Horror Chapter
After dissecting several dolls, Wang Ke finally stopped. His clothes were stained with blood as he stood in the center of the blood pool, looking at everyone with a slightly relaxed tone. "It seems that all the dolls here are the same; they all have the necessary organs inside, but the only thing missing is the skeleton."
"I think we shouldn't be discussing this right now," Xu Meng said, glancing at Wang Ke's terrifying appearance, feeling a bit shaken.
Wang Ke looked at the dismembered dolls and then at Xu Meng. After a moment of thought, he replied, "You're right; our main focus now should be finding the next exit."
"Then why did you go crazy and start dissecting the dolls?"
Ma Chao looked at Wang Ke with a serious expression. His view of Wang Ke mirrored Jiang Liu's; he considered him a madman because one could never predict what he would do next or what his intentions were.
Being on the same team as someone like him made Ma Chao feel that his life was constantly in danger. His dissatisfaction with Wang Ke was nearing a breaking point.
Wang Ke gazed at the dismembered dolls, stroking his chin thoughtfully. "Because I believe these dolls are a hint given to us by supernatural events."
"So you just acted on your own accord?"
"Actually, it wasn't entirely on my own." Wang Ke suddenly pointed at Jiang Liu. "After all, he knows what I plan to do next."
Jiang Liu, who had been observing the corpses, was startled when Wang Ke mentioned him. Looking at Wang Ke's calm expression, he thought to himself: Who knows what you plan to do next?
However, despite his thoughts, Jiang Liu kept silent because he knew that in Ma Chao's and the other two's eyes, he was already part of Wang Ke's team. Whatever he did would make them wary of him. Moreover, compared to Ma Chao's intelligence, Jiang Liu preferred to trust Wang Ke.
There was just one thing he couldn't understand: why did Wang Ke always focus his attention on him and seem intent on exposing Jiang Liu to everyone's gaze?
Ma Chao was infuriated by Wang Ke's words and pointed at Jiang Liu. "Are you saying this guy is also a lunatic like you?"
After saying this, Ma Chao regretted it a bit. Although he firmly believed that Wang Ke was insane, there was no need to voice it out loud.
If it weren't for being provoked by Wang Ke's casual demeanor, he wouldn't have revealed his thoughts. But since it was out there now, Ma Chao decided not to explain further and simply stared intently at Wang Ke to see what he would do next.
Wang Ke didn't seem to care about Ma Chao's accusation of madness; he squinted at Jiang Liu and said, "You never know."
"You really know how to joke," Jiang Liu chuckled awkwardly.
"Now is not the time for this discussion; we should talk about what to do next," Xu Meng broke the tense silence among the three.
Lin Dahai looked at Wang Ke, who was covered in blood, and his expression became somewhat uneasy. "I think we should just go back. Even if this puppet really is a person transformed, it doesn't have much to do with our mission."
"Go back?" Wang Ke turned to Lin Dahai. "Do you think we can just return and everything will be fine? Tell me why you've wanted to leave since you got here."
Lin Dahai's face showed signs of struggle for a long time before he finally said, "I don't know what's going on, but when I see the faces of these puppets, the more I look at them, the more fear I feel inside."
Hearing this explanation, Wang Ke looked down at the puppet he had dissected. At first, his expression was calm, but soon it turned grim. He forced himself to look away, his face gradually returning to a neutral state.
Seeing the puzzled looks from the others, Wang Ke thought for a moment and uttered five words: "Uncanny Valley Effect."
"Uncanny Valley Effect?" Ma Chao asked in confusion.
"It's a phenomenon where objects that are not human suddenly exhibit human characteristics, causing a sense of unease in those who see them," Xu Meng explained.
"Really? I don't feel anything," Ma Chao muttered skeptically as he squatted down to stare at the face of a nearby puppet, wanting to test if Xu Meng was right.
Jiang Liu also looked at the puppet's face beside him. "I know about this effect, but although these puppets are roughly human-sized, their faces don't seem to have any distinctive features."
Before he could finish speaking, a wave of dread surged within him. The more he looked at the puppet before him, the more horrifying it seemed, accompanied by an unsettling sense of familiarity.
Drawn in by this feeling of familiarity, Jiang Liu instinctively focused on trying to see the puppet clearly. Gradually, the originally featureless white puppet began to take on a blurry face in his eyes, and his fear intensified.
He tried to look away, but what terrified him was that his body refused to obey his commands; he couldn't turn his head. Even when he wanted to call out for help from the others, no sound came out. His eyes were glued to the increasingly clear face of the puppet.
Just as the puppet's face became clearer and his fear morphed into despair, Jiang Liu suddenly felt a sharp kick on his left side that sent him flying sideways, crashing onto other puppets.
Though he didn't know who had kicked him, Jiang Liu was immensely grateful. If it weren't for that kick pulling his gaze away from the puppet's face, he didn't know what he would have seen. But deep down, that overwhelming fear told him that familiar face was definitely not something he wanted to see.
Once his gaze shifted away from the puppet's face, Jiang Liu was pleasantly surprised to find that he regained control over his body. Before he could thank whoever had kicked him away, he heard Wang Ke's voice.
"Everyone, don't look at the doll's face!"
Immediately, Jiang Liu saw Wang Ke rush towards the others who were standing still, kicking one of them away. The person who was kicked flew through the air and clumsily got back up from the ground.
Xu Meng, having developed a fear of the dolls after witnessing Wang Ke dissect one earlier, felt relieved to have escaped this time while everyone else was fixated on the dolls.
Once all the people who had been kicked away stood up, Jiang Liu counted and realized there were only six left—one person was missing.
Why is there one less?
Jiang Liu looked around suspiciously, trying to see who was missing, only to find Ma Chao squatting motionless in front of a doll not far away.
"Ma Chao?" Jiang Liu called out tentatively, but Ma Chao's back remained unmoving.
"Don't call out; that guy is already dead."
Wang Ke's voice came from behind, stopping Jiang Liu from moving forward. However, stopping didn’t mean the others would heed Wang Ke’s warning.
Sun Ting and Xu Hai rushed directly to Ma Chao's side. Jiang Liu then saw Xu Hai gasp sharply and stagger back a few steps, while Sun Ting let out a loud scream. It seemed they had witnessed something unbelievable.
