Living Funeral
I only heard Zhang Xun tell me that the urn was empty. What? I asked in shock, feeling a chill run through my heart. The urn was actually empty?
Zhang Xun said that when he found the urn, the ashes inside were already gone.
My heart sank. I didn’t raise my voice; I was afraid the Taoist priest was standing right next to me. What if he found out his ashes were missing? Would he explode on the spot? But Zhang Xun said to me, “The ashes might have been lost while it was in your possession.”
I insisted it was impossible! I lowered my voice, saying that I had carried the urn with me almost every moment, never letting it out of my sight.
Zhang Xun replied, “I’m ninety percent sure the ashes were lost from you.” His voice was also lowered.
At that moment, Gao Ling called out to me, asking me to come outside.
I wanted to clarify this matter with Zhang Xun, but he seemed to be in a hurry and told me, “Think it over carefully. If you remember anything, send me a message.” With that, Zhang Xun hung up.
Had the ashes really been lost from me?
I began to recall everyone I had interacted with over the past few days; indeed, they were a mixed bunch.
I couldn’t figure out who might have tampered with the urn at that moment, but I knew one thing: I couldn’t let the Taoist priest find out. Otherwise, I genuinely feared he would tear me apart.
Gao Ling and I got into the car, but the Taoist priest still hadn’t shown up.
Gao Ling asked me who I had just spoken to on the phone.
I replied it was a friend. But who could have taken the Taoist’s ashes? This thought left me restless. Thankfully, the priest couldn’t verify whether there were ashes in the urn at that moment.
Around seven o'clock, we arrived at Ghost Old Three's house.
Ghost Old Three was already waiting for me at home. Seeing him smile ominously, I felt an urge to punch him. However, for the sake of the bigger picture, I held back.
Ghost Old Three turned and went inside. Gao Ling angrily remarked, “Look at that smug face of his!”
I had no words and was about to step inside when suddenly a hand pressed down on my shoulder. I turned to see the Taoist standing behind me.
"Wait," he said.
I stared at him, feeling a bit uneasy inside. His ashes were gone, and I was afraid he might notice. But I maintained a calm exterior.
After a moment, the Taoist continued, "He will transfer your Yang Qi to that corpse tonight. To avoid any accidents during this process, apply Cinnabar to your navel. Also, bite your tongue to let some blood fill your mouth. Remember, you must listen to me."
I looked at the Taoist, his expression serious.
I nodded.
"You're fine now; go ahead," he said.
At that moment, the voice of Ghost Old Three urged me to hurry inside, while Gao Ling cursed angrily, "Hurry up! Damn it!"
Taking a deep breath, I suddenly felt an ominous sensation. I asked Gao Ling for some Cinnabar; those who usually dealt with Demon Gods would typically have it on hand. After he handed it to me, I applied the Cinnabar to my navel.
My palms were sweaty as Gao Ling asked what I was doing. I replied it was just in case.
Once inside, we entered the bedroom where the lights were off. Seven candles flickered with flames the size of soybeans, swaying with the airflow. The dim light created an eerie atmosphere in the room.
It was definitely false to say I wasn't nervous or scared, but being anxious and frightened wouldn't help either.
With my fate in Ghost Old Three's hands, I had no choice but to comply. "What should I do?" I asked him.
He glanced at me and said, "First, let out a bowl of blood." His tone suggested it was a matter of course. Holding back my frustration, I released my blood—three bowls in total—and felt increasingly unwell.
While letting out blood, I took a quick glance into the coffin.
I didn't know how long the person inside had been dead, but they looked fine. After finishing, Ghost Old Three wasted no time and poured my blood into the female corpse's mouth. During this process, the corpse moved slightly, prompting Ghost Old Three to forcefully push her down again.
Gao Ling and I exchanged glances. "Ghost Old Three," Gao Ling asked, "what exactly are you doing?"
At this moment, I couldn't afford to be distracted. I forcefully fed my blood to the female corpse.
Afterward, Ghost Old Three gently wiped the blood from the corners of her mouth. This twisted pervert had left a psychological scar on me with the earlier incident involving the corpse, and it still hadn't faded.
Ghost Old Three slowly stepped away from the coffin and said to me, "You can begin now."
I still had no idea how to proceed. However, after the female corpse drank my blood, her complexion seemed to improve slightly. Could it be that I was truly bringing this corpse back to life? I entertained this bold hypothesis in my mind.
I was uncertain whether I should take off my clothes.
Ghost Old Three then instructed me, "Come here first; take these Three Incense Sticks."
I took the Three Incense Sticks, and Ghost Old Three told me to strip. I shot him a glare, but he urged me to hurry up, adding that I needed to wear clothes when I slept with her later.
Hearing this made me breathe a sigh of relief. I took off my clothes, and Ghost Old Three quickly began writing something on my back.
I couldn't see what he was doing, but Gao Ling did. Upon seeing it, Gao Ling's emotions became agitated as he exclaimed, "Ghost Old Three, what are you drawing on my brother's back?"
Ghost Old Three replied disdainfully, "What do you know? Don't speak nonsense."
Gao Ling was left speechless.
A soul-requiem talisman? I murmured a few words to myself. I wanted to ask the Taoist about it, but he wasn't around at the moment. The cinnabar on my forehead had dwindled down to just one mark, but Ghost Old Three didn't notice.
Next, Ghost Old Three took out a red string and tied one end around my wrist and the other around the female corpse's wrist.
I asked Ghost Old Three, "Has it started yet?" My heart was uneasy. He replied, "Not yet; we have to wait until midnight when the Yin Qi gathers."
The Three Incense Sticks ignited in my hand, but their scent seemed different—there was a faintly putrid smell.
Unable to hold back, I asked, "What kind of incense is this?"
Ghost Old Three remained silent, his expression serious. Once lit, the incense indeed emitted an unpleasant odor. Gao Ling spoke up immediately, complaining about how terrible the smell was.
Because I was bound by the Red String, I was very close to the coffin. Although the light was dim, I could see with my own eyes that the corpse's nose seemed to twitch, as if it were inhaling the scent. A sense of panic began to rise within me, and my bad premonition grew stronger.
I didn't know how long this corpse had been kept by Ghost Old Three, but it seemed like the best opportunity had finally arrived.
I was genuinely worried and scared. Time passed second by second, yet the Taoist priest still hadn't appeared.
Gao Ling kept chattering away, while Ghost Old Three had already closed the door and walked over to me, saying, "Brother, after tonight, I will let you reunite with that female ghost." His words came out with a strained expression.
The candlelight cast shadows on his face, making Ghost Old Three look somewhat eerie at that moment.
Finally, the Three Incense Sticks in my hand burned out, and the room was filled with a foul stench. The female corpse continued to imperceptibly suck in this smell. Damn it, was this female corpse about to come back to life?
The red string weakly seemed to sway...
The atmosphere dropped to freezing point. After waiting a little longer, it finally reached midnight.
Yet the Taoist priest still hadn't shown up, which left me feeling truly unsettled.
Ghost Old Three then said, "Brother, please."
This female corpse really seemed like it was about to come back to life. I couldn't help but gasp in shock and slowly stood up. The Taoist would help me; however, he still hadn’t appeared.
Gao Ling naively said, "Ghost Old Three, this is my brother's last request to you. If you push your luck after this, I will make you pay for it."
Ghost Old Three assured him, "Don't worry, this is the last one." After saying that, he urged me again to hurry up and cooperate.
Damn it, I was afraid that if I fulfilled Ghost Old Three's final request, I would end up dead myself.
I stepped one foot into the coffin, and a chill ran through me. You can imagine how it feels for a normal living person to step into a coffin; it would definitely send shivers down your spine and quicken your heartbeat.
I was cautious and incredibly nervous.
I kept telling myself that everything would be fine; it had to be fine. As soon as both of my feet were inside the coffin, suddenly one candle extinguished without warning. I blurted out, "What’s going on?"
"There's nothing, just a strong wind," Ghost Old Three said.
I cursed under my breath; what a load of nonsense. This room was sealed tight—where would the wind come from? I glanced at Ghost Old Three, who told me to stop talking and lie down quickly.
I started to grumble, but eventually lay down. The moment my body pressed against the female corpse, an unimaginable fear washed over me. The cold sensation mixed with a faint decaying smell made every pore in my body feel like it was absorbing terror…
Although this female corpse didn’t seem like one that had been dead for long, I still couldn’t handle it!
As I lay there, the contact between my flesh and the corpse was truly unsettling! Just then, several wooden sticks suddenly shot out from the coffin. Damn it! In an instant, I was trapped. I never expected there would be mechanisms inside the coffin.
Seeing this, Gao Ling tried to speak up, but after just a few words, his voice vanished. What the hell? Could it be that Ghost Old Three had done something to him?
I panicked and shouted his name, but received no response. It was at that moment that something suddenly bit down on my earlobe…
