Chapter 18: Sparring with Lin Xi
Lian Yun was unaware that his three uncles were deeply worried about his future. After entering the Box within himself, he noticed that the Three Spirits had not absorbed much energy, and a trace of spiritual power was leaking from the Ghost Body.
Realizing this, he immediately communicated mentally, "This place is hell for other Spirits! It seems it is of no benefit to you either. Let's wait until my realm has recovered before allowing you to enter."
"Hell? How can this be hell? This is simply our hall! Young Master Yun, please let us stay here!" Ding Tie, Ding Gang, and Ding Lan exclaimed excitedly.
The three siblings then bowed to Big Head and said, "We three siblings pay our respects to our elder brother!"
Among Ghost Slaves, strength did not matter; it was about who arrived first. Thus, the Three Spirits' address was not disputed. However, Big Head scratched his head shyly and said, "Alright, alright! I have brothers and sisters now! I once vowed to protect the elder brother no matter what. Do you all wish to do the same?"
"We are willing to guard Young Master Yun without any complaints!"
"Alright, alright! My good brothers and sisters!"
"In the future, if I cannot protect you all, I would be unworthy of being a son!" With that, Lian Yun returned his focus, unaware that inside the Box, Big Head and the Three Spirits were 'in tears.'
When Lian Yun regained his senses, he felt a sense of melancholy. Looking ahead, his mind seemed to drift far away.
Lin Dong stepped forward, gently stroking his head with a kind smile and said, "Yun'er, do you feel that having us and the ghosts treat you so well makes you feel overwhelmed?"
Lin Xi added, "Yet you know that when you were conspired against by others and ghosts alike, you still chose to stay behind and risk your life to protect a city of ten thousand people. That shows you deserve such affection! Why worry about it?"
Lin Nan said, "You only need to grow up and live like a man in the future; that will be enough to honor your land and your parents!"
Lian Yun forced a smile as he stood up but gazed intently at the Forest of Blades and Spears ahead.
"Go! Let Second Uncle see how much your martial arts have improved in these past three years!" Lin Xi waved her hand. Although there was no wind outside, within the Forest of Blades and Spears, blades flashed fiercely as swords danced around. The ground erupted sporadically with long spears shooting out.
Taking a deep breath to calm himself, Lian Yun stepped forward. The Three Spirits immediately flew out from within him, guarding him from all sides.
This was why Lin Dong wanted Lian Yun's Ghost Group right now; the protection from his own Ghost Slaves was far more comprehensive than that offered by external forces.
However, Lian Yun seemed oblivious as he entered the Forest of Blades and Spears with just a few steps.
On the outside, it appeared that Lian Yun made no significant movements; he merely sidestepped slightly forward or backward to evade the swirling blades coming from all directions. Although he did not look down at the ground, it was as if he had eyes on his feet. With just a few shifts of position, he avoided the spear tips shooting up from below.
Taking a leisurely stroll seemed to be nothing more than that.
However, as he delved deeper, he could no longer maintain such ease.
He was now facing attacks from all directions, both above and below. The sheer volume of these assaults made it seem impossible for anyone to simply dodge them. Thus, Lian Yun's movements became increasingly exaggerated.
At times he would spread his legs wide like a split, at other times he stood on one leg like a rooster, and sometimes he darted about like a startled rabbit. Yet, despite the flamboyance of his actions, the aura he exuded was—
"Oh my! Why does it feel like his martial arts are almost on par with Second Uncle's?" Lin Nan watched with wide eyes, utterly bewildered and unable to comprehend.
Lin Xi rubbed his hands together, brimming with eagerness; his passion for martial arts was ignited.
Lin Dong nodded in commentary: "This is no longer something that can be achieved through mere diligence! Sister's Son is indeed extraordinary; I just wonder how long Yun'er can hold out?"
Unable to contain himself, Lin Xi suddenly dashed into the Forest of Blades and Spears and aimed a palm strike at Lian Yun's shoulder!
Although Lian Yun's movements were grand, he remained quite relaxed, allowing him to listen to Lin Nan and the others outside.
However, Lin Xi's attack caught him somewhat off guard due to the speed at which he appeared. It was as if he could pass through walls like a spirit, coming straight in.
Yet Lian Yun did not panic; he increased his speed and retreated slightly to evade the strike. Then, with a swift roll and twist, he maneuvered behind Lin Xi and struck out with a palm aimed at his back.
But before Lian Yun could successfully land his attack, he felt a gust of ominous wind approaching from behind him, sending a chill down his spine. This was because Lin Xi had not completely vanished from his sight.
Knowing that Second Uncle wanted to gauge his full strength, Lian Yun decided to stop holding back. He unleashed all his power; even before his palm fully extended, he felt himself already behind Lin Xi.
However, Lin Xi was no ordinary Monarch; he seemed entirely unfazed by Lian Yun's speed. With a slight shift, he appeared right behind Lian Yun!
Then between Lian Yun and Lin Xi, one shifted sideways while the other rolled to attack.
Underneath it all, the entire Forest of Blades and Spears was filled with countless figures, resembling ghostly shadows or perhaps suggesting that both Lian Yun and Lin Xi had numerous clones.
Lin Nan watched in astonishment, as if his jaw might drop to the ground.
Meanwhile, Lin Dong and Lin Nan felt excitement but also an inexplicable seriousness and sadness in their gazes.
The evenly matched Lian Yun and Lin Xi seemed to find the combat within the Forest of Blades and Spears too restrictive for their enjoyment. Thus, amidst their fighting, they exited the Forest of Blades and Spears and moved on to the Sand Pit, Shallow Pool, Plum Blossom Poles, and then onto the Rockery where they continued their chase.
As soon as the two stepped out of the Forest of Blades and Spears, Lin Nan's expression changed instantly, becoming more surprised and, above all, shocked.
Because he realized that outside the Forest of Blades and Spears, under the same circumstances as Second Uncle, his cousin's martial arts seemed to overshadow Second Uncle by a notch.
This was somewhat unimaginable; after all, his Second Uncle, Lin Xi, was a true Grandmaster of martial arts, someone whom many Monarchs could not compare to.
Moreover, as soon as they exited the Forest of Blades and Spears, Lian Yun felt that his Second Uncle's attacks had suddenly become extremely fierce and powerful, exuding an aura that left no room for resistance.
However, after three years of relentless battles and with his spiritual energy continuously depleting, if he wanted to win, Lian Yun could only strive for perfection, seeking to maximize his attack effectiveness with the least amount of power. Even now, he could not be considered a Grandmaster of martial arts; he merely had an ability to seize opportunities that was far beyond ordinary people.
Yet this battle, which seemed to give Lian Yun an advantage, was actually deliberately guided by Lin Xi. He intentionally exposed flaws to see if Lian Yun could seize the opportunity.
Although Lian Yun's combat skills were high, his body was weak on the inside. After a short while in battle, his complexion began to pale.
When he truly felt powerless, Lian Yun retreated to Lin Dong's side, signaling the end of the fight.
In contrast to the panting Lian Yun, Lin Xi stood calmly in front of him, his expression seemingly filled with satisfaction and concern.
