Chapter 4: Dancing with Demons
Indeed, the Withered Glory Guqin was quite plain, resembling a simple piece of dead wood with seven strings stretched across it, devoid of any exquisite patterns and marred by numerous cracks. It seemed that any young person would not be fond of such an ancient instrument.
However, Lian Yun was instantly captivated. After gently caressing it, he began practicing the basic techniques.
After playing a few times, Lian Yun smiled with delight.
Yet when he looked up, he saw the helpless expressions on Azure Drift and Meng Yixuan's faces. There was even a hint of regret in Meng Yixuan's eyes.
Though the sound was beautiful, it carried a sense of weariness that did not seem fitting for someone as youthful as Lian Yun.
Unaware of this, Lian Yun felt a bit embarrassed and asked, "But where did I play it wrong?"
"Ah!" Azure Drift sighed heavily.
It was one thing to play inappropriately; it was another to remain oblivious after doing so. This indicated that Lian Yun's heart was even more burdened. It felt as if being punched was painful, but being cut was even worse, leading one to become numb to the pain of the punch.
Women are inherently emotional, and especially for someone skilled in music, their feelings are even more delicate. Meng Yixuan's eyes were reddened with tears, filled with heartache, leaving Lian Yun momentarily at a loss for words.
Azure Drift quickly regained composure and said, "Watch closely. Since this isn't a formal lesson, I'll only play three times. How much you can remember depends on your own ability."
"I understand," Lian Yun replied sincerely as he rose and cupped his hands in respect before sitting back down.
With a gentle chime...
Lian Yun was surprised to see a long needle fly out from Azure Drift's strings. This needle, formed from spirit and Spiritual Energy, danced freely in the air.
Before long, the needle suddenly vanished into Azure Drift's body.
To be honest, Lian Yun had been completely captivated by that needle and had not paid attention to Azure Drift's playing at all.
However, he understood instantly. The moment the needle flew from the strings, he realized that this so-called Dancing with Demons did not require any sheet music; it could change according to one's mood and state of mind.
He also understood the reason behind the flying needle.
After finishing the performance of Azure Drift, Lian Yun sat cross-legged and closed his eyes in contemplation.
The essence of Dancing with Demons lies in three points. The first is intention. With a woman's sensitivity and the Qin Art's rich emotional depth, there are bound to be countless emotions to evoke, which is akin to summoning a multitude of demons.
In this regard, Lian Yun could fully substitute his own Sword Intent, not only avoiding any shortcomings but even surpassing them.
The second point is vibration. Sound itself propagates through the vibration of air. Lian Yun had observed the battles in Insect Emperor III and, having already gained some understanding, he found that his control over vibrations was far more profound than that of Azure Drift.
The third point is the combination of intention and spiritual power, which is perhaps the only area where Lian Yun felt somewhat lacking.
Typically, whether in battle or cultivation, intention can control spiritual power, but it usually takes the form of wrapping—like a hand holding an object. The essence of Dancing with Demons lies in the fusion of intention and spiritual power.
The greatest advantage of this approach is its minimal consumption since both intention and spiritual power can be recycled. This effect was what Lian Yun valued most because it felt as if one were drawing from the external world.
Lian Yun could place a portion of his intention and spiritual power externally and then replenish it, thereby invisibly increasing his reserves of spiritual power and Mental Power. This would indirectly enhance his combat strength and endurance in battle.
However, the key to this lay in the music itself. The sound must propagate widely to achieve such an effect; it wouldn't do to play continuously while moving around.
This was perhaps the biggest drawback of Dancing with Demons.
Yet, none of this was what Lian Yun cared about most; what truly mattered to him was the ability to freely control a myriad of intentions.
This state opened a door for him—a gateway to truly begin creating the Ten Thousand Sword Technique.
In a sense, Dancing with Demons could be seen as an alternative sword technique, one that suited Lian Yun perfectly, as if it were tailor-made for him.
Not only was it extremely fitting, but its timing was also impeccable.
Finally, the fusion of consciousness and spiritual power was not difficult; it felt merely like a sensation. Previously unaware of such a concept, he now understood it and felt it—making it no longer a challenge.
Moreover, the method was not singularly simple. It could involve wrapping from the inside out, allowing spiritual power to permeate into consciousness or wrapping first before penetrating into the depths of spiritual power.
In this respect, it might significantly enhance the power of his sword-drawing technique; however, Lian Yun chose not to consider that for now.
He did not act outlandishly but instead calmly experimented within himself several times—wrapping spiritual power with consciousness and then allowing consciousness to infiltrate into spiritual power. After gaining some insight and feeling that he could control it, he slowly opened his eyes and raised his hand to play the piano.
A light chime echoed as a White Greatsword sprang forth from the strings of Withered Glory, only to plunge directly into the ground ahead, vanishing without a trace and unable to be retrieved.
At the same time, losing both Mental Power and spiritual energy caused Lian Yun's complexion to pale slightly. However, he paid no attention to it, instead wearing a thoughtful expression, completely oblivious to Azure Drift's astonished demeanor.
This reaction was not surprising; Lian Yun already possessed all the factors necessary to play Dancing with Demons. It felt as if he were someone destined to be a ruler, merely waiting for the throne. Once he sat upon it, he would instantly become a King of his era.
It was as if it were written in fate.
Yet, Lian Yun was still a novice at playing the piano. Although he had an innate ability for control, mastering the delicate nuances required in playing was still beyond him. On his second attempt, while the White Greatsword did take flight, it veered off course.
It wasn't until his third attempt that he managed to control the White Greatsword to spin around him. However, the Greatsword danced awkwardly and stumbled about, lacking any fluidity.
Azure Drift remained in shock; if one were unaware of Lian Yun's status as a beginner who had merely glanced at the technique once, they would never believe it.
Lian Yun himself remained focused on playing. The ability to make the Greatsword dance meant that he could progress further. Even if his movements were not smooth, it posed little issue for him; he simply needed to gradually enhance his control skills.
In less than twenty minutes, the Greatsword was already circling around Lian Yun in a circular motion. At that moment, Lian Yun flicked his fingers and summoned a second White Greatsword, which wobbled and stumbled into the air before beginning to spin.
