"Mom, Xiaxia hasn't eaten yet. Can you at least let her take a break?"
Zhang Xincheng noticed my expression had changed and hurriedly urged his mother, giving her a meaningful look.
Looking at the cold rice in the pot and the few remaining pickles, I felt frustrated.
Although I wasn't a pampered young lady, I was still raised with care by my parents. To be bullied like this on our first meeting made me wonder how things would be once we got married.
I frowned and coldly called Zhang Xincheng into the kitchen.
"What’s wrong with your parents? It’s only our first meeting; they shouldn’t be so picky with me!"
"My dad is an old-fashioned man with a bit of a macho attitude. He’s spoiled by my mom, so don’t take his words to heart."
"And what about your mom? First, she wants me to cook, then to take care of Grandma, and now she doesn’t even leave me a warm meal. What does she think I am?"
"Calm down, sweetheart. My mom has a sharp tongue but a soft heart. Don’t let her tough exterior fool you; she probably likes you more than you think."
"Likes me?"
"Yeah, but she just thinks your cooking skills need some improvement. She wants you to come over more often to cook and learn from her."
I scoffed!
What nonsense! She really thought I was free labor? As if I would come over to cook!
I grabbed my bag and turned to leave, but just then, a pained groan came from the bedroom.
For some reason, Grandma had fallen out of bed, knocking over the potty beneath her and getting herself all messy.
Without thinking about anything else, the whole family rushed to help Grandma.
Grandma rolled on the bed, continuously crying out in pain.
"Grandma keeps shouting in pain; she must have hurt her bones. It’s definitely Gu Xiaxia who didn’t place Grandma properly after feeding her!"
Zhang Xincheng's Mom was sweating profusely, and her gaze felt like a sharp knife directed at me.
My mind went blank, and I panicked instantly.
Fortunately, Zhang Xincheng came to my rescue, saying, " Xiaxia is new here and doesn’t understand these things. Stop blaming her; we need to get Grandma to the hospital quickly!"
Zhang Xincheng hurriedly found a car to take Grandma to the hospital, while His Dad went next door to borrow a wheelchair.
That left just me and his mom in the house.
After they left, Grandma's cries of pain grew louder. We waited for over ten minutes, but they still hadn’t returned.
"Why isn’t Xincheng back yet? Grandma can’t wait any longer; we need to call 120."
I quickly took out my phone and described the elderly woman's injuries and our exact location in one breath.
But just two minutes after hanging up, his mom said I had given the wrong location. She insisted on going to the alley to meet them, leaving me alone to watch over Grandma.
I broke out in a cold sweat.
I had no experience caring for anyone, let alone a paralyzed elderly person with fractures.
"Auntie, I’m scared to watch Grandma alone..."
"What are you afraid of? You’re old enough now! Just keep an eye on her; don’t let her move around or fall again. We’ll be back soon," Zhang Xincheng's Mom said before walking away without looking back.
Time passed second by second, and no matter how many times I called Zhang Xincheng, he wouldn’t answer.
My grandmother was rolling in pain on the bed, her pants already soiled, and now the bed was a mess. All I could do was try to comfort her.
Fortunately, after a few minutes, she slowly calmed down.
But it wasn’t long before she said she urgently needed to urinate.
The original bedpan was no longer usable, so I had to grab a plastic bag to help her.
I closed my eyes and tried to suppress my disgust as I held the bag for her on the bed.
However, after a moment of trickling, a strong stream suddenly shot out and splashed directly onto my hand.
I screamed in shock.
My grandmother was startled by my scream and, in her panic, knocked over the plastic bag, spilling everything onto the bed.
The mess spread everywhere, including all over my clothes.
In that moment, I completely broke down.
