Jiang Liu had a dream. In this dream, he found himself enveloped in darkness, surrounded by shadowy figures whose faces he could not discern. Each figure seemed to be saying something to him, their voices faint and indistinct. No matter how hard Jiang Liu tried to listen, he could not make out what they were saying.
Gradually, the voices grew louder and sharper, until they pierced his mind like needles, causing him immense pain.
"Shut the hell up!"
Unable to endure it any longer, Jiang Liu shouted angrily at the figures around him. The jarring noise suddenly ceased, replaced by a familiar voice that seemed to be calling his name.
The voice was somewhat recognizable, but Jiang Liu couldn't recall whose it was. Just as he was about to remember, the darkness before him shattered, and blinding light flooded in.
When Jiang Liu opened his eyes, the first thing he saw was Wang Chao's infuriating expression. He instinctively pushed Wang Chao away from his face.
Once Wang Chao was out of his line of sight, Jiang Liu realized he was in a car. He noticed several unfamiliar figures slumped in the other seats, seemingly fast asleep.
"What’s going on?"
Jiang Liu's mind struggled to catch up as he turned to Wang Chao and asked.
"Isn't it obvious? We've already started the mission," Wang Chao replied with a disdainful glance at Jiang Liu.
"I’m not asking you that. What about them?" Jiang Liu pointed at the others who were still in deep slumber.
"Oh, them? They're from other teams, but they haven't woken up yet." Wang Chao leaned closer to Jiang Liu and added, "I counted the participants for this mission. Including us, there are a total of sixteen people. It looks like this mission is going to be tough, so you need to be mentally prepared."
Hearing the number of participants, Jiang Liu was taken aback. He had never encountered so many participants in the previous supernatural events he had experienced. This time, with as many as six people involved, he couldn't help but feel a twinge of concern about the situation.
"Wang Chao, do you know any of these people?"
At that moment, the others in the car were gradually waking up, and Jiang Liu could only ask softly.
Before Wang Chao could respond, Jiang Liu caught a whiff of a fragrance coming from behind him, followed by Dream Sister's voice ringing in his ear.
"I know a few of these people."
Jiang Liu didn't dare to turn around because he sensed that Dream Sister was right beside him. Turning around recklessly might lead to some unwanted contact, and he found her behavior somewhat unpredictable.
"Among these people, there's one you all need to pay attention to—the one sitting at the back of the third row in front of you."
Before Jiang Liu could get a good look at the person Dream Sister was referring to, someone sitting in front of him suddenly turned around, and their eyes met.
"Jiang Liu!"
Many times, Jiang Liu believed that everything in the world was connected by an invisible thread. From the moment a baby is born, the threads connecting each person slowly increase. No matter how hard one struggles, they cannot escape the binding of these threads; ultimately, struggling may lead to being cut by them.
Thus, Jiang Liu always maintained a go-with-the-flow attitude towards developments. Even now, he had never forced himself.
Yet it felt as if an unnamed force was manipulating the course of events, just like at this moment.
In that instant when their eyes locked, for some reason, memories of the supernatural incidents he experienced during military training began to replay in Jiang Liu's mind.
In that incident, Jiang Liu had seen that gaze before, but back then it was filled with fear and terror.
Now, however, in this gaze, all he could see was hatred—a desire to kill him on the spot.
"Long time no see, Jiang Liu!"
A figure descended from their seat and approached Jiang Liu, looking down at him with gritted teeth as they uttered those words.
At that moment, Jiang Liu snapped back to reality, his gaze shifting to the figure's face. A name long buried in the depths of his memory surfaced in his mind.
"Zhang Lin?"
The person before him was Zhang Lin, a newcomer Jiang Liu had encountered during the Ghost Tower Incident. But now, Zhang Lin had undergone a tremendous transformation; the once handsome face was marred by a deep scar, and the sunny disposition he once had was replaced by an aura of brutality.
Seeing such a drastic change in Zhang Lin left Jiang Liu instinctively opening his mouth to say something, yet he found himself at a loss for words.
"I didn't expect you to remember me. I wonder if you still recall a girl named Shuangshuang?"
Zhang Lin's expression twisted into a grimace as he stared at Jiang Liu, the scar on his face seeming to come alive at that moment.
Before Jiang Liu could respond, Wang Chao, who had noticed the tension between them, stepped forward and looked at Zhang Lin. "What do you want?"
Casting a glance at Wang Chao, Zhang Lin suddenly burst into laughter, leaving Wang Chao feeling somewhat bewildered.
"What are you laughing at?" Wang Chao asked, irritation creeping into his voice.
Ignoring the irritated Wang Chao, Zhang Lin cast a deep glance at Jiang Liu before tossing out a line and returning to her seat.
"This time, it's either you die or I live."
As Zhang Lin settled back into her seat, Wang Chao nudged the still-dazed Jiang Liu and asked, "What’s going on? It seems like there’s some conflict between you two. The atmosphere is tense."
Looking at Zhang Lin's back, Jiang Liu sighed, "I'm not really sure what happened."
Wang Chao wore a disbelieving expression. "Come on, look at how she looks like she wants to eat you alive. Didn't you hear her say it's either you die or she lives?"
Jiang Liu sighed again, about to explain when Wang Chao continued, "No matter what happened before, you're part of our family now. Since she said it's either you die or she lives, that makes her our enemy. We should find a chance during the mission to deal with her."
Hearing this from Wang Chao made Jiang Liu feel somewhat touched, but he shook his head. "No need for that; this is my issue."
"It’s now all of our issue," Senmu's voice chimed in from behind. "Even if you don’t want to confront her, I will personally take care of her during this incident."
Jiang Liu was taken aback by such words coming from the usually gentle Senmu, and he felt the hand of Dream Sister on his shoulder tightening.
"Jiang Liu?!"
At that moment, the car once again echoed with Jiang Liu's name.
