As they made their way back, Lin Mei Mei walked at the front of the group like a proud princess, oblivious to the chilling darkness surrounding them, as if she had traversed this path many times before.
Jiang Liu, being there for the first time, couldn't help but glance into the shadows on either side of the road. He noticed that the darkness seemed to swallow his gaze; no matter how hard he looked, he could not discern what lay hidden in the surrounding gloom.
It felt as though the only existence in the world was the path they were walking.
After a short while, Jiang Liu spotted a luxurious villa emerging before them, its lights shining brightly in the oppressive darkness, drawing their attention.
Upon reaching the villa's entrance, Senmu turned to Jiang Liu and said, "Welcome to our home. From now on, we are family."
Jiang Liu looked at the three of them and sincerely bowed, saying, "I look forward to your guidance in the future."
As soon as he stepped inside the villa, a delicious aroma wafted toward him, making his stomach grumble embarrassingly; he realized just how hungry he was.
Upon catching a whiff of the enticing scent, Wang Chao's gloomy expression finally brightened a bit. He looked at Jiang Liu and forced a smile. "It's been a long time since I've had food cooked by Dream Sister. You're in for a treat."
Senmu pointed toward what appeared to be the kitchen and said to Jiang Liu, "The one cooking in there is our Dream Sister. She takes care of all our daily needs like an elder sister."
No sooner had he finished speaking than Dream Sister's voice came from the kitchen: "Senmu, is Wang Chao back?"
Then Jiang Liu saw a beautiful woman emerge from the kitchen, wearing a pink apron over a black sweater and with long hair flowing gracefully. She exuded an air of intellectual charm.
Seeing Wang Chao return made Dream Sister particularly happy. When she noticed Jiang Liu standing nearby, she asked, "Is this the one who saved Wang Chao's life, Jiang Liu?"
Jiang Liu quickly responded, "Hello, Dream Sister. I am Jiang Liu. I hope to receive your guidance in the future."
"There's no need to be so formal. Now that you're here, we're all family. Dinner is ready; let's talk more during the meal."
The dining table was a large round wooden one filled with an array of dishes that were both fragrant and visually appealing. Six pairs of chopsticks were laid out on the table.
The group casually found their seats as Dream Sister placed a generous bowl of rice in front of each person, even setting one at the empty spot where no one sat.
Everyone knew in their hearts why Dream Sister was acting this way, even the newcomer Jiang Liu could see that this was a tribute to the deceased Brother Yu.
Sitting at the dining table, Dream Sister raised her glass filled with red wine and addressed everyone, "First, let us welcome our new member Jiang Liu. From now on, we have one more family member."
The others seemed to choose to briefly forget the fact that Brother Yu was no longer with them; each face was filled with joy at the arrival of the new member. However, as the new member, Jiang Liu felt a suppressed sadness beneath this joy.
The meal was consumed quickly, or perhaps no one had the appetite to eat. Even Jiang Liu, who was quite hungry, only managed a few bites before he could eat no more.
As soon as the meal ended, Wang Chao excused himself, claiming he felt unwell, and returned to his room, leaving the other four at the dining table.
Watching Wang Chao's figure disappear into the living room, Dream Sister turned to Jiang Liu and asked, "I wonder if Wang Chao introduced us to you?"
Jiang Liu felt a bit awkward and replied, "Not really; he didn't mention anything."
Dream Sister shook her head helplessly and continued, "In that case, let me introduce you to everyone here. I won’t introduce Wang Chao since you should know him. This is Senmu, who joined us a year ago. And this is our team's cutie, full name Lin Mei Mei; she joined around the same time as Senmu."
Jiang Liu looked at Lin Mei Mei in surprise. He hadn't expected that this girl, who was only slightly taller than a loli, actually had the name Lin Mei Mei. He had thought Wang Chao was joking earlier but realized it was true.
Lin Mei Mei seemed to notice Jiang Liu's astonished gaze and huffed before getting up and walking back to her room.
Dream Sister explained for Lin Mei Mei, who had already returned to her room: "Don't mind her, Jiang Liu; they are both feeling a bit down."
"It's fine; I understand," Jiang Liu replied, indicating that he wasn't bothered by their attitudes. He glanced at Dream Sister and couldn't help but ask, "Dream Sister, isn't there someone else you haven't introduced?"
Dream Sister's expression clearly froze for a moment but quickly returned to a smile. "There’s one more person; his name is Yu Chang. Since he joined earlier and has helped everyone out a lot, Wang Chao and the others like to call him Brother Yu."
At this point, Dream Sister paused, clearly not wanting to continue on this topic.
Jiang Liu had no choice but to change the subject and asked, "I heard Wang Chao mention before that having eight members in a team is optimal. But now I see our team has..."
"A bit fewer members than that," Dream Sister replied. "This can't be helped; every team has a limited number of members. We can't just bring in newcomers at will, so we have strict control over our numbers."
Jiang Liu sensed Dream Sister's evasiveness and decided not to press further. He found an excuse and headed back to his room to rest.
"The rooms are open for you to stay in, except for the one with a name on the door," Dream Sister said to Jiang Liu.
As Jiang Liu's figure disappeared from the living room, Senmu, who had been silent until now, turned to Dream Sister and spoke up.
"Dream Sister, what do you think of this newcomer?"
"In what way?" Dream Sister replied, glancing at the spot that originally belonged to Yu Chang.
"Character, intelligence, personality—everything!"
"From his willingness to save two unrelated people, it's clear he's not a villain. As for intelligence, if what Wang Chao said is true, then this newcomer shouldn't be underestimated. After some time of honing his skills, he should become a backbone of our team. As for his personality, we'll have to observe that gradually."
Senmu wanted to ask more, but Dream Sister waved her hand to interrupt. "I'm feeling a bit tired now. You should head back to your room and rest. We can talk more later."
After watching Dream Sister for a long moment, Senmu sighed and reluctantly returned to his room.
Once everyone had left, Dream Sister looked at the untouched food on the table and softly said, "Safe travels, Yu Chang."
