Chapter 71: The Three Major Landlords on the Periphery
"Wait a moment, you can only demonstrate the power and speed of a top-tier expert!" Zhou Tong's expression was serious and brooked no dissent.
Lian Yun had no objections; instead, he nodded obediently.
His experience in Fengdu was limited, so he could only follow Zhou Tong's instructions.
Soon, the two arrived at a Cockroach Demon cave and lured the Cockroach Demon out.
Although they frightened a few pursuing Spirits, their speed was limited, and neither Lian Yun nor Zhou Tong could match that of the Cockroach Demon. Thus, this was their first cooperative battle!
They fought while retreating. Along the way, Lian Yun couldn't help but say, "You can give it a try. Even without using the power of a king, as long as the shockwave is accurate, I can kill this Evil Spirit in an instant!"
However, Zhou Tong ignored Lian Yun.
Though the battle lasted only a short while, Zhou Tong still recognized Lian Yun's combat abilities.
Zhou Tong felt that "battle-hardened" was insufficient to describe Lian Yun's skills; rather, "tempered through countless trials" seemed more fitting.
A sixteen-year-old boy described as tempered through countless trials? That thought made Zhou Tong feel somewhat awkward.
But inevitably, he thought about Lian Yun's diligence.
Still, he said nothing and led Lian Yun to draw the Cockroach Demon toward another Centipede Demon cave.
After inciting hostility between the two Evil Spirits, Zhou Tong quietly retreated with Lian Yun and quickly returned to the underground garage of the villa where everyone was hiding!
Fengdu Night was definitely not just this! However, having attracted the attention of the Spirits, Zhou Tong decided not to take Lian Yun to continue 'observing' Fengdu Night.
Once inside the villa, Xue Zhi Gui immediately went out, presumably to erase any traces of Lian Yun and Zhou Tong's return!
Zhou Tong did not speak to Lian Yun, instead focusing on self-adjustment and cultivation.
Lian Yun, however, was not concerned about Zhou Tong's silence; he was reflecting on the events he had witnessed during the Fengdu Night.
His emotions were complex, tinged with an inexplicable discomfort.
To be honest, Lian Yun had encountered many villains before, individuals who committed heinous and cruel acts. It was Lin Beiyan and Lian Cheng who had taken him to witness such things.
But what he had seen back then were mostly bullies who preyed on the weak. Tonight, however, he witnessed a team that would betray one another for survival, willing to harm those they once trusted in order to save their own lives.
This was a facet of humanity that was difficult to articulate.
Lian Yun could not comprehend this mindset, yet he understood that such mentalities existed among humans.
Perhaps it was due to the effects of the Explosive Ascension Pill that left his body feeling hollow. After a night of quiet meditation, Lian Yun fully absorbed the potency of the Blood Ginseng he had consumed. Although he felt some 'flesh' growing within him, it did not satisfy his lingering sense of emptiness.
However, now that he was in Fengdu and under Zhou Tong's guidance, Lian Yun felt confident that acquiring more Spiritwood would not be a problem.
The next morning, as Zhou Tong and the others awoke, Zhou Tong nodded at Meng Zhigui, who immediately went outside.
Seeing Zhou Tong glance at him, Chen Tao understood and explained to Lian Yun, "There are three major hidden teams around Fengdu; we are one of them, along with two others."
"Our three teams divide the outer area of Fengdu into four regions: southeast, southwest, northeast, and northwest. Each team occupies one of the three regions while the northern area serves as Fengdu's exit—considered shared territory where we take turns occupying."
"Since our territory faces the South Side directly, we have an advantage over the other two teams; we can utilize the northern area one extra time each rotation."
Upon hearing this, Lian Yun frowned slightly.
If the northern side of Fengdu is the exit for the human race, then the South Side is clearly the exit for the Demon Clan, where Spirits must be densely distributed! Movement would undoubtedly be very inconvenient!
Although there are fewer humans in the South Side, which could reduce the chances of being attacked by others, the distance from the north is too great to engage in reckless battles. Once injured, escape would be extremely difficult!
Moreover, with the vast distance between the north and south, once Zhou Tong's team arrives at the north, the other two teams can freely invade the South Side. Zhou Tong's team would find it hard to know this, and even if they did, there would be nothing they could do about it!
Additionally, since there are more humans in the north, there would naturally be fewer Evil Spirits. Lian Yun could see that Zhou Tong's team was not primarily focused on killing and looting, so whether in the South Side or the north, there were not many benefits for Zhou Tong's team!
If Zhou Tong intended to recruit team members in the north, Lian Yun thought that was unlikely!
In Lian Yun's view, in Fengdu, a team of two or three people would be most suitable. One person attacks, one stands guard, and one is always ready to provide support!
Any more would draw attention and easily lead to mistakes.
Of course, this is based on Lian Yun's own physical capabilities and strength. However, even with Zhou Tong's current five-member team, that already counted as full.
Thus, Lian Yun did not believe that Zhou Tong intended to stay longer in the west to recruit team members.
However, with Zhou Tong's intelligence, how could he possibly make such a decision that offered no benefits?
After thinking it over, Lian Yun could only come up with two reasons!
The first is that since Evil Spirits completely suppress Spirits, the Spiritwood in the South Side should be abundant.
But given Zhou Tong's team's strength, attempting to acquire Spiritwood from there seemed unrealistic.
Therefore, Zhou Tong's true purpose must be to gather information.
Spirits can pass through walls and move much more easily. Even if suppressed by Evil Spirits, they can escape effortlessly. Thus, they can reach many places that are difficult for humans to access; consequently, they must have more information about Fengdu!
Zhou Tong possessed a unique 'radar' ability, which is why he chose to explore both the southern and northern regions—to gather various information from the Demon Clan and the human race.
With this in mind, his intention to infiltrate the inner and central areas of Fengdu became clear.
Understanding this, Yun Suiyi glanced at Zhou Tong before continuing to listen to Chen Tao.
"Under normal circumstances, whenever a new member is added to a team, the other two teams must be notified. This is to avoid unnecessary trouble when encountering 'outsiders.' For instance, if they suddenly meet, it would prevent them from easily attacking each other."
"And if a team member leaves the group, the other two teams also need to be informed to prevent any ambushes against them."
This situation essentially reflects the principle of mutual benefit; if they cooperate, all parties gain, but if they don't, everyone suffers.
After all, while the three teams were quite powerful, they did not dominate the entire perimeter of Fengdu. Within Fengdu itself, having a sufficient number of people could create an advantage and enhance safety.
Thus, many individuals actually operated in groups.
Zhou Tong and the other two teams divided the perimeter of Fengdu into four sections simply to avoid unnecessary conflicts among themselves.
In certain situations, they could even share information and cooperate with one another.
