Living Funeral
The woman in red was anxious, but I was even more so! Because I was the one in danger. I turned my head to glance behind me, and my soul nearly left my body.
Those Yin Cats, illuminated by the mining lamp, had eyes glowing with a ghostly hue that was terrifying to the extreme. My heart raced with fear as I clearly saw the Dead Heads perched atop their bodies. They were nothing but a layer of skin left, their eyes completely hollowed out. However, their hair remained intact, and with the heads of these Yin Cats burrowing into them, the skin was stretched taut and bulging.
They were creating this illusion for us. Damn it, had these Yin Cats really become sentient?
At that moment, they emitted a wailing sound reminiscent of a child's cry, which was utterly chilling! And more and more Yin Cats were approaching from behind.
I struggled to move towards the shore, while Gao Ling and Zhao Fan were moving faster than I was.
Damn it, I was really going to die of anxiety! I moved forward slowly, and the woman in red beside me encouraged me, "Come on, Chen Lang!" The cat cries continued to echo around us.
The Taoist stood beside me as well. I called out to him, and he said, "Let me teach you how to seal the spirits."
I thought to myself that now was not the time for lessons on sealing spirits! We needed to get rid of these ghostly creatures first! My whole body was drenched; it was deep into the night, and a cold wind blew through, making me shiver uncontrollably.
The cat was getting closer. My heart raced; in the next second, one of its claws reached out toward me.
Damn it! This bastard Zhao Fan had really gotten me into trouble this time. With so many places to land, why did we have to choose this particular spot? It seemed like this horror would come at a price.
I was almost ready to give up when Gao Ling shouted, "Fly! Use fire! Quickly take out your lighter!" After hearing Gao Ling's words, I hurriedly pulled out my lighter and flicked it on. Sure enough, a small flame appeared, and the Yin Cat right behind me slowed its pace.
But such a weak light wouldn't be enough. It seemed that the Taoist couldn't help me now; I could see that the cat was about to pounce. In a panic, I grabbed the human skin mask on its head and swung it hard away from me.
I cursed angrily, "Damn it! Do you think I'm easy to bully?" But unexpectedly, after flinging one Yin Cat away, the others seemed to be enraged by my actions and rushed toward me. I took a difficult step back while they advanced three or four steps closer.
It seemed there was no escaping this disaster today; Gao Ling and Zhao Fan were almost at the shore.
I turned my head again, and damn it, three or four Yin Cats had already appeared right behind me. This time, there was no way to escape.
Just then, someone suddenly shouted, "Get down!"
I hesitated for a moment. Getting down now would mean certain death, wouldn’t it? If I lay down, those Yin Cats would just come and devour me.
However, the voice sounded somewhat familiar. I looked ahead in the direction of the voice and saw a shadow rushing toward me. Upon closer inspection, I realized it was Zhang Xun. After a quick glance, I immediately dropped to the ground.
Zhang Xun seemed to have used some method; he raised his leg and kicked out, sending one Yin Cat flying far away. Then he ignited a fierce flame and shouted to me, "You need to get to shore!"
At that moment, Gao Ling and Zhao Fan had already reached the riverbank. Zhao Fan tossed a rope toward me, and I quickly grabbed it. The two of them pulled me with all their might toward the shore.
I shouted to Zhang Xun, "Can you make it?"
"Just get to shore; don’t worry about me," Zhang Xun replied calmly. The fire in front of him didn’t last long before it extinguished.
I couldn’t help but yell, "Zhang Xun, you need to retreat too!"
But Zhang Xun didn’t back away; instead, he let out a strange cry—one I had never heard before. As soon as that sound emerged, the Yin Cats surprisingly halted in their tracks.
They also began to emit low whines. The cries of the Yin Cats were mournful and sorrowful, harmonizing oddly with Zhang Xun's call. It was strange; before long, those Yin Cats actually started to retreat.
Zhang Xun began to back away as well. At this point, I felt like a mud doll. When the red-clad female ghost saw that I was safe, a satisfied expression appeared on her face. However, she quickly said to me, "Chen Lang, I'm leaving now. Take care of yourself!" With that, the red-clad ghost vanished.
The Taoist priest also disappeared at this moment. This time he didn’t come to my rescue; perhaps he simply couldn’t save me at all.
The Yin Cats then sank back into the river and vanished from sight. I was still in shock; this was truly terrifying!
I was somewhat surprised that Zhang Xun could appear here.
Gao Ling lay on the ground, panting, and said under the moonlight, "Damn it, this time you really are lucky. You’ve put your brother in a tough spot."
I thanked Zhang Xun, who glanced at me with slightly furrowed brows, his pale face suggesting he was not pleased.
The three of us had narrowly escaped death, and Zhao Fan was overly excited, exclaiming, "Damn it, surviving such a disaster must mean good fortune ahead!"
"Yeah! There must be good fortune," Gao Ling echoed.
At that moment, I was still curious about how Zhang Xun had found his way here. So I asked him, "How did you get here?"
Zhang Xun replied, "This place isn't safe for conversation. Let's leave first." With that, he started walking ahead. Zhao Fan turned to me and said, "Brother Fei, your brother seems quite impressive. Just now in that muddy pit, he walked through it like it was nothing!"
I shot a glance at Zhao Fan and told him not to ask too many questions that shouldn't be asked.
Zhao Fan took the hint and fell silent, instead finding Gao Ling to chat. After experiencing life and death together, those two had plenty to talk about.
I was intensely curious about Zhang Xun; first and foremost was whether the fire in 198 had actually killed him.
Covered in mud, I hurried to catch up with Zhang Xun. As I reached his side and before I could speak, he said, "You have a lot of questions for me, don’t you?"
I nodded in agreement.
However, Zhang Xun didn’t wait for me to voice my doubts. He immediately asked, "Do you know someone is trying to harm you?" I froze at his words. Someone wanted to harm me? I recalled that Brother Li had given me a Dead Hand last time; it seemed Brother Li was indeed trying to set me up.
So I nodded to indicate that I understood.
"Do you really know?" Zhang Xun asked me in return. I nodded, indicating that I understood. Zhang Xun didn't press further but continued, "Your yin and yang are in chaos, with yang diminishing and yin increasing. You are extremely yin, and your vital energy is depleting. Are you aware of this?"
I shook my head, completely confused. Zhang Xun didn’t explain further and said, "From now on, you will listen to me."
I asked Zhang Xun, "Am I in trouble?"
Zhang Xun nodded slightly but didn’t elaborate. After taking a few steps, he said, "Your current task is to deal with those Yin Cats; otherwise, they will haunt you for a lifetime."
I replied, "Are they really that terrifying?" Zhang Xun countered, "Do you have any? You just witnessed what those Yin Cats are like."
Zhang Xun's words made sense. Those Yin Cats definitely needed to be dealt with. Zhao Fan's brother was a living example; he must have gone insane after seeing so many corpses while fishing them out of the river at night. The moment he returned home, the Yin Cats came knocking and devoured him alive. Just thinking about it sent a chill down my spine.
The hair on Zhang Xun's forehead swayed gently in the evening breeze as he sighed and added, "And then there's that urn; the ashes cannot be recovered."
I fell silent, unsure how to respond. The Taoist was right beside me; I wondered if he had heard Zhang Xun's words.
Seeing me quiet, Zhang Xun said, "I've answered what I should; now it's your turn to ask me questions."
I took a deep breath, feeling inexplicably tense. I glanced at Zhang Xun and finally asked, "In 198, did you really die in a fire?"
Zhang Xun looked at me and said, "Do you really want to know?"
