Horror Chapter
As Jiang Liu reached the second floor, the maze-like corridor appeared before him once again. At that moment, he recalled the body hanging on the Flower Panel that they had seen earlier. He remembered Wang Ke had said it was a female corpse.
With this memory, Jiang Liu's expression darkened as he looked at Wang Ke. "Did you know Sun Ting would die on the second floor, which is why you were willing to help me?"
Wang Ke stroked the white wall and sighed. "I gave you a choice, but as I said before, your choices have always been the same."
After a moment of silence, Jiang Liu turned to glance at Sun Ting, who remained unresponsive, and asked, "What will happen next?"
"What if I were to kill Sun Ting myself and hang her on the Flower Panel? What would you do?" Wang Ke looked at Jiang Liu with a half-smile, seemingly curious about his reaction.
Seeing the strange smile in Wang Ke's eyes, Jiang Liu fell silent. Gradually, the amusement faded from Wang Ke's gaze, leaving him somewhat bored.
"According to previous methods, I would just leave Sun Ting here and walk straight ahead. But what will happen now, I don't know."
"You don't know what will happen to Sun Ting on this level?" Jiang Liu furrowed his brow.
"I'm not the main character; how could I have such luck? In the past, as long as one person was left behind, the others could pass through."
After hearing Wang Ke's words, Jiang Liu didn't dwell on who Wang Ke had left behind in previous timelines—perhaps Lin Dahai or Xu Meng, or maybe even himself.
Taking a deep breath, Jiang Liu looked at Wang Ke. "I won't leave her behind. From now on, it's up to you to decide whether to join us."
"Hey, hey, that's unfair! If I don't walk with you guys, then I'll be the one left alone. No matter how you look at it, I have to stick with you," Wang Ke replied helplessly.
Ignoring Wang Ke's joking remarks, Jiang Liu glanced at Sun Ting again and noticed that she had closed her eyes at some point. Her steady breathing indicated that she had fallen into a deep sleep.
He knew it was foolish to risk his life for someone unrelated to him, but in Xu Hai and Sun Ting, he saw reflections of Li Lin and Xu Qian. This was his only way to repay Li Lin.
With a self-deprecating smile, he stopped worrying about what might happen next and prepared himself for whatever lay ahead.
Recalling his memories of the second floor, Jiang Liu carried Sun Ting on his back as he walked ahead. Wang Ke followed closely behind them. At that moment, Jiang Liu believed that Wang Ke had not experienced this situation before; a sense of pride swelled within him.
Neither of them had any tools to measure time, so they had no idea how long they had been walking in this oppressive corridor. Along the way, Jiang Liu had to rest several times due to exhaustion, but each time he didn’t rest for long.
He remembered that Wang Ke's sense of time was their current advantage, but because of his persistence, he wasn’t sure if he was wasting this precious edge.
As they turned a corner, a gray footprint appeared on the white wall in Jiang Liu's line of sight. The gray mark stood out starkly against the clean, pale surface.
Wang Ke also noticed the gray footprint on the wall. He paused for a moment, then exclaimed with excitement, “Damn it! Damn it! We’ve returned to the previous timeline!”
Jiang Liu recalled who had left that footprint; it was made by Lin Dahai when he kicked the wall out of frustration while they were on the second floor. However, he couldn’t understand why Wang Ke was so thrilled to see it.
Seeing Jiang Liu’s puzzled expression, Wang Ke explained joyfully, “Did you forget that Lin Dahai kicked the wall out of frustration? If it weren’t for this footprint, I wouldn’t have realized we’ve returned to the previous timeline on this floor.”
“I know this is Lin Dahai’s mark, but why are you so happy about it?”
“How can I not be happy? As long as we’re back in the previous timeline, we can safely move on to the next floor!” At this point, Wang Ke looked at Jiang Liu with confusion. “I don’t know if it’s just our luck or some other reason that we managed to return to the previous timeline.”
After hearing Wang Ke’s explanation, Jiang Liu felt relieved and was somewhat pleased to know they could pass through this level safely. “In that case, let’s hurry and leave this place.”
Seeing that they had returned to the previous timeline, Wang Ke no longer cautiously observed his surroundings and walked alongside Jiang Liu. Looking at Wang Ke, Jiang Liu asked a question that had been on his mind: “I’m really curious about how the Mortuary will appear. We didn’t see any passageways to other floors when we were on the first floor.”
Wang Ke explained, “The Mortuary usually doesn’t appear at the beginning of an event; it only shows up after we reach the top floor. That’s why I have to follow the development of events no matter how many times I’ve experienced them.”
“What’s inside the Mortuary?”
Wang Ke shook his head. “I don’t know; I’ve never been inside.”
“You’ve never been inside? How do you know there’s a Mortuary?” Jiang Liu asked in confusion.
“It’s just a guess, and you’re the one who told me about it.”
“What? I told you?” Jiang Liu quickly realized he had misunderstood and hurriedly continued asking, “Wait, which version of me told you?”
Wang Ke furrowed his brows, recalling for a moment. "I don't know which timeline it is, but I guess it was during my third experience with the event. You told me that the event wasn't over, and I had to continue going through it."
"What about me?" Jiang Liu asked curiously.
Wang Ke smiled wryly. "You probably died."
"What do you mean, 'probably died'?"
"Because you went into the Mortuary alone."
"Why?"
Wang Ke looked at Jiang Liu with some agitation. "You're asking me? That's a question you should be asking yourself. Why did you choose to enter the Mortuary when you could have survived? Why did you lose your sanity and rush into the Mortuary when you could have waited until the last moment?"
Jiang Liu fell silent; he didn't know how to respond.
At that moment, a passageway leading to the first floor appeared before them.
