Horror Chapter
The sudden extinguishing of the elevator lights was unexpected for the three of them, so when darkness enveloped them, each person reacted instinctively.
Jiang Liu immediately took a few steps back, pressing against the cold wall while keeping a vigilant eye on his surroundings.
Wang Chao, on the other hand, rushed toward Lin Mei Mei the moment the lights went out, only to be met with a horrifying scream echoing through the elevator.
"What happened, Wang Chao?"
In the darkness, Jiang Liu dared not move recklessly and could only call out to his companions.
Wang Chao gasped in the dark and replied, "Nothing, nothing's wrong. Are you okay?"
"I'm fine. What about Lin Mei Mei?"
"I'm okay too," Lin Mei Mei's voice trembled slightly with panic.
Hearing that the other two were unharmed, Jiang Liu let out a sigh of relief and pulled out his phone to turn on the flashlight, illuminating their surroundings.
As he switched on the light, he thought he might be seeing things; from the corner of his eye, he caught sight of a red figure quietly standing motionless in the corner of the elevator.
The moment he saw the red figure, Jiang Liu felt his scalp tingle as if it might explode. A chilling sensation surged from his feet straight to his brain.
He couldn't bring himself to move and could only stand there in a daze, stealing glances at the Red Phantom that lingered silently in the corner.
Wang Chao noticed that Jiang Liu was standing still, his face pale and unsettling under the harsh light.
Realizing that Jiang Liu must have seen something alarming, Wang Chao felt a surge of anxiety. He pulled Lin Mei Mei back a few steps, pressing against the wall as he observed everything inside the elevator.
However, the elevator was barely ten square meters in size, and a normal person could see clearly with just one glance. After scanning for a while without noticing anything unusual, Wang Chao could only call out softly to Jiang Liu.
“Jiang Liu, what happened?”
At the sound of Wang Chao's voice, the Red Phantom that Jiang Liu had noticed vanished suddenly, leaving him drenched in cold sweat as if he had just run a marathon.
“It’s nothing. I just need to rest for a moment,” Jiang Liu said, leaning against the elevator wall and waving his hand to indicate that now was not the time to speak.
Seeing Jiang Liu return to normal, Wang Chao let out a sigh of relief. The cramped space of the elevator had put immense pressure on the three of them, and not being able to see anything except Jiang Liu's pale face only added to Wang Chao's frustration.
“Is it here? Do you still have signal on your phone?” Lin Mei Mei asked calmly, though her eyes betrayed her anxiety.
Jiang Liu glanced at his phone and nodded, indicating that there was indeed signal.
It was then that Jiang Liu noticed Lin Mei Mei had somehow produced a dagger about ten centimeters long, its blade glinting ominously as if it had been sharpened recently.
Lin Mei Mei seemed oblivious to the surprise in Jiang Liu's eyes as she tucked the dagger back beneath her skirt and brushed her hands together. “Looks like we’ve already left.”
At that moment, even Wang Chao, who usually seemed oblivious, realized something was wrong. He furrowed his brow and asked Jiang Liu, "Did you see it just now?"
"Yeah," Jiang Liu pointed to a corner of the elevator. "There was a Red Phantom standing right there."
As soon as those words left his mouth, Jiang Liu could hear Wang Chao gasp in shock, while Lin Mei Mei nervously moved away from the spot Jiang Liu indicated.
Wang Chao made a face that was anything but pleasant. "Are you sure it wasn't just your imagination? I didn't see anything at all."
"You both didn't see anything?" Jiang Liu looked at them in confusion.
After exchanging glances, Lin Mei Mei and Wang Chao shook their heads in unison, indicating they hadn’t seen the Red Phantom Jiang Liu mentioned.
"This is strange. Am I the only one who saw it?" Jiang Liu muttered as he stared at the corner.
He was certain he hadn't imagined it. He also believed that Wang Chao and Lin Mei Mei wouldn't lie about something like this. But since neither of them had seen it and he hadn’t been mistaken, there was only one possibility left.
The Red Phantom had deliberately allowed him to see it. But why would it do that? Did he have something different about him?
With that thought, Jiang Liu lowered his head to inspect himself. After a thorough check, he found no extra features compared to Lin Mei Mei and Wang Chao, which only deepened his confusion.
The difference in mindset between the old and the new generation was evident here. Although the lights still hadn’t returned, and only the area illuminated by Jiang Liu's phone was visible while everything else remained shrouded in darkness, Wang Chao and Lin Mei Mei were no longer as panicked as they had been at first.
At this point, Wang Chao turned on his phone's flashlight and mimicked Jiang Liu's actions, shining it toward other parts of the elevator. However, he still couldn’t find any trace of the ghostly figure Jiang Liu had described; it was as if it never existed at all.
"Alright, since we can't see anything now, it means the ghost might have left. We should focus on figuring out how to get out of this elevator."
Wang Chao stomped his feet anxiously. "I'm really scared the elevator will malfunction again. If I had known, I wouldn't have taken it. I'd rather climb to the rooftop."
No sooner had he spoken than a sudden and intense feeling of weightlessness hit them from beneath their feet.
The elevator was plummeting downwards!
The sensation of weightlessness came abruptly and faded just as quickly. Within seconds, a piercing screech echoed from outside the elevator, followed by a sudden halt.
All three were caught off guard and landed on the floor with a thud. Once the elevator stopped descending, Jiang Liu scrambled up awkwardly and looked at Wang Chao. "I beg you, can you please stop talking?"
Jiang Liu was genuinely frightened by Wang Chao's bad luck charm. He had already experienced its effects during the Classroom Incident, and he couldn't believe that even now, Wang Chao's words still seemed to hold such power.
Wang Chao was also bewildered by the series of events. He opened his mouth to defend himself but was interrupted by Jiang Liu.
"Don't, Wang Chao, just stop talking."
Seeing Jiang Liu's terrified expression made Wang Chao feel frustrated. When did his bad luck charm become so effective?
At that moment, Lin Mei Mei also got up from the floor and shot a glare at Wang Chao. Turning to Jiang Liu, she said, "What do we do now? It seems like the ghost doesn't want us to leave here."
There was some truth to her words. If the ghost intended to harm them, it wouldn't have played these tricks. So far, they had only been startled; there hadn't been any real danger to their lives. Just as Lin Mei Mei pointed out, it seemed the ghost's goal was simply to prevent them from going upstairs.
"If it doesn't want us to leave, we still have to find a way out. Who knows what will happen next?" Jiang Liu looked up at the ceiling of the elevator. "Right now, it's only stopped because of an emergency brake. We should take this chance to get out of here."
"How do we get out? There's not even an escape route in this cramped space."
Wang Chao glanced at the interior of the elevator.
"Who doesn't have a way out?"
Jiang Liu moved to the elevator door and waved for Wang Chao to come over.
Seeing Jiang Liu's gesture, Wang Chao understood what he intended. This guy actually wanted to pry open the elevator doors and climb out directly.
Although Jiang Liu's approach seemed feasible under the current circumstances, the thought of how many unfortunate souls in horror movies had met their demise by being caught in the elevator at that moment sent a chill down Wang Chao's spine.
"Jiang Liu, I think since Lin Mei Mei doesn't seem to have any intention of harming us, we might as well stay here and adapt to the situation."
Wang Chao tried to persuade Jiang Liu, hoping he would abandon such a dangerous plan.
To his surprise, Jiang Liu turned around and looked at Wang Chao coldly.
"Have you ever considered why the ghost wants to keep us in the elevator?"
This question left Wang Chao speechless. The reason he wanted Jiang Liu to temporarily abandon his risky plan was that he couldn't understand the ghost's purpose in keeping them trapped in the elevator. In such a situation, adapting seemed like the best choice.
However, from Jiang Liu's tone, Wang Chao sensed that he had realized something important, which was why he was so eager to leave this place and chose such a perilous course of action.
These thoughts raced through Wang Chao's mind. Just as he was about to respond, he heard Jiang Liu continue speaking.
"I fear that the ghost's target is not us, but rather the person we are trying to find. The reason it has trapped us here is to prevent us from contacting that person, or perhaps it has confined us here to buy itself some time."
"Buy time? Could it be..." Wang Chao looked at Jiang Liu in shock.
"Exactly. What I'm worried about now is not that we don't have enough time, but that the target of this incident doesn't have enough time."
Wang Chao finally understood Jiang Liu's urgency and believed in this possibility. He handed his phone to Lin Mei Mei to help with the lighting.
"One, two, three!"
Wang Chao and Jiang Liu pressed against the narrow gap of the elevator doors, pushing hard in opposite directions.
Gradually, the tightly shut elevator doors were pulled apart by Jiang Liu and Wang Chao, creating a small opening. Seeing that they could actually open the doors filled them with energy, and they exerted even more force to widen the gap.
Finally, as bright light streamed in from outside, the elevator doors were fully opened by the two of them.
Before they could even feel excited about their success, the elevator suddenly dropped a few centimeters with a loud clang before coming to a halt again.
At that moment, Jiang Liu didn't have time to see what was outside; he shouted at Wang Chao, "Wang Chao, you go out first and then pull Lin Mei Mei out."
"No way." Wang Chao refused without a second thought. "I'm the one with the best physical condition here. You go out first and pull Lin Mei Mei out."
Jiang Liu wanted to jump up and scold Wang Chao, but seeing his determined expression made it clear that he wouldn't budge on this. All he could do was anxiously explain.
"The ghost's target is likely me. If I go out first, none of you might survive. You and Lin Mei Mei should go out first, and then pull me out!"
Wang Chao was about to say something else when Lin Mei Mei interrupted him.
"Wang Chao, you go out first. Jiang Liu is right; if he goes out first, none of us might make it."
Wang Chao understood Jiang Liu's intention and stopped wasting time. He jumped up and grabbed the gap in the wall, staring at the narrow opening that was only a few dozen centimeters high. He swallowed hard and squeezed himself through.
As Wang Chao twisted and crawled out, Jiang Liu watched anxiously.
What he had said earlier was merely speculation, and he wasn't very confident. If the ghost's target wasn't him but one of the other two, then Wang Chao would be in danger, possibly getting caught by the elevator.
Seeing Wang Chao's feet finally leave the elevator, Jiang Liu let out a sigh of relief and turned to Lin Mei Mei. "Hurry, we need to move quickly."
Lin Mei Mei looked at Jiang Liu with a complex expression. Wang Chao's safe exit confirmed her suspicion that Jiang Liu's guess was correct—the ghost's target was indeed Jiang Liu. Once she left this place, being alone in the elevator could spell disaster for him. This might be their last moment together.
Although they had become a team, Lin Mei Mei had never truly regarded Jiang Liu as family. Her attitude towards Wang Chao made that clear.
She believed Jiang Liu understood this as well, so when she saw him choose to let her go first, Lin Mei Mei was somewhat surprised. She didn't understand why Jiang Liu would do that.
At that moment, Wang Chao's hand reached back into the elevator, calling out to Jiang Liu inside. "Hurry!"
Jiang Liu noticed the complex expression on Lin Mei Mei's face and realized what she was thinking. He watched as she forced a grim smile. "Don't worry; I'll be fine."
"What are you all doing? Hurry up!"
Wang Chao shouted anxiously into the elevator.
Seeing Lin Mei Mei still standing in place, Jiang Liu took a big step forward and picked her up, handing her over to Wang Chao.
At the moment he lifted Lin Mei Mei, Jiang Liu felt a flash of cold light in front of him. A sharp dagger was slicing toward his neck, and just as it was about to make contact, the dagger stopped.
Lin Mei Mei also realized what was happening and hurriedly retracted the dagger, avoiding Jiang Liu's surprised gaze as she grabbed Wang Chao's hand and crawled out of the elevator.
Reflecting on the harrowing scene from moments ago, Jiang Liu finally understood why Wang Chao had screamed when he lunged at Lin Mei Mei in the darkness.
He just couldn't comprehend why a young girl would have such a strong defense against boys.
Watching Lin Mei Mei escape safely from the elevator, Jiang Liu took a deep breath. He knew that whether he could survive the next moments depended on luck!
