Horror Chapter
The time rewinds to not long ago.
When Jiang Liu heard Wang Ke mention that he had received a call from his own phone, his expression clearly froze, startled by the statement. He thought that Wang Ke had discovered the secret he was trying to hide.
However, looking at Wang Ke's calm demeanor, Jiang Liu felt that Wang Ke did not seem to be fishing for information; instead, there was a hint of honesty hidden within.
"What do you mean by that?"
"On the surface, it means that when I woke up, I received a call, and the number was my own mobile number."
"So what?" Jiang Liu swallowed hard.
Wang Ke shook his head. "Nothing. The person on the other end remained silent; no sound came through."
Jiang Liu pondered for a moment before asking, "Then why are you telling me this?"
Wang Ke looked at Jiang Liu and revealed a set of white teeth. "You should know."
Jiang Liu's heart skipped a beat, but he feigned confusion on the outside. "I don't understand what you mean."
Wang Ke glanced around. "It's just the two of us here now. I hope we can trust each other a little. Earlier, when we found you, you were hiding something from us. If I'm not mistaken, you also received a call from your own phone."
Jiang Liu lowered his head in silence. Wang Ke gazed at the somewhat empty surroundings. "At first, I didn't press you because I was with Lin Dahai and Xu Meng, but now it's just the two of us."
Jiang Liu raised his head and looked into Wang Ke's serious eyes. After hesitating for a moment, he spoke up. "Indeed, you're right. When I woke up, I also received a call from my own phone. The situation was the same as yours; there was no sound coming from the other end."
Seeing Jiang Liu's honesty, Wang Ke appeared pleased. "It seems we have a lot in common."
Regarding Wang Ke's comment, which could be interpreted as praise, Jiang Liu chuckled awkwardly. "Why don't you trust Lin Dahai and Xu Meng?"
Wang Ke stared in the direction where Lin Dahai and Xu Meng had disappeared and replied, "No matter how well someone can disguise themselves, their body will betray them with certain details. From the moment I met Lin Dahai, I sensed he was hiding something from me; Xu Meng is the same."
"I had things I was hiding from you at the beginning too. Why did you choose to trust me?" Jiang Liu asked, somewhat confused.
"Just a feeling. My intuition told me I should trust you."
Hearing Wang Ke's explanation, Jiang Liu nearly choked on his own saliva. A person who didn't even trust their own instincts had chosen to rely on them to trust a stranger. Clearly, this wasn't something a normal person would do.
"By the way, I've always wanted to ask you—do you feel an inexplicable sense of familiarity with everything we've experienced? From the second floor onward, I've felt that everything happening is strangely familiar, but I'm sure I've never gone through anything like this before," Wang Ke suddenly asked.
Upon hearing this, Jiang Liu looked at Wang Ke in surprise. "You feel that way too?"
"Just as I thought. We have a lot in common."
"I don't think there's anything to be proud of in having commonalities with you," Jiang Liu retorted sarcastically, glancing towards the direction where Lin Dahai and Xu Meng had disappeared. "Is there any problem with separating them?"
"No, whatever they want to do, they won't escape my grasp." At that moment, Wang Ke exuded an air of confidence.
"I'm not as confident as you are. The people who have made it this far rely on either luck or their own intelligence. The fact that Lin Dahai and Xu Meng were hiding things from you indicates they don't fully trust you either. It's not uncommon for things to go wrong."
Jiang Liu felt a deep discomfort at Wang Ke's confidence and countered with a few remarks.
Wang Ke shrugged, clearly not taking Jiang Liu's words to heart as he looked in one direction. "Let's go over there and search. After all, it was my suggestion to look around, and staying here is starting to feel pointless."
As soon as Wang Ke finished speaking, they heard a heavy thud from behind them. Following the sound, they turned to see a monster with an enormous head and an incredibly slender body, wielding a massive bone knife and grinning menacingly at them.
The creature seemed to be chewing on something, its lips moving up and down incessantly. To the side lay a corpse with only half a body remaining, blood gushing from its wounds in vivid splashes.
Wang Ke quickly recognized that the half-corpse belonged to Xu Meng. Connecting it with the monster that was chewing something in its mouth, he soon realized what had happened. Grabbing Jiang Liu, he sprinted toward the staircase leading to the third floor while shouting loudly around them, "Run!"
The two of them raced toward the third floor without daring to look back, terrified that the monster would catch up with them. They crossed the vast living room in mere seconds before finally stopping at the staircase, leaning against the wall and gasping for breath.
"Did I just watch Lin Dahai and Xu Meng die like that?" Jiang Liu seemed unable to believe that two people he had just been talking to moments ago had died without a sound.
Wang Ke stared down the hallway behind them. "From where the monster was standing and its direction, it looks like the ones who died were indeed Lin Dahai and Xu Meng. This is bad."
"What trouble is it? Did that monster come after us?" Jiang Liu asked nervously, staring at the stairway.
"It's not a monster. The monster shouldn't have followed us. It's the deaths of Lin Dahai and Xu Meng that have disrupted my plans," Wang Ke replied, sitting on the floor with his back against the white wall. "Now that Lin Dahai and Xu Meng are dead, I have no idea what they were hiding from me, and that's not good for what comes next."
Jiang Liu suddenly seemed to realize something. He looked at Wang Ke seriously and asked, "You mentioned before that we could abandon others if necessary. Did you already know this would happen?"
Jiang Liu expected Wang Ke to offer some explanation in response to his question, but instead, Wang Ke looked at Jiang Liu's serious expression and suddenly burst into laughter. "I thought you hadn't noticed until now. You're doing quite well; I'm very pleased."
"How should I address you? Wang Ke One? Or Wang Ke Two?" Jiang Liu asked sternly.
"Indeed, your intelligence is not to be underestimated," Wang Ke said with a light laugh, clapping his hands as he looked at Jiang Liu. "How did you figure it out?"
"I didn't figure anything out. What I said earlier was just a guess," Jiang Liu shook his head. "But now I'm certain."
Wang Ke was clearly taken aback for a moment before bursting into laughter again, struggling to catch his breath. "When did you come up with this idea?"
"From the very beginning, your behavior struck me as odd. You seemed too familiar with everything, as if you knew where the dangers lay. Especially when we reached the fifth floor; your actions completely exposed you."
After finishing his words, Jiang Liu fixed his gaze on Wang Ke's eyes. In the silent corridor, the atmosphere between them suddenly fell into a heavy silence.
