Chapter 9: Frenzied Harvest and the Arrival of the Fierce Soldier
In the past, Lian Yun possessed twenty Ghost Slaves, but he did not merge all twenty into a single Ghost Battle Body. Instead, he used Big Head as the core and combined it with any nine Ghost Slaves.
This way, Lian Yun could create countless variations of Ghost Battle Bodies, making them incredibly versatile.
Lian Yun's adaptability to the Ghost Battle Body had reached nearly the pinnacle of the world.
Even after three years without using the Ghost Battle Body in combat, his adaptability had not diminished significantly.
Thus, Lian Yun ran while swiftly adapting. As he became more familiar with controlling the Ghost Battle Body, the synergy among Big Head and the other six Spirits improved as well.
Especially Sword Mountain, who exhibited an exceptionally strong adaptability, moving forward with great agility.
After running nearly a mile, the entire Ghost Battle Body became much smoother.
This might be related to the special care provided by Lian Yun and the other six Spirits, but if Sword Mountain lacked a certain level of adaptability—such as not knowing how to adjust himself or rejecting others' adjustments—then no amount of accommodation would help.
Before long, Lian Yun received a mental message from Sword Mountain.
"Boss, can you let me take a turn? I feel like if we merge again, I can do even better."
This essentially indicated that his adaptability surpassed his ability to adjust himself. Naturally, Lian Yun had no objections; he released the Ghost Battle Body and then reformed it once more.
This time, Lian Yun's Ghost Battle Body was slightly shorter, yet he could clearly sense that even without the protective outer layer formed by darkness, this latest Ghost Battle Body would not easily collapse.
"Hey hey! As expected of my little brother," Big Head chuckled, feeling a sense of relief.
Lian Yun also smiled slightly but did not immediately turn to attack the Spirit behind him; instead, he continued moving forward.
After adapting once more to the Ghost Battle Body, he walked for a while until he reached an open area with no buildings for miles. Only then did he turn around and stand still.
A thunderous roar completely drowned out the Howling of Ghosts and Wolves from the countless Spirits ahead of Lian Yun.
The Spirits closest to Lian Yun were mostly those that were not attached to any objects. They were excellent targets for capturing as Ghost Slaves.
Though somewhat unexpected, Lian Yun did not find it strange. After all, Spirits attach themselves to objects primarily to protect their Spirit Bonds. As long as the Spirit Bond remains intact, even if injured or disabled, a Spirit can recover or regenerate through the Spirit Bond.
However, whether iron or stone, before an Evil Spirit, they would be easily sliced through like tofu. Faced with the Evil Spirit Tide, many Spirits abandoned their attachments to objects in order to escape more quickly.
Yet, the Spirits charging at the front were not necessarily the strongest. Most Spirits were cunning and treacherous, believing that being part of a group would provide greater safety.
Lian Yun paid no mind to this and dispelled the Ghost Battle Body. Then, wielding Wu Tai, his Spirit Power made Wu Tai appear as if it had taken on a phantom form several meters long.
In just a few flashes, several Spirits closest to Lian Yun were severely injured. Big Head and Sword Mountain formed one group, while Three Spirits formed another, and the lone Black Capital revealed its fangs as they scattered and began their battle.
Only Chen Er Gou rushed forward with an excited yet anxious expression, grabbing a severely injured Spirit and diving into Lian Yun's body. He emerged only to grab another severely injured Spirit and dive back in again.
Although Chen Er Gou was at the same peak level as Big Head and the others, he lacked combat experience. In terms of strength, he was several tiers below Three Spirits; thus, he could only act as a porter for now.
Despite Chen Er Gou giving his all, his speed was still insufficient.
As soon as Lian Yun emerged, the Three Spirits each held a Spirit in front of him, and the situation improved slightly.
However, the scene that followed was rather grim.
Lian Yun was engaged in constant battle, while Big Head, Sword Mountain, the Three Spirits, and Hei were continuously grabbing Spirits to bring closer to Lian Yun. Yet, Lian Yun seemed to be motionless; it was as if countless ghostly claws were emerging from his body. With each pair of ghostly claws that sprouted from him, they could seize two desperate Spirits and drag them into Lian Yun's being.
It felt as though Lian Yun's body was an endless abyss, perpetually devouring Spirits.
This scene went unnoticed by outsiders, preventing any panic from arising. However, the Spirits surrounding Lian Yun appeared to have seen a ghost; they scattered in extreme fear, some even fleeing toward the Evil Spirit Tide behind them, truly panicking without a clear direction.
Yet, as the Spirits deliberately avoided Lian Yun's "team," the speed at which Lian Yun's team captured Spirits dropped dramatically. It wasn't until ghostly claws emerged from Lian Yun's body and swiped through the air without catching anything that Chen Er Gou finally appeared, looking around in confusion.
Lian Yun had no particularly good strategies either; he dared not approach the depths of the Evil Tide. If he got too close, his body could be invaded by the dense mass of Spirits.
Despite possessing Sword Intent and having a Box within him that rendered him unafraid of Spirit invasion, any Spirit other than contracted ones would still have some effect on his body if they entered.
Inside the Evil Tide, even a moment's hesitation could lead to falling deeper into the Evil Spirit Tide, which would undoubtedly result in dire consequences. Therefore, Lian Yun had no intention of taking such risks.
Thus, he could only continue retreating while swiftly moving sideways to pursue some of the fleeing Spirits.
However, after moving laterally for a while, he would find himself back in his original position. He intended to return to the edge of Fengdu to avoid straying too far from Zhou Tong and the others.
Although Big Head and the others fought individually, they remained at a certain distance outside of Lian Yun's reach, providing a sort of special protection.
Before long, it seemed that the Spirits within the Evil Tide had figured out Lian Yun's pattern. They began to withdraw in one direction while both sides continued to retreat. By the time Lian Yun returned to his original position, there were hardly any Spirits within nearly two hundred meters on either side of him.
To gain something, one must move a greater distance.
At this moment, Lian Yun had been fighting for nearly half an hour and had passed the location where three Ten-Person Teams had been defeated.
He had collected nearly a thousand Spirits, which was quite a significant haul.
Lian Yun understood the importance of knowing when to stop, but just as he was about to call Big Head and the others back to his side, he noticed two Spirits rushing towards him, their foreheads adorned with mysterious clouds.
"I, Zhao Jinlong, wish to follow my lord until death."
"I, Zhao Jinhui, wish to follow my lord until death."
Zhao Jinlong and Zhao Jinhui were not particularly tall, but they were exceptionally strong. Beyond their Ghost Bodies, there was an intermittent shimmer of Armor surrounding them.
This situation indicated that they were not ordinary generals or Warriors; rather, they were something even rarer.
They were Fierce Soldiers.
