fall on someone.
We took a few steps back. Zhang Xun didn't act immediately; instead, he began to write something on the coffin with cinnabar. I couldn't see exactly what he was writing.
However, once Zhang Xun finished writing, the coffin suddenly shook. I clearly saw that it was moving on its own.
I couldn't help but warn Zhang Xun, "The coffin is moving by itself."
Zhang Xun acknowledged with a sound, understanding the situation. Zhao Fan and Gao Ling stared intently at the coffin. Outside was bright, but inside here felt no different from night!
I was also afraid of something going wrong, so I reminded Zhao Fan and Gao Ling to have everything ready in their hands, to avoid any panic later. The flames had already been ignited; it was the kind of fire that used gas, and this type of fire wouldn't be easily extinguished.
Zhang Xun began jumping on top, bouncing several times, causing the coffin to sway more and more. Our anxiety grew with each movement.
The sound of "bang bang bang" echoed continuously as Zhang Xun grabbed the iron chain and started jumping forcefully on the coffin.
With a loud "crack," the coffin, which had already appeared somewhat decayed, finally couldn't hold up anymore and fell from above. Zhang Xun quickly grabbed onto the iron chain.
At the moment the coffin dropped, Gao Ling and I quickly stepped back.
A loud clatter rang out but soon faded away. Zhang Xun's body swayed as we stared at the coffin. It had nearly shattered upon impact, revealing what was inside. I quickly caught sight of its contents.
However, upon seeing it, I couldn't help but gasp in shock. Inside the coffin lay a humanoid creature.
It seemed as if it hadn't woken up yet, curled up and sleeping. Its body was covered in fur, but it was certain that it wasn't human.
Zhang Xun jumped down from above, and none of us could take our eyes off the Strange Creature.
"Could it be the Cat Demon King?" Zhao Fan mused, still fixated on the idea of the Cat Demon King. It did look somewhat like a transformed Yin Cat.
I felt a sense of unease creeping in. Gao Ling suggested that regardless of what it was, since it wasn't awake now, we might as well burn it to death with a fire.
I thought that was a good idea; we could burn down its lair along with it.
But to my utter surprise, Zhang Xun suddenly walked toward the Strange Creature. Just then, I heard a faint meowing sound.
My heart immediately raced, and the meowing sounds were not just coming from one Yin Cat, but from many.
The noise was coming from directly above us. We quickly looked up, and as the lights illuminated the area, we saw countless pairs of Youlan-colored eyes appearing all at once.
Suddenly, many heads emerged from a hole in the wall about four meters above us. At a glance, it was clear they were Yin Cats.
Damn, no wonder there were no traces of these Yin Cats; they were all hiding up there.
These Yin Cats let out eerie cries, sending a chill down my spine. We had already seen the two corpses that had been gnawed to such a state.
At this moment, we were practically surrounded.
Gao Ling said, "What should we do now?"
Zhao Fan added, "Damn it, I didn't expect these Yin Cats to be hiding up there."
The atmosphere became incredibly tense. However, Zhang Xun seemed oblivious to the situation and continued squatting in front of the Strange Creature.
Although the Yin Cats were making noise, they had yet to take any immediate action.
Looking up, there were at least hundreds of Yin Cats! If they decided to pounce on us, it wouldn't take long for a living person to be reduced to nothing but bones.
But upon closer listening, despite their eerie cries, there was something soft about the sound.
The Yin Cats began to climb down from their high perch, one after another landing on the ground.
The strange creature in the coffin had not yet awakened, and I couldn't understand why Zhang Xun was still crouching in front of it.
Earlier, the coffin had moved on its own, but even as it fell, the strange creature remained lifeless.
We had already taken out the daggers we had prepared in advance, along with some Black Dog Blood and other supplies.
Although the Yin Cats had fallen to the ground, they did not attack; instead, they seemed to be observing something.
At that moment, Zhang Xun raised his hand and slowly reached toward the head of the strange creature. Just then, the Yin Cats could no longer hold back.
They surged forward like mad beasts, and the three of us quickly reacted. Zhao Fan immediately set fire to them while I splashed the Black Dog Blood onto the ground.
These Yin Cats were heavily yin in nature, so when I poured the Black Dog Blood on them, it caused significant harm. The Yin Cats let out painful shrieks but continued to charge at us frantically.
However, despite their madness, their strength was lacking; their charges were not very forceful.
Yet their numbers gave them an advantage, and we still found ourselves at a disadvantage.
Gao Ling shouted that this situation couldn't go on like this!
I glanced at Zhang Xun. When his hand touched the head of the strange creature a few times, it finally began to awaken...
