Living Funeral
Gao Ling was quick and decisive this time.
In the afternoon, the Funeral Car arrived, accompanied by a middle-aged man who was as thin as a Bamboo Pole.
Gao Ling clearly knew this person and called out, "Brother Fan, you're here! This time, I thought of you first for this business."
I watched as the two greeted each other, and Gao Ling handed over all the money he had received to Brother Fan.
Then he exchanged a few words with The Deceased's Mother before following the Funeral Car.
After seeing the Funeral Car leave, Gao Ling let out a long sigh and said, "The corpse has blood flowing from its brow; it was scratched by a Black Cat. Moreover, this corpse was strangled by a ghost. The combination of both is simply evil!"
Gao Ling had almost no hesitation in handing over this lucrative job.
Listening to Gao Ling's words, I asked, "Is it really okay for you to do that?"
Gao Ling chuckled a few times and replied, "If you want to make money, you have to pay some price."
With that, Gao Ling didn't dwell on it any longer and turned to me, asking, "Have you thought it over? Do you want me to help you deal with that Urn?"
I replied that I didn't need it.
Gao Ling said, "Carrying around a ticking time bomb—it's surprising you can still sleep at night."
Soon night fell. Around seven o'clock, I returned after eating outside with the Urn on my back.
Gao Ling was busy playing a mobile game.
Not long after, Gao Ling's phone rang. She answered the call, and even from several meters away, I could hear the roar of the voice on the other end.
Gao Ling's expression darkened, but she still forced a smile and said, "Fan Ge, I really didn't see it at the time! It was a misunderstanding, truly a misunderstanding. I'm coming over now."
After hanging up, Gao Ling said, "Damn it, I've been found out. I need to go check it out. Are you coming?"
This matter should be shared between Gao Ling and me.
I hesitated for a moment before agreeing.
Gao Ling added, "That damn Zhao Fan, when did his eyesight get so good?" She was still a bit angry.
I remained silent, but I felt nervous.
Just then, my phone beeped with a text message notification.
I looked at the number; since it was saved in my contacts, I immediately recognized the name Zhang Xun. I opened the message and saw that it read: Wang Kun has a problem; the body incident is related to him.
I was stunned. I stared at the message in a daze. Wang Kun was Old Wang's name.
What was going on? I wondered. A few seconds later, I replied with a message asking what had happened.
The reply came quickly: Maybe you are just the most suitable scapegoat.
Upon reading those words, my scalp went numb. A scapegoat? Who was I supposed to take the fall for? I wanted to call and clarify, but the message indicated that the phone was turned off.
My fingers trembled as I tried to type a response, but I hadn't even finished one message when I received a call. The caller ID showed it was Old Wang.
I pressed the answer button, and Old Wang spoke to me in an anxious voice, "Something's happened with Fei." There was a sense of urgency in his tone.
I waited for him to continue.
Old Wang said, "It's all my fault for mistaking the person. Zhang Xun actually used a corpse to refine Corpse Oil, and I even saw him drinking blood from a dead person."
I was at a loss for words.
I asked, "So what’s happening now?"
"The grave has been dug up," Old Wang replied.
What on earth is going on? Why are both of them reaching out to me at almost the same time? Old Wang continued, "Remember! If Zhang Xun asks you for an Urn, you must not give it to him. I'm dealing with this mess over here, but I'll try to come find you as soon as I can."
The call ended abruptly.
I felt restless and distracted. What exactly had happened? Had Zhang Xun and Old Wang fallen out? Did they have some conflict that led to mutual accusations?
Zhang Xun drinking blood from the dead?
After a moment, I received a short video on my phone. I clicked to play it, and immediately saw Zhang Xun crouching in front of a corpse. The key detail was that his hands were covered in blood, and there were bloodstains at the corners of his mouth. He looked somewhat pale.
My heart raced… fear gripped me tightly.
Just then, Gao Ling stepped on the gas, accelerating. The wind rushed in through the window, and I felt completely disoriented.
What is going on? Things seemed to be getting more complicated by the minute.
"What's on your mind? Hurry up and get out of the car."
"We're here!" I snapped back to reality.
After getting out, I took a quick look around. There were a few temporary activity cabins, clearly indicating that this place was a cremation site, a 'Black Workshop.'
This godforsaken place was deserted and quite remote.
Gao Ling stepped forward, forcing a smile as he pulled out a pack of cigarettes. "Fan Ge, I'm really sorry. Have a smoke to calm down."
However, Fan Ge, who was as thin as a bamboo pole, clearly wasn't one to be easily swayed. He outright refused Gao Ling's offer.
"Gao Ling, are you trying to set me up?" he said.
Gao Ling quickly backtracked. "Fan Ge, you're joking! How could I dare?" He softened his tone and added, "How about I handle this body today?"
Fan Ge replied that it was necessary and told him to hurry up and take care of it.
It was obvious that Fan Ge sensed something was off about the body. Anyone involved in funerals knows that a blind person's body shouldn't be moved.
But I knew very well that this body couldn't be burned.
I suggested, "Why don't we just bury the body instead? We'll cover the cost of the coffin." After a pause, I continued, "That way, you can still make some money off the coffin."
At this point, there was no other option. I had developed a strong aversion to burning bodies.
Fan Ge thought for a moment and realized this arrangement could work for both parties. However, greed got the better of him; he sold me a plot for the grave at a bargain price of three thousand.
Damn it! This area was clearly a mass grave; we were practically in the countryside. Burying someone was just digging a hole!
I couldn't be bothered anymore, so I transferred the money to Brother Fan right on the spot. After receiving the payment, Brother Fan helped me deal with the body.
At this point, Gao Ling was also feeling uneasy.
Before long, we buried the body. True to his nature, Brother Fan made sure to give me a fake urn to take back as proof.
After burying the body, we burned some Joss Paper.
Gao Ling and I then left, but Gao Ling was sweating profusely at that moment.
Gao Ling said, "This guy is truly heartless; he even dares to burn living people."
I replied to Gao Ling, "Then why did you provoke him?" I knew Gao Ling must have been thinking about dealing with Zhao Fan but ended up getting exposed.
After driving for a while, Gao Ling stopped the car. This money couldn't come from me.
I was already broke, so I didn't push it further.
Once the transfer was complete, we sat in the car catching our breath. Just then, I noticed a girl standing not far in front of the car. The moment she lifted her head, I saw blood streaming from her eyes, and my heart raced into my throat.
My breathing became rapid; I felt a chill run down my spine and shouted, "Gao Ling, did you see that?"
Gao Ling asked, "See what?"
I said, "There's a girl up ahead with blood flowing from her eyes."
Gao Ling replied, "Are you too nervous? I don't see anything!"
I rubbed my eyes a few times and when I lowered my hands again, there was indeed no one there.
The car continued driving until it reached the area. As soon as I got out and took a few steps, a black dog started barking at me.
It was already close to eleven-thirty.
I glanced at the black dog and quickly noticed something was off; it seemed to have no eyes... At first, I thought I was mistaken.
So, I used my phone's flashlight to take a closer look. Normally, animals' eyes shine in the dark, but when I shone the flashlight on this black dog, I saw that where its eyes should be were just two black holes.
Damn it, it really has no eyes! I was startled and suddenly felt an urge to run away.
Gao Ling squatted down, pretending to pick up stones in an attempt to scare the dog away.
"It's just a stray dog," Gao Ling said.
I gasped heavily; that dog really seemed to have no eyes...
