In the house, there was no sign of Yang Zhi Kui; he had likely run off to who knows where.
The man shouted into the yard, "Yang Zhi Kui! Yang Zhi Kui! Where did you go? Did you go to the bathroom?"
Old Shao waved his hand and said, "No need to call for him; he’s probably not here anymore."
A few people filed in one after another.
The dormitory wasn’t large, probably around twenty square meters. Inside, there was only a bed and a cabinet. The quilt was still laid out on the bed, and the electric blanket was still on. Old Shao reached in and felt it; the electric blanket was warm. There were some clothes on the bed, and a stainless steel bowl stuffed at the head of the bed.
"How many workers do you have here?" Old Shao turned to look at the man and asked.
"Two," the man replied quickly while leaning against the door. "I’m the boss here, my last name is Wang. I have two mechanics: one Master named Pan, and the other is an apprentice, this Yang Zhi Kui. The apprentice has meals and accommodation provided, earning three hundred a month."
"Does he live here alone?" Old Shao stood up and walked over to the cabinet.
Boss Wang nodded, "You can see for yourself. This is all just a small business to make ends meet. Including me, there are only three of us in total. That Master has a wife and kids in Dragon City; he goes home to sleep every night. I have a room in the back; my wife comes by to cook lunch, and Yang Zhi Kui sleeps here at night since it’s empty anyway."
Old Shao grabbed the cabinet handle with both hands and opened it. Inside, several pieces of clothing were haphazardly thrown about, emitting a foul odor—a mix of oil and sweat—indicating they hadn’t been washed in a long time. The cabinet had two levels; the top was messy, but the bottom was neatly organized.
Old Shao crouched down to inspect what was stored on that lower level.
A large storage box caught his eye as he opened it. Inside, he found that this box was also divided into four sections, each containing different items: transparent plastic bags and various bottles neatly categorized within.
Realizing what this was, Old Shao put on gloves before carefully removing the storage box from the cabinet and placing it on the bed.
"What is it?" Yuan Jun stood at the door, peering inside.
"It’s probably the 'treasures' collected by this fetishist," Shao the Elder replied.
With that, Old Shao began to pull out various items from a storage box.
Jiang He stood beside Old Shao, his eyes scanning the contents. Whether it was plastic bags or bottles, each was labeled with a note, scrawled in messy handwriting.
"Zhu Liang's black hair," Old Shao read aloud as he pulled out a plastic bag, revealing black hair inside through the transparent material.
"They're sorted so meticulously," Xu Yiman remarked upon seeing the next plastic bag, which contained Zhu Liang's red hair.
Old Shao nodded and retrieved it, revealing a variety of items labeled "Zhu Liang's hair," including red and black strands, straight and curly textures, long and short lengths.
Continuing to sift through the box, Old Shao found various other hairs from Zhu Liang's body, leaving everyone puzzled about how Yang Zhi Kui managed to collect them all.
In addition to these plastic bags, Old Shao also produced several jars and bottles.
The group looked on as he revealed "Zhu Liang's saliva," "Zhu Liang's thick phlegm," "Zhu Liang's menstrual blood," and even "Zhu Liang's feces."
There seemed to be no end to what Yang Zhi Kui had managed to collect.
Upon closer inspection, they discovered a total of twelve bottles and thirty-two plastic bags.
Aside from the storage box, there were also some women's clothing in the cabinet. Xu Yiman approached to examine them and found that both underwear and outerwear were neatly folded, each labeled for easy categorization.
Xu Yiman glanced at Zhu Liang's clothes, then at Yang Zhi Kui's attire, and couldn't help but draw a conclusion.
"Love makes people clean," Xu Yiman remarked.
Old Shao tidied up the items and said, "Yes, my own clothes are thrown haphazardly in a cabinet, but Zhu Liang's clothes are neatly folded without a single wrinkle. Yang Zhi Kui has indeed become pathological to a certain extent; I think Zhu Liang must have noticed something."
Yuan Jun stood at the door, looking into the courtyard. "That’s for sure. Yang Zhi Kui must have been pestering Zhu Liang to get these things."
"That's the problem," Old Shao said as he sat on the bed. "Anyone who sees this behavior would inevitably think it's perverse. It's understandable that Zhu Liang hasn't called the police, but if she hasn't confided in anyone at all, that's a bit odd. Sister Ma, such a warm-hearted person who loves to gossip, doesn't know that Zhu Liang is being harassed by a pervert. Clearly, Zhu Liang has never mentioned this."
"Zhu Liang is swallowing her pain," Yuan Jun said. "Silently being stalked by a crazed admirer who collects her various belongings—Zhu Liang really can endure a lot."
Old Shao closed his eyes and slowly said while sitting on the bed, "That may not be the case. Zhu Liang's personality should be dependent; such people appear independent and seem to handle everything themselves, but in reality, they are the most likely to rely on others, particularly those closest to them."
"Her parents?" Yuan Jun asked.
Old Shao shook his head. "It's still unclear. The urgent task now is to find out where Yang Zhi Kui has gone. What do you think, Jiang He?"
"Wait," Jiang He replied with just one word.
Old Shao nodded and said, "I think so too. Boss Wang, what should you be doing at this time of day?"
Boss Wang scratched his head and said, "Usually, I should be closing up and heading home."
"Good, you can go home now," Old Shao instructed Boss Wang.
Boss Wang fidgeted at the door, unable to speak.
Old Shao smiled and said, "Don't worry, nothing will be missing here. Also, don't contact Yang Zhi Kui. Just do what you usually do, understand?"
Boss Wang glanced at Yuan Jun standing beside him and nodded.
Watching Boss Wang leave, Yuan Jun turned back and asked, "What about us? Where do we go to find Yang Zhi Kui?"
"Not yet," Old Shao replied with a smile. "We need to wait."
"Will he come back?" Yuan Jun inquired.
"He will definitely return!" Jiang He pointed at the storage box on the bed and said, "This is his most treasured possession. Unless he's dead, he will surely come back."
At midnight, Old Wang Auto Repair closed its doors, and the rolling shutter was locked, leaving only the side gate of the yard open. With a creak, the iron gate was pushed open, and a head peeked in from outside. The yard was dark, not even illuminated by moonlight.
The shadow did not turn on any lights; it moved forward in the dark as if it was already familiar with the place.
He climbed the steps and opened the dormitory door.
In the darkness, he sighed and climbed onto his bed. But just as he pulled back the covers, he felt a hand. He gasped in shock and fell to the ground. At that moment, the lights in the room turned on, revealing a person lying on the bed—someone he didn't recognize at all.
Yuan Jun tightly grasped his hand and asked, "Yang Zhi Kui?"
"Yes, yes," Yang Zhi Kui replied as he looked at Yuan Jun. "Who are you?"
"Police," Yuan Jun said.
As soon as the words left his mouth, footsteps echoed from the backyard, and Old Shao returned with Jiang He and the others.
"What’s going on?" Yang Zhi Kui asked, clearly feeling uneasy.
Old Shao sized up Yang Zhi Kui, who stood about five feet seven inches tall. Even in late autumn, he wore only a short-sleeved shirt that revealed his bulging biceps. However, at that moment, his hand was firmly grasped by Yuan Jun, leaving him unable to move or pull away.
"What’s going on?" Old Shao asked Yang Zhi Kui. "Do you know Zhu Liang?"
Yang Zhi Kui sat on the ground and looked up at the man before him. "Zhu Liang? How could I not know her? She is my wife."
"Wife?" Jiang He asked in confusion. "Our investigation found that Zhu Liang is single and has never been married. How can she be your wife?"
Upon hearing this, Yang Zhi Kui tried to stand up but was held back by Yuan Jun's grip on his hand, causing him to plop back down onto the ground, visibly angry.
"Zhu Liang is my wife. I’ve liked her for a long time. I’ve liked her since the second year of middle school; she likes me too," Yang Zhi Kui insisted.
"Likes you?" Yuan Jun finally released his grip and sat up on the bed.
Yang Zhi Kui stood up as well, his excitement evident as he spoke haltingly. "She likes me! We grew up together, completely innocent. I like her, and she likes me too. She just wanted to test my sincerity, which is why she didn’t accept me right away. But now, she finally has."
Listening to Yang Zhi Kui's words, Jiang He suddenly realized something.
Jiang He moved closer to Yang Zhi Kui and slowly crouched down beside him.
Yang Zhi Kui didn’t know what the person in front of him was planning to do. Instinctively, he recoiled and covered his face with his hands. It seemed this was Yang Zhi Kui's reflex. Yuan Jun, standing nearby, noticed this and could tell that Yang Zhi Kui had endured quite a bit of beating.
However, Jiang He did not make any aggressive moves; he simply inhaled the scent emanating from Yang Zhi Kui.
It was the smell of gasoline, the smell of steak, and the smell of decay.
The closest place to Old Wang Auto Repair where a body could be found was the crematorium, and Zhu Liang's body was currently still in the Body Refrigeration Room at the crematorium. In other words, Yang Zhi Kui had gone nowhere else but to the crematorium.
"You moved the body to the crematorium!" Jiang He stood up and looked at Yang Zhi Kui.
"Yes!" Yang Zhi Kui giggled, "Today, I officially married Zhu Liang."
With that, Yang Zhi Kui raised his ring finger, saying, "I bought a ring at the mall yesterday. Do you think it looks good?"
Under the lights, a platinum ring sparkled brightly.
