Horror Chapter
As the three of them climbed the stairs, Wang Chao supported the still-recovering Jiang Liu while keeping an eye on their surroundings. He asked, "Let me ask you a question. How did you know the ghost's target was you?"
Looking up at the seemingly endless spiral staircase, Jiang Liu waved his hand to indicate he could manage on his own. Leaning against the railing, he explained, "It's actually quite simple. If you think about it carefully, you'll understand. The moment the elevator malfunctioned, I was the only one who could see the ghostly figure, while both of you saw nothing.
The most likely scenario is that the ghost intentionally let me see it. However, I lean more towards this being a hint. If this is indeed a clue given by a supernatural event, then it comes with dangers associated with that hint. That's why I suspect the ghost's target might be me."
"That makes sense," Wang Chao nodded in agreement with Jiang Liu's reasoning and then asked, "Since you think the ghost's appearance is a hint, what does this hint mean?"
Before Wang Chao could finish, Jiang Liu shook his head and said, "I don't know. We haven't even seen the main character of this incident yet; how could we possibly know what the hint is so quickly?"
Wang Chao realized he was being a bit hasty with his questions and decided not to press further. He turned back to Lin Mei Mei, who was following behind them. "How are you holding up? Do you need to take a break?"
Lin Mei Mei shook her head to indicate she could keep going without resting.
Jiang Liu glanced back at Lin Mei Mei and leaned closer to Wang Chao, whispering, "What's up with that dagger Lin Mei Mei is hiding?"
Upon hearing Jiang Liu's question, Wang Chao's expression changed for a moment before he replied in a somewhat awkward whisper, "You shouldn't pry into that. Just know that she’s had a rough time."
Seeing Wang Chao's expression, Jiang Liu understood that pressing further would yield no answers. Besides, everyone has their own secrets; being too nosy isn't good either. He clarified, "It's just that your attitude towards Lin Mei Mei made me misunderstand."
Wang Chao shook his head. "It's not just me; Senmu and Dream Sister are also very protective of Lin Mei Mei. If we make it through this alive, you'll notice that in the days to come."
With that, Wang Chao didn't want to delve any deeper into the topic of Lin Mei Mei. He quickened his pace to walk ahead of Jiang Liu and began surveying their surroundings more closely.
Jiang Liu, seeing this, decided not to press further and continued up the stairs. Lin Mei Mei followed silently behind, pretending not to notice the secret conversation between the two.
Since their target lived on the Thirty-First Floor, a very high level, it took Jiang Liu and his companions over twenty minutes to reach the twenty-third floor. They were already out of breath and had no choice but to stop and rest for a moment.
"This couple is really something, living on such a high floor. If anything happens, they won't be able to escape," Wang Chao complained while catching his breath.
"At this height, they must be taking the elevator. Only we are unfortunate enough to be climbing the stairs," Jiang Liu replied as he took out his phone to call the two targets and let them know that they were almost there. To his surprise, one of the targets called him instead, and he quickly answered.
"M-Master, how much longer until you arrive? My wife and I are really scared right now."
The man's voice came through the phone, trembling with fear.
"We're almost there; we've just reached the twenty-seventh floor."
"Master, please hurry! Just now, my wife and I heard someone knocking on our door, and it seems like it was opened."
"What! Your door was opened?" Jiang Liu exclaimed in shock before quickly asking, "Are you both okay?"
"N-No, the door was just opened; nothing has happened yet, but my wife and I are very frightened."
"We'll be there soon. You and your wife need to prepare yourselves. If anything unusual happens, get out of the house immediately," Jiang Liu instructed.
"Okay, okay. Master, please come quickly."
"I understand. We're on our way."
After hanging up the phone, Jiang Liu looked at Wang Chao and Lin Mei Mei. "The target is in a bit of danger right now; we need to get there immediately."
Understanding the urgency of the situation, Wang Chao didn't hesitate and asked Lin Mei Mei, who was resting against the wall, "How are you holding up? Can you still walk?"
Lin Mei Mei didn't respond verbally but nodded to indicate that she could still manage. Wang Chao, knowing her well, recognized that she was just putting on a brave face. He squatted down in front of her.
"I'll carry you for the rest of the way. At this rate, even if we make it to the Thirty-First Floor, I’m afraid you’ll be half dead by then."
Wang Chao expected Lin Mei Mei to refuse, but after a moment of contemplation, she surprisingly nodded in agreement with his suggestion.
As Wang Chao lifted Lin Mei Mei onto his back, he shed his usual carefree demeanor. Glancing back at Jiang Liu, who was watching in stunned silence, he said, "Keep up; I’m picking up the pace."
With that, he bounded up the stairs, and Jiang Liu followed closely behind. Watching Wang Chao run ahead with Lin Mei Mei on his back, Jiang Liu suddenly felt that he didn’t know Wang Chao as well as he thought.
The time they had spent together had led him to believe he understood everyone in their "family" to some extent, but now it seemed he was mistaken.
Just as Wang Chao had said earlier, everyone had their own secrets. Lin Mei Mei, who was unusually wary of men; Dream Sister, who commanded respect; gentle Senmu; and even the previously carefree Wang Chao likely had untold stories of his own.
Shaking his head to dispel these distracting thoughts, Jiang Liu focused on keeping pace with Wang Chao as they raced toward the Thirty-First Floor.
