I had two minor fractures and, after being startled, needed to stay in the hospital for observation for a few days.
However, on the second day of my hospitalization, Zhang Xincheng's parents suddenly rushed to the hospital with my grandmother to see me.
They brought large bags of gifts, claiming they were there to apologize on behalf of Zhang Xincheng, but their words were clearly aimed at persuading me to drop the charges.
" Xiaxia, your uncle and aunt have always regarded you as their own daughter. This child, Zhang Xincheng, can be impulsive and reckless, but he is still just a kid. You can't let him spend the rest of his life in prison, can you?"
"A kid? He's over thirty and still a kid? Besides, his crime was premeditated; it wasn't impulsive or reckless at all."
As I spoke, I pointed at my injuries, but Zhang Xincheng's mother continued to mumble, "That doesn't mean my son should serve such a long sentence. It's truly cruel and heartless."
"Cruel? He set up my dad and Liang Anna along with me; wasn't that cruel?" I shot back. "Auntie, think about it. If I were your daughter and someone treated me like this, would you still say such things?"
Upon hearing this, Zhang Xincheng's mother immediately became emotional and started crying.
Zhang Xincheng's father maintained a stern expression and kept muttering about "creating karma."
I retorted angrily, "Yes, it's indeed the father's fault if the child is not taught properly. I agree it's creating karma!"
Just then, a strong stench filled the entire ward.
I mimicked Zhang Xincheng's parents, covering my nose and scoffing, "What a smell, it's disgusting. This is a public space."
"Since the old man is paralyzed and can't control himself, as children, we should show more filial piety. Don't you all agree?"
The other patients in the same ward nodded in agreement, and Zhang Xincheng's parents felt embarrassed, hastily pushing their grandmother away.
Later, I learned that Zhang Xincheng's dad had been in a drunk driving accident and ended up paralyzed like his grandmother, destined to spend the rest of his life in bed.
The day after I was discharged from the hospital, I took the initiative to request a meeting with Zhang Xincheng.
In less than half a month, he seemed to have aged ten years, but his eyes still burned with hatred towards me.
"Are you here to laugh at me?"
"Don't dream. You won't get a single cent of that money if you're not married. Now that you've sent me to prison, which man would dare want you? Just wait for a lonely old age; you'll never see that money!"
Hearing this, I genuinely looked down on him.
"Is money really that important to you? Why do you hate me so much? What did I do wrong?"
"Stop pretending. You got close to me, met my parents, and obeyed me just to get married quickly and claim that money, right?"
"I just didn't expect you would break up with me before the wedding. You must have found someone else and wanted to kick me aside!"
"Why do you always think the worst of people? I honestly had no idea that money even existed."
"You're talking nonsense! Why have you been so nice to me? You must have your own motives..."
"Because of love!"
"Because I love you! I truly loved you once, and I was willing to endure everything, even living on scraps, all because of love!"
Zhang Xincheng was taken aback by my words, his face filled with astonishment, unable to utter a complete sentence.
" Gu Xiaxia, you..."
"Yes, I find it laughable myself, but rest assured, the moment I told you I wanted to break up, I had already stopped loving you."
"I came here today to tell you that the money doesn't require marriage to access. As long as I want it, I can take it anytime. The password is my birthday. We've been together for three years; if you remembered my birthday at all, that ten million would have been yours long ago. This is probably karma."
Zhang Xincheng took a long time to process my words. By the time he finally reacted, I had already stood up and walked away without looking back.
He frantically pounded on the glass behind me, but no matter how much he shouted, I didn't spare him another glance.
As I exited the prison, the rain had just cleared, and everything felt renewed.
I looked at the cold ten million in my bank account, unable to suppress a smile that spread across my face.
I could let go of everything from the past; from now on, I would live each day with grace.
A brand new life awaited me, and that cold ten million was just the beginning. Here I come!
"The End"
