Chapter 09 Bet
Although most humans prefer to use the Ghosts of their kind as Ghost Slaves, it cannot be denied that the types of Ghost Slaves are truly diverse. However, there is only one type of Ghost Slave that can serve the purpose of ten, and that is the legendary Ghost Mother of Nine Sons.
The legends surrounding the Ghost Mother of Nine Sons vary; for instance, the Demon Mother gives birth to Nine Offspring in the morning and devours them at night. However, in reality, the situation with the Ghost Mother of Nine Sons is quite different—it is a product born from a single corpse yet possessing ten lives.
If the Ghost Mother of Nine Sons takes on an animal form, it is somewhat more acceptable, even enviable. But if it takes on a human form, it becomes something that even the lowest beings would dread.
It is important to understand that Spirits are generally considered to be naturally born entities. This means that beings conceived through artificial means, such as artificial insemination, cannot become Spirits after death.
Thus, being able to conceive nine offspring is an exceedingly rare occurrence.
Furthermore, signing a contract with the Ghost Mother of Nine Sons requires special conditions.
Due to having Nine Offspring, the Demon Mother's protective instincts are immense; the Nine Offspring can also be revived within her womb. Therefore, under normal circumstances, ordinary people cannot approach the Ghost Mother of Nine Sons because she will stop at nothing to protect her children.
However, there is one exception: close relatives.
Thus, if Qin Jiuwang possesses a Ghost Mother of Nine Sons and she is not in animal form, it essentially means that his Ghost Mother of Nine Sons is either his mother and siblings or his wife and children, or perhaps his daughter and grandchildren. It could never be a sister, younger sister, or nephew.
Typically, having one's own Spirit as a slave signifies a deep bond. However, the situation with the Ghost Mother of Nine Sons is different.
As long as the Demon Mother exists, the Nine Offspring can continuously revive; however, the Demon Mother must endure inhuman suffering akin to having her soul torn apart.
Even in a close bond, any person with a shred of humanity would likely not wish to see their loved ones in such a state.
Yet today they entered the Year Beast Secret Realm—a place known for its bountiful rewards—so it seemed there was no imminent danger in Qin Jiuwang participating in battle.
However, judging by Insect Emperor's attitude, it was clear that Qin Jiuwang had done many things with his Ghost Mother of Nine Sons—so much so that even this Peerless Monarch was well aware of it.
Lian Yun's gaze became complicated; it felt like someone else's family matters were beyond her concern, yet she was unwilling to witness such circumstances.
On this side, Qin Emperor paid no mind to Insect Emperor's attitude and instead laughed: "Insect Emperor finds this amusing; if it were truly so, why would this emperor have only a handful of victories?"
Another characteristic of the Ghost Mother of Nine Sons is that the strength of the Nine Offspring must be one level lower than that of the Demon Mother; otherwise, the Demon Mother would be unable to revive them. In other words, if Qin Jiuwang's Demon Mother among his Ghost Mother of Nine Sons is a Monarch, then the Nine Offspring can only be Kings.
Even if they are all at the Peak of Kings level, the Nine Offspring cannot be treated as nine Monarch-level combatants.
The one leading the Peerless Monarch was essentially someone with the strength of a Monarch. When facing the Ghost Slave, they should also possess Monarch-level combat power.
"Hmph~~" The Insect Emperor snorted coldly, unwilling to engage.
However, the Qin Emperor clearly had a special purpose and did not mind. Instead, he looked at the Old Daoist and smiled, saying, "It’s rare to meet both of you today, especially with the New Year’s Secret Manual about to open. How about we have a little wager?"
"Hehe! It’s not often that the Qin Emperor shows such interest. Mei Mou has no objections, but what shall be the stakes of this wager?"
"And what about you, Insect Emperor?"
Although the Insect Emperor did not like the Qin Emperor, he seemed to be someone who enjoyed gambling and was somewhat tempted. However, he was short on funds and chose not to respond.
But the Qin Emperor smiled slightly and said, "Let us three use the ranking from this Beast of the Year Secret Manual as our victory criteria. The prize will be a Three Thousand High-Quality gift box. The winner takes all from the other two."
"A Three Thousand High-Quality gift box is nearly equivalent to what one would obtain from a secret realm. Since the Qin Emperor is so interested, Mei shall gladly participate."
"Hmph~~ That’s easy enough. You two have known each other for many years and are well acquainted. I only just met these two kids today and have no idea how strong they are; how can we compare?" It was clear that this was a subtle thought from the Insect Emperor.
"Well! Isn’t this white-haired youth bound to be in the top ten?"
"Just top ten; he’s probably better than your two companions!"
The Qin Emperor seemed insistent on comparing with the Insect Emperor and continued without contemplation, "Then how about we set two thousand as the wager?"
"Hmph!" The Insect Emperor showed no appreciation for that.
The Qin Emperor was slightly displeased now, his tone growing colder as he said, "What do you think would be fair then?"
"You two come from wealthy families and likely possess quite a few Mental Potions. I only have nine; this wager is inherently unfair to me. What difference does it make if I put in two thousand against Three Thousand? You clearly want to take advantage of me without any risk!"
The Insect Emperor was being quite blunt and clearly wanted some Mental Potions.
The Old Daoist looked somewhat helpless while the Qin Emperor's expression darkened slightly. However, it seemed he wanted to put the Insect Emperor in a difficult position once more as he coldly stated, "Then let’s limit it; only nine can be used."
"Hmph~~ We are competing here; there are rankings and rewards involved. Why should we give others an advantage?" This meant he wouldn’t settle until he got something out of the Qin Emperor.
However, this was an open scheme. For both the Old Daoist and the Qin Emperor, it seemed that ranking rewards were more important than those from treasure boxes.
At that moment, the Old Daoist stepped in to ease the tension, smiling as he said, "Usually, even for us, three days and ten stakes in the secret realm would be sufficient. However, now that we have a wager, we will try our best. Still, I believe eleven stakes should be enough. So, Mei, how about lending one stake to the Insect Emperor?"
"Lend? How ridiculous," the Insect Emperor scoffed. Yet, he did not refuse. Instead, he provocatively looked at the Qin Emperor and said, "The bet was proposed by you, Qin Huang. You wouldn't want to borrow one too, would you?"
In truth, both the Insect Emperor and the Old Daoist were well aware of the hidden side of the Qin Emperor. The "lend" mentioned by the Old Daoist was not meant to provoke but rather to avoid offending the narrow-minded Qin Emperor.
If it were a loan, it wouldn't be a loss for the Qin Emperor and would also facilitate this wager.
However, the Insect Emperor was fearless and aimed to take advantage of the situation, insisting on obtaining the Qin Emperor's Mental Potion for free.
To this, the Qin Emperor responded amicably by handing over a vial with a smile, saying, "There is no harm in it."
Though his tone was friendly, it carried an underlying bitterness.
Yet, the Insect Emperor seemed to be someone who thrived on provoking others. After getting what he wanted, he feigned innocence and said, "Well, Old Daoist has a point. But since you cannot use it yourselves, it can be given to your two juniors instead. I still end up at a loss here. However, since you are so sincere, I won't disturb your enjoyment."
"Since it's a bet, I won't take advantage of you either; I'll put in Three Thousand."
