Watching Master Persona struggle in pain within their grasp, Sub-Personality Jiang Liu laughed even more maniacally.
"What a wonderful feeling, what a real sensation. I've waited so long for this."
Master Persona desperately tried to break free from Sub-Personality's hold, but no matter how hard they struggled, Sub-Personality's grip was like iron, utterly unyielding.
Ignoring Master Persona's increasingly flushed face, Sub-Personality continued, "I bet you still haven't realized the true purpose of this supernatural event. Even the previous incidents must have seemed rather inexplicable to you, right? Let me tell you, it was all because of me. If it weren't for me, you would have died in the earlier supernatural events. But that's fine; I no longer need to protect you. After I kill you, I can become a new version of myself, free from the endless darkness."
Master Persona instinctively clutched at their throat, desperate for a breath of fresh air. Sub-Personality seemed to notice this and loosened their right hand, speaking in a tone filled with feigned concern.
"Oh, did I grip too tightly? Did I make it hard for you to breathe?"
Gasping for air, Master Persona finally lifted their head to look at Sub-Personality, asking, "I can't understand why you're doing this. Why do you have to kill others?"
"You still don't grasp the essence of these supernatural events," Sub-Personality replied, shaking their head in disappointment. "Do you really think that working together will solve every supernatural incident?"
"Isn't that the case? If everyone trusts each other..."
"You are too naive," Sub-Personality interrupted. "People are selfish; they'll do anything to survive. Kindness means nothing here. In fact, the first to die are often those who show compassion."
"That's just your one-sided opinion."
"Isn't that what your perspective is as well?" Sub-Personality countered.
"No, at least Li Lin and Xu Qian aren't like that. Neither are Xu Hai and Xu Meng," Master Persona retorted.
"Oh right, I almost forgot about them," Sub-Personality suddenly grinned wickedly and leaned closer to Master Persona, whispering in their ear, "Do you know how Xu Hai died? Let me tell you—it was actually Xu Meng. She knew what would happen standing in front of that door. She also knew that Xu Hai genuinely liked her. So she was certain that if she were ever in danger, Xu Hai would risk his life to protect her. And the result? Xu Meng survived while Xu Hai remained trapped in that room forever."
"It’s impossible. I witnessed everything that happened back then, and Xu Meng's behavior was nothing like what you described," Master Persona said, disbelief evident in their voice.
Observing Master Persona's expression, Sub-Personality shrugged nonchalantly. "I'm merely stating a fact. Whether you believe me or not is irrelevant, but I must tell you that every time I relive the events, as long as Xu Hai is dead, Xu Meng behaves like a dog begging for protection from others. She would do anything for it."
Seeing the blow to Master Persona's confidence, Sub-Personality seemed pleased to continue. "When you were on the third floor, I knew you were in the other room, but I chose not to intervene because I wanted to see what choice you would make next. Yet again, you disappointed me by making the same choice as the others.
Do you really think Xu Meng has lost her mind? She has tricked you with this act countless times. Wang Ke warned you repeatedly, yet you still refuse to believe him. It's quite disgusting how someone like you, who doesn't trust others, engages in such repulsive behavior."
At the mention of Wang Ke, Master Persona's eyes lit up with urgency. "Wait, where is Wang Ke? What happened to him?"
"He's dead. I killed him myself."
Sub-Personality ground Master Persona underfoot. "He no longer holds any value to me. Who do you think informed him about the Mortuary? Who told him that only by experiencing the final event could he complete this supernatural occurrence? It was all me! Everything was my design."
Just then, a glimmer of light pierced through the previously empty darkness. Sub-Personality furrowed their brow at Master Persona beneath them. "Time is running out. I had hoped to chat with you a bit longer, but it seems there won't be an opportunity now. Don't worry; when you return to reality, I'll remember you. Goodbye."
As Sub-Personality lifted their foot to stomp down on Master Persona's neck, despair washed over Master Persona. Suddenly, a glinting dagger appeared behind Sub-Personality and plunged deep into their chest, revealing its sharp tip.
Feeling the searing pain in their chest, Sub-Personality looked down at the blood dripping from the blade in disbelief that anyone else could be present here. They turned their head to see who had attacked them but were met with another swift strike; the dagger sliced through their neck cleanly, sending their head rolling away.
Master Persona lay on the ground, staring at this sudden appearance of another self, their mind swirling in confusion over what had just transpired.
The newly arrived Jiang Liu regarded Master Persona calmly. "The exit is open now. When you return to reality, you'll understand everything."
Without waiting for a response from Master Persona, Jiang Liu turned and walked back into the depths of darkness.
As Jiang Liu disappeared into the shadows, Master Persona snapped back to reality and struggled to rise from the ground. They glanced at the headless corpse of Sub-Personality before turning toward the light ahead.
"That's the entire process of the supernatural event I experienced this time."
After a long recounting, Jiang Liu felt an unusual dryness in his throat and picked up the cup of water on the table, taking several large gulps to quench his thirst.
Wang Chao, who had been listening with a somewhat dazed expression, was so absorbed that he didn't even notice the cigarette between his fingers had burned down to the filter. It wasn't until a burning sensation shot through his fingers that he snapped back to reality, quickly extinguishing the cigarette butt and looking at Jiang Liu.
"Why does your experience sound so unbelievable? Are you trying to fool me?"
Jiang Liu finished the water in his cup and glanced at Wang Chao. "Do I look that idle?"
After studying Jiang Liu for a moment, Wang Chao nodded seriously. "Yes."
Caught off guard by Wang Chao's bluntness, Jiang Liu feigned an intention to leave, but Wang Chao grabbed his arm.
"Just kidding, just kidding."
After calming Jiang Liu down with a few words, Wang Chao asked, "So what did you mean when you said you knew everything after you came out?"
Jiang Liu pinched the bridge of his nose, deep in thought. "I've been pondering this since the event ended, and I came up with a possibility."
"What possibility?"
"I think the supernatural event I experienced was actually all fake, or that everyone except me was an illusion."
"What do you mean?"
"It means that Wang Ke, Lin Dahai, Sun Ting, and Xu Meng were all figments of my imagination," Jiang Liu explained.
"I still don't understand," Wang Chao said, scratching his head.
"What I mean is that the supernatural events I've experienced this time were actually all created in my mind," Jiang Liu explained, looking at Wang Chao. "You mentioned before that sometimes I act like a completely different person. This means there might be another personality, or even multiple personalities, existing in my mind. The supernatural events could be based on this, allowing me to experience an event entirely within my own brain."
"Now I get it, but how do we explain it to others?" Wang Chao continued to ask.
"Others might just be reflections of my real-life experiences. For example, Wang Ke represents my desire for someone to explain everything to me after my first supernatural incident. Xu Hai and Xu Meng are manifestations of my thoughts about Li Lin and Xu Qian. And Lin Dahai is... well, you get the idea."
After hearing Jiang Liu's speculation, Wang Chao was convinced by his words and took a few deep drags from his cigarette. "Wow, so supernatural events can be like this!"
"It's not just you; we know too little about Interdimensional Supernatural Incidents, so any form they take is acceptable."
"It seems I'll have to be more cautious during future supernatural events," Wang Chao said, still feeling uneasy.
Jiang Liu glanced at the clock and noticed it was already midnight. He waved his hand at Wang Chao, indicating that it was late and he needed to go back to sleep.
Seeing Jiang Liu's gesture, Wang Chao let him leave but stayed alone in the living room, smoking a cigarette and unwilling to go back.
Back in his bedroom, lying on the bed and staring at the bright Flower Panel above him, Jiang Liu couldn't shake off the image of himself that had appeared at the end. He found it hard to fall asleep.
