"You clueless rookie, you actually survived two Alternate Dimension Incidents all by yourself!"
After hearing Jiang Liu's earlier introduction, Wang Chao couldn't calm down for a long time. He had nearly finished a half pack of cigarettes, and as he took the last one from the pack, he looked at Jiang Liu with a gaze that suggested he was staring at a freak.
"I am now absolutely certain that you are a freak, and a very lucky one at that. Next time there's a supernatural event, I definitely can't be with you, or else it's highly likely that I'll be the one who dies, not you."
Jiang Liu ignored the sarcasm in Wang Chao's words and instead asked about something that concerned him more:
"When I was at the hotel, someone shared some information about the supernatural events with me, but I didn't pay much attention at the time. Can you explain it to me properly now?"
Wang Chao scratched his head, seemingly troubled about how to clarify things for Jiang Liu. After a moment of hesitation, he finally said, "I don't really know how to explain it to you. The biggest difference between the two incidents is uncertainty.
For example, take this recent supernatural event. Initially, our deductions about real-world events were correct; logically, it should have ended when Xu Ya died. However, because the ghosts from the Alternate Dimension Incident came here, we had to continue our operations. The Otherworld is the source of all these changes."
Jiang Liu thought for a moment and found Wang Chao's statement reasonable. He then changed the subject and continued asking, "So we're leaving soon. What about Lin Feng and Sun Miao? Why haven't I seen them?"
"Oh, them? Sun Miao isn't suitable for our team, so I didn't choose him. As for Lin Feng, I don't have high hopes for him either. From the looks of it, he wants to go home for a bit," Wang Chao explained.
"Choosing? Isn't everyone allowed to join the team?"
"Of course not," Wang Chao pointed at Jiang Liu. "Actually, my main mission in participating in this supernatural event is to see if you're suitable for our team. Lin Feng and Sun Miao were just incidental."
"What do you mean?" Jiang Liu frowned and asked.
"This involves the team's guidelines. According to what Dream Sister explained to me, the number of people a team can accommodate is fixed at eight. This is the most suitable and also the limit. Once this limit is exceeded, the team will face penalties from supernatural events."
"Just like how we can't disclose information about supernatural incidents?"
"Pretty much. Jiang Liu, you need to remember that not everyone can receive the team's protection. Each person entering the team must have the approval of at least one team member to become part of it."
"So I'm one of the members you've chosen this time?" Jiang Liu asked, pointing to himself.
"Not just me; Dream Sister also hopes you will become a member of our team after learning about this incident."
Jiang Liu suddenly realized he had been hearing the term Dream Sister from Wang Chao's mouth and curiously asked, "Who is this Dream Sister? Is she the captain of the team?"
"Dream Sister is simply Dream Sister. As for what you call a captain, that's in other teams. We don't have a captain here; once you join this team, we are all family."
Hearing about other teams, Jiang Liu recalled the two elderly people who took Zhang Lin away after the Ghost Tower Incident. Perhaps those two had abandoned him in favor of Zhang Lin back then.
"Oh, there's one thing you must keep in mind: if you encounter members from other teams during the next supernatural event, remember not to trust anyone!" Wang Chao said with a serious expression.
"Why? The elderly people I met before treated me quite well; they weren't as sinister as you make them out to be," Jiang Liu replied, somewhat confused.
"Knowing someone’s face doesn’t mean you know their heart. They were nice to you because you hadn’t joined another team. Any team would want to recruit an outstanding newcomer like you. Your performance this time has completely surpassed expectations, and Dream Sister along with the rest of the team hopes you will join us."
"I also hope to join your team."
Jiang Liu had a great fondness for Wang Chao. During this supernatural incident, Wang Chao's assistance had been invaluable; if it weren't for his reminders, Jiang Liu might have taken a long time to uncover the clues. As a result, he also developed a slight affection for the team that Wang Chao belonged to.
"You said before that your main mission in this supernatural event was for me. What's that all about?" Jiang Liu asked, recalling Wang Chao's earlier words.
"Oh, that matter? It's fine to tell you; anyway, you'll probably experience it yourself soon enough," Wang Chao said, pulling out a pack of cigarettes from somewhere and explaining while smoking. "Not just anyone can randomly join a team; the members who join are not decided by the team itself."
"Then who decides?"
"It's simple—the supernatural events," Wang Chao exhaled smoke and continued. "Whenever a potential newcomer appears who could join the team, the supernatural event will issue a task to that team. One member of the team will carry out the task, and the purpose is to see if this newcomer can be accepted into the team."
"So I’m the newcomer deemed to have potential by the supernatural event this time?" Jiang Liu said self-deprecatingly.
"You’re an exception. I've never encountered someone like you who has survived several supernatural incidents in a row without being accepted into a team. Why haven't you joined another team?"
Jiang Liu thought back on his past experiences with supernatural events. Excluding the bus incident, both Ugly Game and Otherworldly Hotel were Alternate Dimension Incidents, and afterward, he hadn’t seen anyone else. As for the Haunted Building incident, due to memory gaps, Jiang Liu didn’t understand why those two newcomers chose only Zhang Lin and abandoned him.
Seeing that Jiang Liu didn’t respond, Wang Chao assumed he had some unspoken difficulties and decided not to press further, shifting the conversation to other topics.
The sky quickly darkened.
