Living Funeral
I winced in pain, almost unable to suppress a cry.
Old Wang pressed down for several seconds, and instinctively, I swatted his hand away.
I said, somewhat annoyed, "What are you doing?"
Old Wang looked at me with curiosity and said, "Aren't you curious why they all had incidents, yet you were the only one who didn't?"
After he said that, an inexplicable chill ran through me.
Earlier, when Old Wang was talking about the corpse on the phone, his tone had been tense. The deaths of Brother Li and the others must be related to that corpse.
We had all been there when the body was moved yesterday.
The other four had encountered trouble, yet I was the only one who hadn’t. That was indeed strange.
Moreover, I hadn’t noticed a thing about the commotion caused by Fatty Zhang last night. Was I really that exhausted to have slept so soundly?
I pondered for a moment but couldn’t come to a conclusion. I glanced at Old Wang and found him looking at me with a puzzled expression.
I thought to myself, surely Old Wang doesn’t suspect me of being the murderer.
Gasping for breath, I followed up on Old Wang's previous question and asked, "Why is that?"
Old Wang shook his head, not continuing further.
When we reached the dormitory entrance, Old Wang did not rush inside. Instead, he first lit three incense sticks and placed them in a black incense burner.
Old Wang squatted down and asked me to burn some joss paper. I took out my lighter, not daring to hesitate. After burning the joss paper, we waited for the three incense sticks to finish burning. To my surprise, they burned in a pattern of two short and one long. This was considered very ominous; if the incense burned this way, it meant bad luck.
Could something terrible still happen?
Would there be more deaths? Damn it, four out of the five people I had come into contact with were now dead. If there were to be another death, then wouldn’t I be next?
I suddenly felt a suffocating sensation wash over me like a tidal wave.
Old Wang's expression also grew more serious.
I couldn’t help but ask, “What’s going on?”
Old Wang remained outside, not entering the house. The three incense sticks had not yet extinguished when he reached out and snapped them in half.
Yet Old Wang still wouldn’t go inside.
The sunlight gradually shifted direction, casting shadows that made my surroundings darker.
Old Wang called me downstairs and said, “Fei, did you keep the ashes from that corpse last night?”
I thought for a moment and replied, “It seems we haven’t packed them up yet.”
Old Wang was sweating profusely, his forehead glistening with beads of cold sweat. He hurriedly said to me, "You need to get it ready right now. Once it's set up, make sure not to let the Urn fall, understand? I have something to take care of, but I'll come by tonight. Just wait here and don't wander off."
Without waiting for my response, Old Wang rushed to his car and sped away.
I was left standing there in a daze when my phone suddenly buzzed. I glanced at the message and saw it was from Old Wang.
He urged me to hurry and reminded me again not to let the Urn fall.
Panic began to set in, but I had no other choice. I made my way to the Cremation Room. The Yin Qi inside was already heavy, and stepping in only intensified the eerie feeling. The dim light made it hard to see clearly as I took out an Urn and started preparing it.
Just then, I felt as if someone was watching me from behind.
I turned around and scanned the room, but found myself alone. I thought maybe I was just imagining things; after all, it was broad daylight—surely even ghosts wouldn't dare show themselves!
Holding the Urn in my hands, I suddenly heard a faint sobbing sound, like someone swallowing hard.
My heart raced, and I felt a chill run down my spine as every pore on my body opened up to absorb the fear.
I looked around frantically, frozen in place. My hands were cold, and it felt like the Urn was trembling in my grip.
I called out, "Is anyone there?"
After that sound fell, there was no response. I was stunned for a few seconds, my soul nearly leaving my body from fright. Once I regained my senses, I hurriedly ran out of the Cremation Room.
I found a spot where the sunlight was strong and stood there, but I still felt cold.
At that moment, I was truly terrified. My hands trembled, yet I dared not let go of the Urn. I stood there until the sunlight disappeared.
However, Old Wang still hadn't returned. I glanced at the time; it was already past six in the evening.
With no other choice, I took out my phone and called Old Wang. But just as the call connected, a shadow appeared before me, drifting through the window from inside the room...
My heart nearly leaped out of my throat. I wanted to run, but I realized I had no strength to escape.
Old Wang's voice came through the phone: "Just wait a few minutes; I'll be right there."
I stood frozen in place, feeling like time stretched on endlessly! I didn't even know how I managed to endure it. With my eyes closed, I dared not look at anything. Then suddenly, a hand touched my back.
I was completely dumbfounded...
A chill ran down my spine, and the Urn slipped from my grasp, about to hit the ground.
Suddenly, a young man extended his leg and caught the Urn on his foot.
Old Wang gasped in surprise but then sighed in relief when he saw the young man catch it. "Thank goodness it's okay."
Once I regained my composure, the weight on my heart lifted. I said, "Old Wang, why was there no sound at all? You nearly scared me to death."
I was a bit angry.
Before Old Wang could respond, the young man said to me, "Lift the Urn."
I glanced at the young man. He had phoenix eyes, slender eyebrows, and a high nose bridge. His bangs fell just above his eyebrows, giving him a somewhat feminine appearance.
But his voice clearly indicated he was a man.
I thought to myself, can't you pick it up yourself since you have no hands? However, I didn’t argue and reached out to lift the Urn.
It seemed the young man sensed my confusion and said, "Take care of your own things."
I was still in shock.
Yet at that moment, I felt as if a pair of eyes were watching me. It was an unsettling feeling.
Old Wang introduced me, saying, "This is my friend, Zhang Xun."
I looked at Old Wang and then at Zhang Xun. The two of them seemed to be at least forty years apart in age; I wondered how they became friends.
"Where's the body?" Zhang Xun asked.
I replied, "Follow me." As I went upstairs, I glanced around nervously, fearing any lurking demons or monsters might attach themselves to me.
Once we reached my room upstairs, I was taken aback because Fat Zhang's quilt was wrapped up again.
I thought to myself, could it be that he has risen from the dead?
Old Wang and Zhang Xun didn’t know, but I did! The blanket had been thrown off by me earlier.
Zhang Xun was quite bold; he stepped forward and pulled the blanket away. But when the blanket was lifted, both Old Wang and I were left in shock.
Old Wang asked me, "Where's the body?"
His question indicated that he had seen Fat Zhang's body lying on the bed before.
I felt my scalp tingle with panic. "I don’t know! I went downstairs and didn’t come back up."
Zhang Xun reacted quickly and asked, "What about the other three bodies?"
I hadn’t touched the other three bodies in the adjacent room; I only saw the thick blanket piled on top.
When we got to the next room, as soon as we pulled back the three winter blankets, we immediately discovered three incredibly stiff bodies—Brother Li and two others.
With these three bodies present, the room still seemed relatively normal.
But where had Fat Zhang gone? I could almost guarantee that Fat Zhang was definitely dead. Could it be that he had already risen from the dead?
Was that shadow I saw earlier Fat Zhang?
My mind was racing with wild thoughts.
Old Wang's face was incredibly grim. Moreover, one of the bodies had actually disappeared.
Old Wang then asked me, "Is Zhang the Fatty dead?"
I glanced at the old man and replied, "Yes, he is definitely dead."
"And where's the body?"
Damn it, how would I know! I'm not a fortune teller; how could I possibly know where the body is!
At that moment, Zhang Xun spoke up, "We can't wait any longer."
